It depends on a lot of things but yes it can go bad. You will have to open it and taste it to know.
I'm making a roast chicken tonight, and I'd like to make a giblet gravy like I did for Thanksgiving, it was so delicious and I'd like to try it with chicken :) Anyway, the recipe calls for dry white wine. I don't have a regular bottle, but I do have one of those tiny bottles that come in little 4 packs of Chardonnay. BUT, I've had it in the pantry forever. Seriously, I think I've had it since my husband and I first moved in together, which was nearly 8 years ago. The label says it's 2002 vintage. There is not an expiration date on the bottle... do you think it's still any good?
Thanks ladies! I opened it and it still smells like wine and tastes OK, so I'm gonna use it. It's not that we never drink wine, in fact we do that quite often (LOL), but I've just had this little bottle knocking around in my pantry forever with no excuse to use it.

For cooking you should be okay. Wine "turns" or can become "corked" and basically goes bad if air gets in it or it's stored improperly. It can indeed become AWFUL -or turn to vinegar. Smell and taste a bit and you'll know! Turned wine will make you want to hurl!
.
If you're cooking with it, I think you'd be okay. I don't drink red wine but always have an open bottle on my counter just to cook with, I just keep it corked.
Some liquids, if exposed to heat or sun, will grow mold inside the bottle, even if it's never been opened.
Hope you get a better answer than this ;)
yes, it should still be good ... it does go bad after it's been open ... however was it stored in a cool dark place? If so, then yes, you should be able to use it.
Yes, it can go bad, VERY bad.
If it has not been stored properly it can become rancid or "corked" (which does not need a cork) to go bad..
So I would suggest to open it and taste it if it tastes great, put it in the fridfe and use it when you are ready, if not, it is a great time to purchase a new bottle. Since you all do not drink very often, maybe give the rest to a neighbor..
I'll disagree with the others. Wine certainly CAN and does go bad. Open it up and take a whiff...if it smells like it would better serve you over a salad or to take off nail polish, you'll need to get a new bottle =0)
My husband collects wine and we've moved a few times being careful not to let his wine get too warm, etc. but unfortunately, probably thousands of dollars (or more) have been lost when we open a wine that should be at it's prime and instead it could be used as paint thinner! (and ends up literally pouring money down the sink).
As long as it has not been opened it will be fine. Over the years it does lose some of its flavor and depending on the wine can taste more like vinegar if it is not stored properly. Extreme changes in temperature or sunlight can make it go bad. However, when you are cooking with it the process of heating it up removes most toxins and alcohol. So if it was stored in the pantry in a low light area it should probably be good to cook with but not to drink.
If it's been in a relatively dark, cool place it should be fine. Open it up and if it smells like vinegar, then don't use it but otherwise, it should be fine for cooking. It might be a little yucky for drinking but cooking will be fine. If it's bad, you can always just use chicken stock or water instead.
