Does My Baby Know Me?

Ok, this is probably really silly, and I know I'm PMSing, but I went back to work when my son was 8 weeks...he's now 11 weeks, and I feel like he doesnt know I'm his mommy. I'v had rotating baby care for the past few weeks, including my mother, mother in law, and husband, until school is done and I'm off for the summer (any day now!!). He smiles and laughs for everyone but me. He sees other faces every day, all day, and by the time I get home, I might as well be a stranger. I was home with my older son till he was two, so I never went through this before. I'm ready to quit my job, but obviously cant, just to be home with him. Things are a little better over the weekend, and I'll be home with him all summer, but I dont know how other working moms leave the really young ones and go to work...I'm struggling!

What can I do next?

Y.,
I think that's the worst part of being a working mom. Look at the good news: you'll be home all summer with your son. I was in a very similar situation, although I took 16 wks of FMLA leave after having my son, it was VERY hard to go to work even though my parents were watching my son and who better? I was lucky in that way.
After returning to work FT for approx 4-5 months I decided I had had enough and that I did not have a baby at age 39 to see him for about 1-1/2 hrs after I got home from work before he went to bed. I used to feel that I would come home, have time to feed, bathe and put my son to bed and that was it. I finally told my boss that FT work was not working for me and asked if I could work PT. Worked 3 days and home 4, that seemed like a better balance to me. Hang in there--you will find what works for you and don't feel guilty, no matter what you do--I'm sure you are making decisions for the best interest of your kids. You are not alone. And, don't worry--your baby knows who his mom is--a mother cannot be replaced! God bless. :)

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, I'm sure that your son knows that you are his mommy. I wonder if it's just that at the time that you get home he is all puckered out. Just try to spend quality time with him when you get home. Also, can you call him on your lunch or break? Have someone put the phone to his ear and say "hello". It may sound silly, but he knows your voice. I know it's really hard right now, but it will get better. Truthfully, it will never be easy to leave your baby when you really want to stay home with him. But, like many of us, you have to work. At least you have your summer with him. Good luck and take it easy. :)

It was a struggle leaving my 12 week old son too. The worst day of my life. And, like you, I had convinced myself at one point or another that my child forgot who I was. All I can say is that those fears are normal (at least I think they are!) and eventually they will pass. Your child hasn't forgotten who is the sun in his universe - it's you! There's no way he could forget that! Think about it this way, maybe you are such a calming presence in his life, that when you do get home, all he wants to do is snuggle in tight and relax with you.

Hi Y.! If you are a teacher, have you looked into working for an online school? I am very fortunate to work for a cyber school from my home. I have a 7 month old and it has really worked out for us! If you have any questions, I am more than happy to help you out!
