time for morning commutes. On some days I let my kids watch educational DVD's on our 20 min commute to school. Last year I purchased 'Liberty Kids'. I highly recommend this made for kids series on American History! My first grader knows all about the revolutionary war, key players, historical names, the civil war, heroes and how these stories tie and flow together along with inventors, American progress, industry etc etc. So now that you have my recommendation and the kind of thing I'd love to collect more of, what has been a great educational DVD for your pre school and grade school age children. Thx.
Thats great you don't allow your kids dvd's for a 20 min ride. I used to be that way too. Then I had a third kid and added a third row. Sadly with three kids and a third row, I cannot have conversations with my oldest in the back without considerably raising my voice, and I can generally hear nothing she says from the third row. So while I agree in theory, our car rides are what they are. I have allowed a once per week dvd on school drives. Chill out and be helpful, not idealistic.
Thankfully by christmas she will be legally old enough to ride in the front seat and I look forward to the return of our car conversations. I have missed her in the third row. Honestly, I"ve lamented many times the difficulty of having only forced vs. natural conversations with the need for repeating and constantly asking her to speak up (which she can't seem to do).

My kids (going into 1st and 3rd) love Wild Kratts. At our latest trip to the zoo they knew more about some of the animals than I do!
This summer they discovered Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
Magic School Bus is still a favorite.
Odd Squad has great science and math. And it is truly odd, but my kids love it.
Personally my rule in the car is no electronics unless we are on a road trip. To me 20 minutes is nothing - and a great opportunity for conversation. However, as far as educational dvds (don't know your kids' ages but) my son totally loves watching the Cosmos series - I'm hoping to get it for him on DVD eventually.
ETA, I guess that swh was aimed at me. Sorry if you thought I was being "idealistic" and not helpful. I advised what my rule is, and that from my perspective 20 minutes is not long enough to warrant electronics. I also offered my favorite educational series, which was exactly what you asked. Please remember that it's really all right for people to disagree. Promise. (and yes if you FELT I was being disrespectful, I didn't mean to be, so I do apologize. But I certainly didn't belittle your opinions or call names or in any other way disrespect you, so, I'm leaning towards you might just be a little over-sensitive about this.)
Schoolhouse Rock, Magic School Bus, Wishbone, Bill Nye, Reading Rainbow.
No DVDs etc in car. 20 minutes is not a long time. I recommend having a conversation instead.
Without getting in the weeds over each families choice of electronics or not in the vehicle...
We have Liberty Kids also & we've loved it! We've loaned it out to a few friends & they've all raved about it also. What about Signing Time? We've used that to teach our kiddos some ASL & they like enjoy it also. We also like the Wild Kratts.
I can't really think of anything else. Hope you find something that works for you guys!
May grace & peace be yours in abundance.
Walking With Dinosaurs is one we love to watch.
My older kids loved Magic School Bus and it is the perfect length for a 20 minute commute. They didn't get into School House Rock, probably because things have changed so much. They also loved There Goes A....videos. I think they do have them on dvd but you might have to look online for them. The titles were There Goes a Train, Airplane, Truck etc. They tell all about the items and how they work.
I guess I'm old school, or maybe just old ... but I always loved (when I was a kid myself and when my kids were young elementary aged they enjoyed them, too) School House Rock.
I had a handheld electronic game version at one point. But just the DVDs are great!
