My 6 and 4 yr old kids have started to watch shows like SpongeBob and Fairly Odd Parents. I don't like the shows -- characters calling each other idiots and morons, etc... I don't mind my kids watching a bit of TV once in a while, but would prefer something a little more positive! A year or two ago, they watched Wild Kratts, Dinosaur Train, and Curious George.
What are your kids favorite TV shows that you feel pretty good about?
Phineas & Ferb, Jessie, Austin & Ally, Shake It Up, dog with a blog, Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse are all shows my 6 year old son enjoy.
My son is 4. We mostly just buy DVD's. Wallace and Gromit, DVD's about toys (real and model,) Mr. Rogers, Kid friendly animal documentaries, and oddly enough...watching Bob Ross paint. (That makes ME especially happy!)

My girls are 5 and almost 7 and they still watch Backyardigans, My Little Pony, Doc McStuffins, Care Bears, etc.
Some of their favourite "big kid" shows are Phineas and Ferb, Johnny Test, and Adventure Time. Now, I'm not a fan of Adventure Time, but it's not *that* bad.
My kids are 9 & 6 and they still watch Wild Kratts. They pretty much only watch PBS shows since we don't have cable. They like Arthur, Martha Speaks & Cyberchase. They watch Justin Time on Netflix and my daughter really like Pinky Dinky Doo on Netflix, also Phineas & Ferb on Netflix.
We just do PBS shows-Curious George, Sesame Street, and Mr. Rogers (off Amazon Prime). I'm pretty strict with the screen time though, I limit it to no more than 30 mins a day, but most days we don't even do that much. I'm sure as he gets older he'll want to watch other shows, but I don't think Spongebob is a great choice.
My daughter watched Animaniacs at that age. In fact, she and I both loved it. And yes, she got the jokes that were aimed at us vintage folk.

My kids are 7,5, and 3.we watch Full House,Dog with a blog,Good luck Charlie etc.My 7 yr old loves full house,5 yr old loves anything disney and 3 yr old loves Curious George.im fine with it
At that age my boys were really into Scooby Doo and America's Funniest Videos.
We're still on Nick Jr. Little Bill, The Backyardigans are our favorites.

If you dont like the shows, then your kids shouldnt watch them. We do Cat and The Hat Knows A Lot about That, Curious George, Scooby Doo and Doc McStuffins.
My son is 5 1/2 and loves Word Girl (and I love that he doesn't care that the main character is a girl, and I love that the girl is smart and strong and a super hero that solves crime with words--yay! And how can you not love that her sidekick is a monkey named Captain Huggiepants?), the Muppet Show DVDs totally crack him up, the Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about That (really smart show, teaches a lot but is silly--I love that Martin Short is "the Cat"). We also get a lot of the old school Scooby Doo and super hero cartoon DVDs from the library (the ones from the 80s). They are wayyyy more kiddo-friendly than the new ones that are on cable, IMO.

I've seen these Disney shows and I agree with his opinion. My daughter watches Shake it Up sometimes, etc... and I can't stand it. I have a friend (single mom has 2 daughters 9 and 8) who just bans all Disney shows because they encourage bad behavior. Middle schoolers dating. Really? We need to put that into your 6 and 9 yr olds heads? Or middle schoolers obsessed with being the center of attention on a dance show?
I ordered LIBERTY KIDS DVD on Ebay after reading about it on homeschooling boards. Check out the reviews on Amazon. It was a PBS series that is a cartoon, so kids learn about American history and don't realize they are learning. I SO WISH I started these cartoons when my kids were younger - the age your children are now. My kids are 9 and 13 now. I'm still going to make them watch them.
Most Nick/Disney shows are junk. I can stand Phineas & Ferb, but not the rest.
I never had my kids watch Veggie Tales, but now I'm trying to find Bible stories on video.

Teddy Roosevelt is right. I'm reading the Bible and everyone should be familiar with this book. It's not taught in schools, so it's up to you to read it for yourself. I'm reading the Book of Proverbs to my 13 yr old son. Lots of wisdom there about staying of trouble.
Homeschooling boards are great for this type of question. There are amazing educational resources out there.
PUBLIC LIBRARY - our big public library has a wall of DVDs to rent. Some are different, historical/educational, biographical cartoons. Go to your local library and see what they have. Turn off the TV and just use DVDs.
What TV I can watch with my kids that I feel good about?
Food Network - some cooking shows.
I like home renovation shows.
13 yr old likes Fishing channel and nature shows
He just discovered Extreme Home Makeover.
Wife swap - yup we watch that. Fascinating and educational.
I am in the same boat - DD is turning 6 next month and has gotten more into the same shows and less into the preschooler shows. I really like Phineas and Ferb - it's really fun and the characters don't insult each other or act inappropriate in any way. SpongeBob and Fairly Odd Parents don't bother me that much - I make sure DD understands that it's only TV and only a cartoon and we don't talk that way to people in real life. I won't let her watch Sanjay and Craig or any of the tween/teen shows like iCarly, Victorious, Austin and Ally, etc.
DD also likes game-show type shows - I can't remember the names of all of them but they have them for families and kids on the Hub (Family Game Night) and Nick. She thinks Wipeout is hilarious and she's also gotten into watching reruns of Full House on Nick - it's corny to me but wholesome enough. She likes Gumball on Cartoon Network but I don't like Cartoon Network overall so I don't let her have it on very often. She also likes Scooby Doo, Kung Fu Panda and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You might not want your boys watching TMNT if you are worried about violence and them imitating what they see on TV and doing karate moves on each other - but that just depends on how much you think they can understand about not emulating what they see on TV. My friend's twin boys (6 going on 7) also like Justice League (Superman, etc.) and anything Star Wars.
