Has anyone else had problems with Dr. Brown's bottles leaking? I'm wondering if I'm not assembling them correctly. Are there any other brands you recommend that are BPA free? Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your responses! It looks like my problem was that I was shaking the bottles to mix up the formula. I've swithced to the "swirling" technique to mix them and haven't had any leaks since. Thanks so much!

Most new bottles are PBA free. But, if I were using bottles at all (my kids never did) I'd get glass. Even plastics without PBA aren't totally safe. The best numbers to use are 1, 2, 4, and 5, but you should never heat milk/formula in them and always wash them by hand, not in the dishwasher.

Never had a problem with Dr. Brown's bottles leaking. Are you sure you have all the components in place?

The only thing I didn't like about them was how hard it was to clean them.

I'd recommend calling the company to see if there was a bad lot of bottles you may have purchased. Many times, manufacturers will refund and exchange if there really is a defect.

You can't shake Dr. Browns like you shake others. In order to mix up formula, I swirl them. If you shake, they leak. Also, as others suggest, transporting them without the disc may cause them to leak. I put mine in the side/end pocket of the diaper bag and sit it upright in the vehicle, at home, etc. I prefer that, to messing with the discs. I used Avent bottles when my older kids were babies and I liked them. This was 8+ years ago, so we weren't dealing with BPA free. I've heard the Avent aren't as good as they were many years ago. I like the Dr. Brown's ok, but if I had to do it again, I would have maybe tried a couple different brands, first. I had no major issues with colic, gas, etc. so maybe it was worth it. I'm also not sure that all had to do with the bottles. My sister was the one who raved about them, but also used the ones before the BPA redesign. I just didn't like all the parts and pieces to wash. But, back to your original question...they can't be shook to mix up formula.

I had some with my second son, threw them out for this exact reason. From everyone I have spoken with, then and since, if you try to transport them assembled - they leak. One gal I know said she just doesn't put the vent/nipple on until her daughter is ready to eat and transports with a storage style cover and that works. . . if you are in the market for something new, I saw these incredible WeilBaby bottles. I have not yet purchased, but they look great. http://www.weilbaby.com/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium...#

Hey Lori,

We've always had leaky Dr. Brown's bottles! At first it was because I was filling them past the line they have marked. I keep it a few mL. below that line.
The second thing I was doing wrong was tightening the cap/nipple on too tight. I was trying to be sure it wouldn't leak but apparently I was making it worse.

Sometimes even when I do both of those things correctly, they still leak. Its annoying, so I fold a paper towel long-ways and wrap it around the cap's bottom, then secure it with a rubber band. Problem solved. Can't afford to buy a bunch of new bottles... Good luck!

Yes, in fact, I had one leak all over my purse yesterday....arghhh...and I know I assembled it properly because I triple checked it. I think the quality of these bottles has gone down, just my opinion. If you're looking for bottles that are suppose to minimize gas, try the Born Free bottles which are BPA free. I have been using the brown tinted plastic ones for the past 4 months and never had one leak yet. The only thing I don't like about the is that they are much wider than the Dr. Brown's so they take up more room in my purse.

I used these with my daughter & now with my 3 month old son. I do have one or two that leaked with both, but all others are just fine unless I don't assemble them right or fill over the line. They do come with those white cover caps if you are traveling with them & that always worked for mine in the past. I still like them the best out of all other bottles & I have tried 4 or 5 brands ;)

Wondering if perhaps the gas vent thingy and the thingy that goes into it (which you must use no matter what they leak like crazy if you don't) may have become warped or distorted from heat sterilization or dishwasher?

Hum, the only time I've ever had a problem with leaking is if I fill above the line that says "Don't fill above this line"!! When we bought the bottles they came with these little disks that you put in the cap to keep the liquid from leaking when transporting. I honestly have never had a problem with these bottles, I love them.

Ours would only leak when transporting them because there are holes in the nipple cover but my husband recently figured out that if you put the cap on exactly on top of the nipple so that the nipple is not bent at all (something that can happen if you just snap on the cover without looking), it won't leak even if you turn the bottle upside down. We never experienced leaks when feeding our baby so if thats the case with yours, I'd contact customer service and get a replacement.

Born Free bottles don't leak, all other ones I've tried (avent and playtex) leaked on me.

I have never had a problem with my Dr. Brown's bottles leaking - they've been fantastic!

I will say that if you are transporting them or shaking them, you will need to insert the little plastic disc otherwise you will have a mess. Admittedly, I threw out all my plastic discs and just make sure the bottle remains upright when transporting them and I've never had an issue. I also bought a set of the Dr. Brown's mixing caps for when I'm making the bottles so I can shake or swirl the formula without spraying it all over the place.
