Hi J. -
My son had the same condition. We didn't notice it until he was starting to stand up to go potty and his stream would go way to the left. He's five now, but he had the surgery when he was three and a half. He also had a recircumcision done at the same time as well as an umbilical hernia repair. We figured since he had to be under general anesthesia we should do everything at once.
That said, it's kind of hard to say exactly how long the recovery was for that versus the other surgeries. He tolerated it well and he has absolutely no problems now. We did have to apply a steroid cream to the opening at least once a day for a while, which wasn't very pleasant for him. You need to do that so that the hole doesn't close again, but it was pretty uncomfortable for him because you have to kind of open up the hole.
His surgeon was Dr. Cheng out of Children's Memorial and I highly recommend him. He's got a great bedside manner and my son really liked him.
I hope I helped some. Let me know if you have any other questions.
