My son Ryder rarely gets diaper rash but the other day when he came home from a weekend at his Father's he had a very red tooshie. I don't know what could cause such a severe diaper rash in a 24 hour period but I was wondering what ideas you might have. Someone told me it could have been something he ate. I just need to figure out what it could be. It isn't the first time he has come home with a diaper rash like that. If you could help me figure it out then i could talk to the father about whatever he is feeding him that is causing this rash. We both use the same brand of diapers and my son isn't allergic to any of the different baby shampoos or powders. He has a pretty broad diet so I don't think it could have been caused by something he ate. I'm wondering if I just need to talk to him about how often he is changing Ryder.
Hi S.,
I am a 44 year old grandma of two boys. diaper rash isn't normally about changing. I'd stick with questions about food. my 3 yr old grandson is allergic to chocolate. Ask if he's having diharrea? good luck! the best thing to use is warm baths, dry butts, & butt paste!

Food culprits...too much fruit, juice, or acidic foods. I used Triple Paste on my girls when they had a bad rash. Worked wonders.

Maybe he is using a different brand of wipes? I have also found that some kids can get bad rashes very fast. Sometimes it's just a matter of the person in charge not smelling the bm fast enough. When you are in the room when it happens, sometimes it isn't noticed as much as if you were out of the room and walked into it after. I try really hard to get them out of those as instant as possible. I also rinse the soap out of the wipes if they are a little red.

S. - My son went through a period of time where he would get AWFUL diaper rash and honestly they would just pop up. One change he would be fine, the next it was painfully red - sometimes so bad it was blistered and even bleeding. He would scream when we changed his diaper, it was heartbreaking. We would have to rinse the wipes becuase the alcohol would burn him when we tried to clean him up - or use a wet washrag.
If it's that bad, what I found worked wonders was a warm bath with conrstarch. Let him soak and play in it for a bit then if possible try to keep him naked for a while to let it air out. They have powder with cornstarch too and that also helped.
Believe me, we are very diligent about changing his diapers so I know it wasn't a matter of leaving him in a dirty diaper too long. We figured by process of elimination that if he eats too much acidic fruit, that seems to trigger it. I looked and SO much fruit is acidic - bananas, apples and watermelon seemed to be the safer bet for us. He could have the acidic stuff, but in moderation. Which was tough for us as my kid loves tomatoes, oranges and pineapple - ALL acidic. He is now just over 2 years old and thankfully seems to be outgrowing it.
Please be careful not to accuse dad. Just tell him he's been breaking out - you may not want to point out that it's specifically when he comes home as it may sound like an attack - and you are just trying to pinpoint why. If you present it to him like you are trying to figure it out together, I'm sure it will be received much better. Maintaining a good - or as good as possible - relationship with him is in the best interest of your son so try to keep your attitude in check for his sake. I know it's tough, but in the long run, your son will thank you for it. Belive me, I know first hand...
Good luck!

My daughter, who is 20 mos, gets really bad diaper rash with acidic foods such as mandarin oranges. I have found that Dr. Smiths diaper rash cream has been the absolute best when it gets really bad. It sometimes appears to have blisters with it and this cream almost clears it up over night. Take a look and see if he's eating lots of fruit when he seems to get the rash. That's just one suggestion...I'm sure out of many. Good luck!

It could be a yeast infection. They come on super fast and the rash looks really bad. Kinda of raised like tiny blisters. They can bust open and cause raw skin. It can be hard to get rid of because it grows in a hot moist environment (diapers). I read the previous thread about getting a rash while teething. Chances are that it was a yeast infection because the babies immune system was weak and couldn't fight it off like it usually does. We all have yeast with us all the time. Our good bacteria can usually fight it off for us except in times of sickeness or in environment when yeast thrive. It is treated with antifungal cream prescribed by a doctor. I also have used monistat for yeast infections that I had on hand and my doctor said that was a good idea. It could also be your child not being cleaned well enough after diaper changes. We are red heads and have super sensitive skin. I clean my son in the sink every time he uses the bathroom and he NEVER gets a rash. If dad has him or someone else and they don't clean him well enough he swells up and gets really red. I soak him in the bath and put diaper cream on him. With my method he never needs diaper ointment. God bless!

My DD gets diaper rash from time to time...Here are the main culprits...
1. Sitting too long in a wet/poopy diaper
2. Pooping a lot in one day - even if it's changed right away
3. Too much juice
4. Too much tomato/tomato sauce
5. Too much acidic foods (oranges, citrisy stuff)
Hope this helps!!

my daughter rarely gets diaper rash. i am freak about changing her. the other night within the span of maybe 10 min (she slipped one past me) she had a flaming red behind. it definitely could have been something she ate. so diaper rash can happen really fast!
we even use A&D ointment on her with every diaper trying to be proactive. on my kiddo i have noticed that the A&D works better than the white balms. generic brands work just as well as name brand for us.

Hi S.,
I've noticed that either highly acidic fruit (like pineapple) or corn causes a slight rash with my fourteen month old son. So, maybe it's food related.
However, another friend of mine's son is prone to yeast rashes- so it could be that as well.
Either way, my pediatrician recommended slathering on Triple Paste and then putting a light coating of baby powder over the paste (careful to keep powder away from face). This combination cleared my son's rash up within a day.
*The Triple paste is a little more pricey; however I don't use it everyday; just when needed*

Good Morning S., Congratulations on having a good working relationship with your son's father.
There are a number of things that could or would cause a red hinny. Is Ryder teething? That really causes runny stinky diapers, red hinny's. Is he drinking a lot of Juice? Sometimes the Acidic levels change in their little systems and that can cause it too.
Zane our 15 mo. old gr son gets so red at times he blisters in a matter of hours. He can be clear and smooth before nap time and red as a beet when he gets up. Along with a yucky stinkipoo diaper. He has 12 teeth and I think he's getting more molars. Ain't NO way I am sticking my finger in his little mouth... lol
We have found *FINALY* Aquaphor really heals quickly. His Eczema is even clearing up.
When you talk to dad don't accuse, only ask how often he might change Ryder as your trying to determine if maybe it is something that isn't agreeing with him now or maybe he might be cutting more teeth. And maybe he can help you figure it out.
God Bless and keep up the good communication. It's harder on the child later on if there is arguing and disagreements between you both. ( I know from where I speak ie type..lol ) I was one of those Kids. It was at time Brutal.

There are lots of posts so maybe someone said this, but our daughter will have that happen when she's teething. It's very sudden - I'll change a wet diaper and and she's fine then two hours later change her and find her bottom has a terrible rash that hurts with wipes. I just use a wet washcloth instead. She's even had it so bad that it's blistered. Unfortunately, there's nothing that will make it better except that tooth coming through. We do use diaper cream to keep it comfortable for her, but that's about it. Then after a couple of days, it goes away. Good luck!

Make sure your son's dad knows not to give him straight juice. A friend of ours didn't know that and he would give his son full strenght orange, apple, grape juice and he always got a rash. Dad's don't realize that it is to strong for their little ones. Try Boudreaux's Butt Paste (walmart), it always helped ease the pain and heal the rash. We still use it for chafing. Good luck and God Bless.

S....first, relax...I am sure that "dad" isn't not changing him enough, poor dads always get such a bad rap. Even if he sat in a very soiled diaper for an extended period of time it wouldn't cause him to get a rash That badly in the space of time his daddy has him. Trust me I have seen Lots of rashes! It could be a food reaction like you said, maybe ask dad to keep a list of what he eats while he is there? Maybe it isn't a diaper rash, maybe it is a yeast infection?
I can understand your concern, but rashes "happen" and they are really no ones fault usually...my sister was the most attentive mommy ever and I never saw such hideous rashes on a child until her first, turned out she had chronic yeast infections.
Lots of luck, there are lots of great products out there = )

Hey S. -
Our little one had a bad case of diaper rash following a road trip. In only two hours, he went from a red bottom to it breaking the skin. It was terrible to see, I felt like a horrible Mom, and we didn't know what to do as it was a small open sore.
Our Ped recommended mixing a few Tbsp of baking soda w/ water in a spray bottle and using washcloths instead of baby wipes to clean up... they also recommended dabbing Malox on his bottom (w/ a cotton ball) to neutralize the acid. Seemed kind of weird, but it worked after about a week or so. And he had a minty fresh tooshie :)
Hope this helps.

this is why we're the moms! i have the same problem with my MOTHER of all people (who has raised four children of her own). not the diaper changing part, but the diet part. i swear she feeds my son ANYthing he wants when he spends the night with her. and my husband is awful about changing diapers. although he "will" do it when i'm not there and he has no choice, i have no doubt he waits until the last possible moment, hoping i'll come through the door. major wussy! SO since men will be men and who knows if they'll ever change (you're not with him so i imagine there's no point in hoping? Lol!) i would suggest pushing desitin and baby powder on him. just make sure he has it every time your son is over there, and make sure he uses it with EVERY diaper change. maybe that will cut down on some of the diaper rash, nip it in the bud. good luck! diaper rash is the WORST!

But let me tell ya, when Im gone all day my husband def doesnt change the baby as much as I would of. I sort of know around when my baby goes #2 so Im always looking for it and change it asap. But as a dad I dont think they think like that. So unless he smells really bad he probably doesnt notice right away.....Men! Also I dont know if hes been sick, but whenever I give my kids any kind of medicine their stool can cause diaper rash. Anyways Hope it gets better!

I can be caused by something he ate, or if being left in a diaper for along time, its good to find out from him what he feeds him if he fed him something different than you feed him. And ya its important to change him when needed. I know if my son sits in a poopy diaper and i dont know that he pooped if he is of in another room playing he dont always let me know hes poopy so he does get a rash on his bottom. Soak him a warm bath with baking soda and use lots of a&d ointment after the bath.

Yeast, as mentioned by a few others, is a huge culprit in diaper rash; and the problem originates internally. An antifungal cream is great topically, but restoring the good bacteria in the intestinal tract will help keep the yeast in check. Your local health food store will carry a probiotic for children. Read labels and get advice from the help there. Probiotics come in capsule form and can be opened up and put in food or formula with no strange taste.

Hi S.,
I, too, had to deal with the whole going-to-the-dad's-house issue. I know it's not fun or easy.
Since this has happened more than once, I think you are right in asking him how often he changes your son. We all know that some men don't like changing diapers, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's the problem.
When my son gets a rash all I do is treat it with the creamy Desitin and change him more often, or as soon as I know he goes. The rash, no matter how severe, is gone within about 24 hours.
Well, from what you said, that's what I think it is. I'm sure you'll get more responses, so you'll be able to see what the majority thinks and go from there.
Good luck and give your son a HUG from me! ls

My thought is that a rash this fast was caused by not changing the diaper fast enough. Don't get mad at dad right away, he might have had him out and forgot supplies or there could be other reasons that he had for not changing him immediately.
A product called Butt Paste is the absolute best for a diaper rash, we've tried them all! If this is your first experience with diaper rash, you've been extremely lucky!

My guess would be that he's waiting too long in between diaper changes... and it's not something he's eating. Just mention it to the father. Let him know that he should be changed at least every 2-3 hours, more often if he's poopy or really wet.

If he isn't leaving the diapers on too long, I would say it has to be something in his diet. My daughter got a terrible rash everytime she ate watermelon at this age. Strange food allergy, but we figured it out, and she didn't get another one after we eliminated that from her diet. we had to wait until she napped to cut watermelon that summer. The next one, we explained to her that she was allergic and it gave her owies and we gave her cantelope or strawberries instead. most types of sausage gives her a body rash too, so it isn't the only food allergy she has, and it manifests itself differently.

One thing I do for my daughter is put Desitin on her bottom every time she goes down for a nap and at bedtime...even if she doesn't have a rash. Then, if for some reason she does get diaper rash, I put the desitin on and then put Vaseline on top of the desitin. This helps to provide a moisture barrier...and this REALLY works. My mom told me about it...she did this for me and my brother when we were little. The only suggestion about food choices is to try and tell Ryder's Dad to limit juice. I know that if my daughter drinks alot of juice she is more apt to a diaper rash. I hope this helps. Good luck.

You might just to tell Dad that he came home with a rash & you were just wondering if he noticed it. He may get defensive & think you are attacking his parenting...I don't know him so I cant say. Just ask if he ate anything different. A&D ointment worked well for my kids. I will say though, that no matter how often we change my daughter whenever she is working on a tooth she gets a horrible rash. You might just mention to dad to make sure he is changed often & put on some cream when he does change him. Good luck & hope your little guy gets better!

Also, if you are looking for a quick fix, my pediatrician swears by this, and after using it, I do too. Mix equal parts of cold cream and liquid Malox, smear it on a dry bottom and it clears up my daughter's rash in hours.

I wouldn't worry, sounds like the rash just popped up to me. It happens to my daughter too! She's just fine one diaper change and then...whammo! Put stuff on it, but if it looks red AND bumpy/scaly it is probablya fungal infection. You'll need to get some OTC athlete's foot medicine (generic brand is cheaper and works the same) from a pharmacy and apply it twice a day. In between times use a regular diaper cream.

Hi S.,
My daughter never had diaper rash, either, until my daycare lady took on another child and suddenly had more than she could handle. The diaper rash was caused by my daughter going long periods of time wearing a messy or wet diaper. She quickly realized that she couldn't handle so many children and once the new baby left, the diaper rash went away.
