M.M.
I had mine tied while the doctor did my c-section. I had problems from that day on. Well untill I went and had then untied. But I have a problem with BC and really anything wired I put into my body or do to it. I wish you all the best.
Hey mamas,
Well I got the startling news today that I am going to be a mommy for the third time this coming November. My second is 13 months so it is a little sooner than we planned, but well, it's all good. So I am processing all this pretty well, but we will be done with three. I am thinking of talking to my dr about tying my tubes after birth. If you had this done, how did you do with it? I have heard some people have bad side effects hormonally, but my MIL had it done and has been fine. Also I am thinking about this new procedure that I think is called Essure, where there is a little insert inside the fallopian tube. Anyone had that done and it went fine? Anyway, I hope this doesn't come off like I am bummed about my child, I am not! I am surprised, but very happy, but well I just feel three is going to be enough and am thinking about what to bring up to my doctor. I would love your input, thanks....
Thanks for the responses so far, lots of good info. I will be 35 when my lil' one is born, and I will have three, so it's time I think. Not that there is anything wrong with having a baby post 35, but my goodness I'll have 3 kids 4 and under, holy cow!! But well, it's all gonna be ok. Thanks ladies, keep the responses coming :D

First off, congratulations! I had my tubes tied when I had my last one almost 18 months ago. I had a c-section so they were able to do it right then without any issues. I too have 3 children and we are completely done. It is somewhat sad thinking that I will never again experience a pregnancy or have a new little one but with that said, I really don't regret doing it. I know in my heart and soul that I am done. I haven't had any side effects or anything. I will warn you though, a friend of mine told me prior to me having mine done that she gained a lot of weight after getting hers done and I too have gained quite a bit since I had mine. I have done some research (unfortunately after the fact) and found that yes a tubal can cause some women to gain weight for some reason. I kind of wish I would have listened to my friend and done that research prior but it is what it is. Do some research on it and if you really want to have it done and you are planning to have a c-section it would be a perfect time to do it. I don't have information about Essure. Sounds like you have some time to do all the research on all your options before it comes time. Again, Congratulations!
NO! I had my husband tie his just before my last one was born!
I figured if I could be pregnant 5 times for him which resulted in only 3 children and 2 miscarriages...the least he could do was get a vasectomy. Surprisingly, he agreed.
There was a medical reason for doing this. Men do not suffer after effects from a vasectomy while women can have all kinds of complications from tubals.

After my 6th baby was born I had my tubes tied - like 15 minutes after the delivery (a vaginal delivery.) I did LOTS of research and got a 2nd opinion. I've had no issues, except that I still feel where my OB cut the tubes if I'm really tired or twist suddenly. Overall, that mild discomfort is nothing compared to the ease of no birth control worries ever again. I have no regrets as I have six kids and am now 41. I really was done. Talk to your doctor at your next visit and see what he/she says about your concerns. My last OB didn't even place the Essure in women. He felt that cutting the tubes was the best way to go. Any possibility that your husband might be willing to get a vasectomy? At any rate, congratulations and I wish you the best with your pregnancy and this next baby.
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I do know that I have seen lots and lots and lots of posts on this site from women who had their tubes tied and later regretted it and wanted to reverse it. You might want to wait a little bit for the pregnancy and post pregnancy craziness to pass before you make such a big decision. You can always have an IUD put in shortly after delivery, and it has the same success rate as a tubal.
Good luck, and congrats on the new little one!
I had #3 right before I turned 45 and had my tubes tied during the repeat C-section.
I have hot flashes and don't enjoy nursing him as much I did #1 (#2 was adopted, came forever home at 11 months, and did not nurse), but it's hard to know if they are related. In my family, I am a bit young for menopause though. SO - those are possibly realted side-effects, but I have had no others.
Congratulations! I love having 3!
p.s. My husband got snipped too. That was 1-2 days of no heaving lifting, some ice, and then....totally over.
You didn't mention if you will have a c-section or not (or I missed it! which I've been know to do in my tiredness! lol) but that's when I had my tubes tied - due to age and pregnancy complications. It was a piece of cake! My daughter is 18 months, I don't seem to have any side effects. A good friend had hers before she went home from hospital (not c-section though) a day or so after delivery I believe. She hasn't had side effects either. My periods have always ran every 21-23 days now they are more like 23-35 days, maybe a day longer, maybe the first day a little heavier (however I've always been light!). My friend always had sporadic periods and still does (every few months). I know nothing about essure. sorry! and no you don't sound bummed at all! I think you are being logical thinking ahead and trying to plan! Congratulaions!!!!
I had mine done 4 years ago after my twins were born. I was 34 when I had them and we already had another kid so I knew I was done, but I still felt a twinge of weirdness at the thought of not being able to have kids anymore. However, I am happy with the decision. It is a relief not to worry about birth control anymore.
I have read about the effects of the hormones after the procedure. I will admit that I cry more easily than before--I mean on commercials and tv shows--something I never did before. My doctor didn't seem to think it had anything to do with tying the tubes, though. Maybe the kids have just made me more sensitive! My doctor also told me that the hormonal problems reported are very rare.
Congrats on your baby!
My mom had her tubes tied 28 years ago after having my brother - no problems at all! I am having my third by c-section this summer. I've already told the doctor that he's tying my tubes while in there. A friend of mine also had her tubes tied after her c-section and she has had no problems either.
I had my tubal when i had the csection for my 4th I had it done for health reasons.. never heard bout what you are mentioning
Research it, first.
Yes, there are... side effects/hormonal issues that happen.
Research it.
I did not, have my tubes tied, after my kids were born.
Still have not.
For the reasons, per the research I did on it.
I don't know about Essure.
Essure can have some pretty nasty side effects. My OB said that in about 15% of the cases she does, she'll have to remove the coil, remove a tube, or do a complete hysterectomy. It's still a pretty new procedure that can have problems with the coil perforating a tube, causing pain, etc. I know you can find anything negative about any procedure on the internet, but there were a lot of horror stories relating to essure.
My mom did-47 years ago-and she is just fine-and you will be, too! Many blessings!
I had a tubal after the birth of my second child. I had a scheduled c-section so I just had it done at that time. I have had absolutely no issues with it. My only concern is that I had the procedure done while still fairly young (mid-twenties) so we are hoping there is no "surprise" baby when I am in my late thirties. My husband's co-worker had the Essure procedure done. She is rather happy with it and has reported no ill effects.
