I purchased sliced american cheese in 3 lb blocks - each slice is NOT wrapped. So, I cut open the top very carefully and then cover with wrap and a binder to keep it fresh.
I vaguely remember a product from when I was a kid (maybe from the commodities days? - whoa, now I am dating myself) that you put an unwrapped 3 lb brick of cheese and it stayed fresh. Like a tupperware container? I don't think that cheese was sliced, but you could just plop it in there and somehow it didn't get hard . . .
I checked tupperware catalog and didn't see it. I found lots of storage for WRAPPED cheese slices. I did find some vintage stuff for Velveeta cheese blocks, but I don't think that is what I am remembering because there is no way we could afford Velveeta when I was a kid.
Thoughts? Anyone have the slightest idea what I am talking about? Don't worry, I won't try to guess your age if you do know what I am talking about (or know what commodities are) :)

SWH: I ended up ordering one off of ebay :) Got it for $1.95. Not sure if it will work for what I am looking for, but I'm happy to have it anyways!

Margie - the ones on ebay didn't look quite right, but I was young so my memory might not quite be good enough to tell. They all look like the cheese would get hard, don't they? But I remember always being amazed that it was (again, I was a kid). My mom has NO clue what I am talking about - she says we never got commodities. However, I think that is selective memory on her part.
I know what you are talking about. If I remember right the one we got actually came with a block of cheese with it. But that was probably at least 17 years ago. If it was me I would separate it into smaller chunks and put them in several zip locks. Maybe in 1 lb chunks or even 1/2 lb chunks.
Can't you just use Ziploc bags, or any other kind of air tight storage?

If you Google 'Velteeta cheese keeper' or 'block cheese storage container' you will find many.
Lots of people will wrap it tightly with cling wrap or use an extra large ziplock bag.
You have to keep the cheese from drying out and it doesn't freeze well (texture changes if you do).

Look on Etsy for Vintage Tupperware Cheese Keeper. I found a few, I think it's what you're looking for.
I just use a gallon size ziplock, cheese stays soft.
my mom had one like this. She would buy cheese slices in bulk because my brother could got through 10 slices in one sitting!

I use the softer sandwich bags and put a few slices in each one, as airtight as possible. Then I freeze them. If you take one baggie out a day before you plan to use it you will have slices of cheese ready to use.

I love questions like these - love looking up vintage stuff because I never remember it until I see it.
We had something like the butter dish and tray that could be used for cheese and crackers. Similar to the velveeta one but didn't have the funky tray.
I checked eBay.
