My husband is a type 1 diabetic who's a1c came back at a 7.2 I would really like to bring this down and not let it get this high again. Does anyone have any cookbooks or meal plans that work and are easy to follow? He is also pursuing a career in law enforcement so I would really like to be able to have full control of the diabetes and let him live a full healthy life. He has had diabetes for 16 years

What can I do next?

Hi S., a month or so ago I posted a question about diabetes as my MIL was just diagnosed. I got a lot of great responses. I think there is a way to look back through posts- might be worth while.

I did go to the library and got some great cookbooks. The one I liked the best was called Month of Meals, by (I think) Christine Welch. That one happened to have vegetarian meals, but I think it may have been a series. What I loved is that it was almost a flip chart. All pages are divided from top to bottom in thirds. So you can mix and match and make a whole day- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There were also snacks and things, too.

Good luck!

My husband's blood sugar went all over the place two years ago. I put a dropper-full of stevia (not in glycerin)into 2 cups of water for him to drink. Within a week, he stopped having insulin shots and has had no further problems with his blood sugar. It's not a sugar. If he tries it, have him check how things are going and hour after the first time. Let us know!

My mother was a diabetic for 34 years. Ask the Dr. what he/she recommends as far as a diet plan. Then go to the library and check out the cookbooks and see which ones you really use and like before purchasing. I would also call the Barbara Davis center and see if they have any ideas.

Hi S., my husband is also a Type 1 diabetic. He was diagnosed just a little over 1 year ago, so I'm not sure that I'd have anymore advice for you. I've found a website... http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp. I used their recipe calculator and it helps me calculate how many carbs are in the meal I'm making, so I have a better idea how much insulin my husband needs to take per serving. If you type in diabetic in their search engine it will pull up many recipes that are good too. I hope this helps! I can imagine that a career in law enforcement is stressful, so that could be adding to his higher blood sugar as well. Diabetes is so unpredictable and crazy! It's wonderful that you're so willing to help him lower his a1c. When my husband was first diagnosed they admitted him to ICU to bring his blood sugar down. His a1c was 12 something! I'm happy to say after a year, his last a1c was 5.8 (I think). Good Luck to your family!
