I'm potty training my 2 yr old boy, and when he pees the pee stream goes up, so pee goes all over the place. He holds it down in the bowl and still sprays up. Has any one else had this problem with their boy? Wondering what causes it and how they fixed it?

What can I do next?

I have my boy sit on there backwards!!! Works AWESOME. First he would push his bum towards to bowl. Interesting position but it worked. Now he sits on there and pushes it down towards the bowl. If the toilet is a smaller one he can stand in front of it. His goes up and to the right! He can shoot a mile too. He'll make his daddy proud.. lol. I think over time it'll get better has he grows.

My friends son just had this problem... it had something to do with circumcision. He had to have a minor procedure to correct it and all was good after a few days. Good luck... that's a little discouraging, put a call into the pediatrician's office right away... the one who did the circumcision.

Hi,

My son had the exact same problem. I can't remember the medical term but basically the opening was closed slightly. The doctor said it usually happens in boys because of circumsions. While the skin is healing it can close together leaving it half shut.

My son had a minor medical procedure in the hosptial where they made a tiny cut re-opening the area. It worked like a charm. An hour after we were home from the hospital he went pee straight into the toilet. I shouted Hooray and he said "Mom my pee pee is fixed". No more cleaning the bathroom and potty training was great after that.

Teach him to hold it and aim. It's a messy job otherwise. Sounds fairly normal to me, though.

My son had the same problem when he was younger. It's gotten better over time - so I'd give it time before considering surgery options. We're at the end of potty training and he just decided he likes to stand to pee. I've noticed that if he holds it too tight while aiming that the pee arcs up. I just told him that he has to clean up any messes he makes -- and then the first mess he made he had to clean up (even with his newly broken leg). (yes, I'm a mean, mean mama :) So see how tightly he's holding it down into the bowl -- maybe that's making the problem worse.
Good luck!

He probably has meatal stenosis, you need to call your pediatrican or get in to see a urologist, I am a RN at childrens hospital and I see it all the time, its sort of common- good luck, A.

Casey: My son actually had the same issue he when he was potty trained. I actually talked to his pediatrician thinking something was wrong. He told me not to worry that my son was still young and it would eventually go away. He had to hold it down for a while I not sure when exactly it "stopped" happening, but I later he was able got pee standing up and it was all going the right direction. I would just give it some time.Best of LUCK!

Casey- My son had the same problem last year. His "opening" grew shut. They said it was very common. In the urologists office they numbed it with a gel and then a shot....it was not pretty. Then they took a pair of scissors and snipped the skin that was closing....again, not pretty. We then had to keep it lubed up for about a week. It grew closed again! About two months later he was having the same problem so this time they did a hospital surgery on it and stitched the skin back so it wouldn't close up again....
It was an easy fix to a long problem. Everything turned out great and he hasn't had any problems since.

Good luck.H.

Sometimes little boys can have minor congenital conditions that cause the urethra hole to be formed in the wrong place. Other times they can get strictures or stenosis where the urethral hole closes a bit and doesn't open completely. It could be normal, but he may need minor surgery. He needs to see the pediatrician, maybe a urologist to determine if this is normal for him or he needs treatment. It's not a big deal-quite common, but needs to be addressed and treated.

My son's pediatrician noticed that the slit was a little off (not open all the way). He told me to watch him pee without him holding it and see if the pee was straight, or went off to the side. Luckily it was straight, but if by age 8 or so, if there was a problem, then he would send us to a urologist. It would need to be "recut" correctly to avoid problems as an adult.

Those little "splash guards" aren't close to adequate! Maybe they are for some little boys, but not mine. I have mine "tuck it in" and hold it down. And now my oldest (he's 4 but has no interest in standing up) sits and then bends at the waist until his chin is almost on his knees. That does the pointing for him.

I have a 5 year old now with the same problem. We either have him sit and push it all the way under or have him sit backwards. I wasn't sure if it was because of his circumcision or just naturally. So I hope you find out some more help on this. Good luck.
