I have a two year old son who about six months ago started to get a diaper rash I spoke to his Doctor and the doctor suggested changing diapers & Wipes because the rash seems to be more of some kind of reaction. It's scaley and red and nothing seems to work.. I've tried Baby Aveno Oatmeal bath. Balmex, you name it i've tried it. Does anyone know of any Hypo allergenic diapers or wipes or diaper brand that might be less aggervating? Any suggestions at all would be wonderful. I don't know what else to do . The doctor is giving me some medication that doesn't seem to be working and he said the next step would be to go to the Dermatologist. It's very sad to see him grab himself in pain because the area is so aggervated. I changed him even when he's not wet I go through so many diapers trying to keep the area dry. I would appreciate any suggestions.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to thank everyone for your advice. I switched my diapers and wipes to the Seventh Generation brand it has no bleach and it's Hypo-allergenic fragrance and latex free. In addition to trying Aquaphor It's working no more rash.. Even the Dr. percribed medication couldn't get rid of the rash. Mom's do know best.. If any of your children are suffering from a diaper rash that just won't go away your child too can be suffering from allergies from the diapers and wipes. Thank you for your support.

Hello S.. My daughter had a terrible diaper rash, and i tried all the different types of diapers and wipes and it didn't change a thing, some actually made it worse. Finally I found a diaper rash cream that is hypoallergenic and works wonders!!!!! Her rash cleared up in 2 days. You can only order it online at http://www.grahamslambaby.com it costs about the same as creams in the stores, and is soo worth it! Hope this helps.

Hi S.
Are you sure your son has a rash? and not an infection? If nothing is working it could be a infection. My daugther had a yeast infection, about week ago. (It a was red all over)
I didn't know, I thought it was a diaper rash it turn out to be an infection. ( it cause because of the moist wet diaper) totally normal. My doctor recommended me to buy CLOTRIMAZOLE CREAM 1% ( It's antifungal cream) You could buy it at Longs store or any DRugs store near you. You apply three times a day. My baby's rash is all gone after five days.
This I know it's true because even my son got it too! When he was a baby. I was suprise to find out boy could get it too!
My son's doctor recommend the same thing!
So I would double check on it... If they are red and some are like single dots indivial red dots could just infection that is why the creams or not working.
Good Luck

My son went through a period of rashes so bad he'd get second degree burns. The doc had me putting on a triple dose of the antifungal, bacitracin, and hydrocortizone. It does well. With the scaly rash, you probably want something more like vaseline that's going to stay versus a lotion that'll just be absorbed by the skin and need more. So, vaseline is also something work trying. Good luck. It WILL get better!

S.,

I would highly suggest you try the brand Seventh Generation Diapers and Wipes which are hypo-allergenic and they do not contain any chlorine. Chlorine is usually used to bleach regular diapers white. This is also an environmentally safe and natural brand. They make so many different safe household products that do not release poisonous chemicals...very ideal for babies. I am not certain of all of the places you will find Seventh Generation products, but WholeFoods definitely carries it. Call your nearest WholeFoods and ask if they carry Seventh Generation products to make sure.

Also, between diaper changes, let your son run around bare bottomed for a few minutes so that he gets aired out down there. It really helps with the healing process.

Another factor to be aware of...
like the previous mom whose daughter had a yeast infection, it may be a bacterial infection. In such a case, the creams will only work for a short time and then it will come back. You will need to cut back on feeding him anything with sugar or yeast. Sugar feeds bacteria. Fresh veggies juiced is very good for him. Try experimenting with different blends to fit his taste buds. If you do a lot of fruit, cut down and stick to citrus for a while. Generally moving to a low sugar diet would be very beneficial, overall.

I'd love to know your results when you try these things!
Good Luck,

R.

you said that you spoke to his doctor, did your son also see the doctor? My son had a really bad diaper rash once and it turned out to be an infection due to him scratching at a "normal" diaper rash and introducing bacteria. anyhow, if you havent taken to see the doctor, do so and if she still thinks that it is just a diaper rash, you may want to high-tail it to the pediatric dermitologist.

good luck,
C.

My son also gets diaper rash to the point whee he screams in pain, and sometimes gets blisters. What I found helps with the discomfort is fill the sink or bath with warm water and use baking soda, it helps soothe the skin and leaves it very soft too.

Hi S.,
I still use this stuff on my 4 yo. who's out of diapers, Aquaphor Healing Ointment. I think it works well for just about any rash or irritation and it helps too that it's very thick. You can get it any drug store or even at Target or Wal-mart. Apply it liberally.
You may have to change the diapers and wipes like your Dr. suggested. I don't know of any diapers that are hypoallergenic, but I do know that there are wipes made without any irritating stuff like Pamper's sensitve wipes that are free of anything. You can even buy the generic brand of sensitive wipes at any store, which I personally think work just as good.

You might also want to make sure that it isn't eczema. My son has food allergies, so you may want to find out it isn't from food that he's eating, because I think it starts out that way.
Hope this helps you.

Have you tried using cloth diapers while this rash clears up??? My sons were the same way (around the time they needed to start potty training) and we switched out to cloth diapers here and there and it helped a lot. Plus, we wouldn't use the diaper wipes while their skin had this reaction (just stuck them in the tub and washed away the filth) If you need some advice on using cloth, I can help too!! Good luck =)

Hey S.,

I had my son's pediatrician recommend and revisit the common diaper rash ointment, believe it or not...He recommended regular vaseline. He stated that it provided a barrier that prevents the acidic moisture on the skin when in contact with fecal and urine. Gross and fun to talk about but helpful to other mom's--hopefully?
Also he repeated the bathing routine, keep up on it and be healthy too. Good luck. Try Butt Paste too, if the vaseline doesn't work (target or walmart)

My daughter had something similiar and it ended up being eczema. BUt it could also be a yeast infection, ask your doctor for an anti-fungal cream and ask about eczema. You could google search pictures of the eczema and see if it matches, in that case I would go to the dermatoligisht, my doctor has been giving me the run around about it.

when my children were little my mother made up a mixture of vaseline and cornstarch. I thought this was just a old family folk tale. But it worked! Better than anything I tried, and I tried EVERYTHING. The vaseline provides a protective layer over the skin while the cornstarch absorbs the moisture.

good luck C. T

My 2 year old son has very sensitive skin and we battled rashes until I made 2 changes -- powder and naked-time. I desperately bought some burts bees powder (loaded with fragrance and stuff I thought would hurt him) and it helped so much. also, around 18 mos.b we started keeping his pants off at home. the benefit ... he goes to the bathroom in the potty all the time at home now, not so good when we are out and he has diaper on. There were messes, but I bought a steam cleaner, invested in some bac-out, and diligently cleaned them all. I was just pondering the other day how great his skin looks and how i never thought i would see that. Let me also say that his rash sounds like it could also be a food allergy, so if you haven't thought along those lines you may want to. Oh, for wipes-- when at home, use a warm wash cloth. no wipes. there are none out there that dont hurt a rash. good luck!

My son gets diaper rashes every once in awhile which are really painful. I have found that Triple Paste works really well. You can get it in Target. It is a little expensive, but it is worth it when he no longer has the diaper rash. I hope this helps.

Hi S.: May sound weird, but its an old Mexican holistic type of relief. SO don't laugh until you try it.
Boil Lettace and then let it cool so that it is a little warm. Put a couple of leafs on his behind, but before you do that, take the lettace water and soak the baby's bottom in it for a while, it will be very refreshing for him. After his lettace water bath, put a couple of leaf of the lettace on his behind and put the diaper on. Try it for a couple or days and see if it works. I used that when my daughter was a baby because my grandmother was visiting and it worked wonders on her rash. She is now 23 years old. My grandson, just went through a bought of the bad rash and nothing worked, if anything the balmex burned him even more, so my mother reminded me of the lettace treatment, we did it and it worked wonders. Within 3 days he was fine. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to try it. See if it works. Its cheap, its natural and what could it hurt. Let me know what you think and if you tried it. Good Luck

I don't know if you can do this, but sometimes a little time out of the diapers works wonders. My son used to have the same problem mostley when he went to daycare. So our doctor suggested letting him run around the house without a diaper for about an hour each day/evening. The air gave him enough time to heal and clear up. We just put a longer tee shirt on him, but he still got plenty of air to help with the healing. Not to mention that it is free and not some medication. Hope that helps.
