My baby is 11 months old and every time we eat, she wants something off our plate, even if she is totally full. If we let her taste a little of what we have, even if she has had her fill of her own food, are setting her up for unhealthy eating habits later, or is this a phase that will pass?

What can I do next?

My 18 month old is the same way. Her little belly gets so big after she eats that it sticks out from under her little t-shirts like a baby budda! I worry about the same thing you do that she's going to get fat or have weight issues, but my doc says to let her eat so I'm with you.

It sounds like it is good for her. She wants to try new things and this will mean she is not a picky eater in the future. Worry when all she will eat is macaroni ;)

I agree- it's great that she is wanting to eat new things or just eat period. A lot of mom's have trouble getting thier kids to eat at all. I also have a good eater and she ussually likes what is on our plate more that what is on her own even if it's the same thing :) We just ussually give it to her but we put it on her plate rather than letting her take it directly off of ours or just feeding her from our plate. This way she knows that she should eat what is on HER plate. They way I see it- always encourage them eating because at somepoint they all go through a stage where eating is a battle.

I think it's great that your daughter wants to try your foods. Babies stop eating when they're full. They're not like adults who consciously know that we shouldn't have that extra piece of chocolate cake, but eat it anyway. When she's full, she won't eat anymore - even if it's looks delicious! I don't think you're setting her up for anything unhealthy. I think you're teaching her how to expand her eating repertoire! Keep up the great work!

I second what Nicole said. This is likely a phase. My 13mos old still prefers what's on my plate. My daughter did this for a while before we transitioned her to only eating off of her plate. Once we realized it made a difference, we started dishing out our plates and hers in front of her so that she saw there was no real difference.

My daughter is 12 mos and she doesn't even get her own plate anymore. She eats everything off of our plates, usually going back and forth between my husband and myself. I don't make anything special for her, she eats everything she sees us eat (which is great). In about a month or so I am going to try to "break" this habit by making a big deal about getting her own plate her "big girl" plate and will wait until we sit down to eat and take food off of my plate and put it on hers for her to eat. (Don't know yet if this will work, but I think it's awesome that your little one is such a good eater -better than a fussy eater, right?)

I think this is not a problem at all but fantastic!! We used to call our daughter a little begger because she would always beg for what daddy was eating off of his plate. This is wonderful especially at her age. You will very soon be feeding her exactly that, what's on your plates!! anyways. So I think it a great thing, she is curious, she gets to try different flavors, and I truly believe it will make her a better eater in the long run. My daughter is an awesome eater, she eats salmon, sirloin, broccoli, squash, you name it, and she loves it. She is very healthy. Take this as a great thing and enjoy her experimenting!

Good luck to you, I think you have NO PROBLEMS here!!

Take care,

S.

I have a little boy that will barely eat anything...so I say let your girl eat until the cows come home;) Count yourself blessed to have such a great eater. And, I really don't think an 11 month old will gorge herself on food. She'll quit when she's full. Don't stress...try to enjoy every stage b/c they grow out of them way to fast!
