Hello mama how are you. My name is S.. I'm 32yrs old and a wife and mother of a 6yr old. I take of my mother and she is a diabetic. Now a 234 blood sugar reading is high. You want to keep it at least 100-150. Well that's what my mothers doctor tells her. Watch what you eat. eat less sugar and less salt and you should be fine. It's a very hard thing to do but you will get use to it. Hope I was some help.

P.S. Always eat!!LOL

Having diabetes is not at all the end of the world, but it does mean that you need to pay special attention to diet, exercise, and your body. It means that you need to pay attention to your blood sugar levels becuase there is a range that is normal...234 is quite high. Ask your Dr. about diabetic education classes. You really need to take one in order to make sure you understand what is going on and how you can best take care of your body!! Again, diet and exercise are very important! YES..you do need to eat but you need to eat healthful foods (as we all do!!) that don't contain a lot of refined sugars because your body can't break them down. This is because in type 2 diabetes your body is failing to use the insulin it produces. Exercise helps your body do that though. Check out www.diabetes.org - it is the American Diabetes Association website. There is a link there for recently diagnosed people. It should give you a lot of helpful information!! But definitely enroll in a class to help you understand and know what to do. Good luck as you start this new phase of life. Take care.

http://www.bddiabetes.com/us/ Try this site for some info. i agree with the other posters. It's dissapointing that your doc didn't set up a nutritional consultation and diabetes education and give you the basic rundown. I would bring this up at your next appointment and if things are not resolved perhaps a new doc is in order? It's your right as a consumer to leave your doc if your service isn't satistfactory. You will also need to find a podiatrist for diabetic foot care as you should no longer be trimming your own toenails. Diabetes slows your circulation especially in your limbs making it had for cuts to heal. Make sure you check your feet for cuts, bruises etc every night, you don't want to lose them! (off my podiatric soap box now)
Good luck and feel free to ask any questions, it sounds like these ladies have a lot of great info to offer!!

Oh my gosh, shame on your doctor for not explaining this to you! Never skip meals when you are a diabetic. You need to maintain a "normal" blood sugar reading. Did you doctor tell you to watch you diet, or did he/she put you on oral meds, or insulin injections? If it is diet induced diabetes and they want you on a diabetic diet, you can buy a diabetic cookbook and cook from that. Your son can eat that stuff too. This is a good time to make healthy changes in both of your diets. This may ward off diabetes in your sons future. I would say, call you doctor for more info, or find a new doctor that is more informative. Obviously, your doctor did not do any teaching with you, and that is just horrible. This is a serious disease that is completely managable if you know what you are doing. But if you dont, you are setting yourself up for a lifetime of illnesses related to the diabetes. I am sorry you are diabetic, but with the right knowledge it shouldnt even affect your regular life. Just make sure you get as much info on the disease that you can. Good luck.

Hi S.,

We found out this poast August that my nephew has diabetes. It is a real adustment but you eat so much healthier...you hate to be forced but it will help you alot. You sugar is a little high...not too bad though. You have to eat. Your body produces glucagon (sugar) and the insulin that your body makes helps keep the balance. When your body has a high level of glucagon for a long time and the pancreas is not producing enough insulin - you get what they call diabetes. Its just not balancing. Are you on insulin? You should call your doctor and let him know but if he isnt available WHATEVER you eat make sure that the carbohydrates (the body turns these int sugar) are very low. Drink Crystal light and eat real low carbs today. Tomorrow is a new day though. Since you have Type II (adult onset)diet and exercise can reverse that. It happened to me and now I am no longer at risk.

Good Luck!!

Yes you need to eat. Did your doctor prescribe meds for you? You need to have him give you a referral to a diabetes education program-they offer them at most hospitals. I know that Beaumont has a great one cause I went thru it myself. Best of luck. If you want more info email me at ____@____.com

Hi my name is beth. I am in the same boat as you. What you should do is check your sugar in the morning and 2 hours after you eat. Drink lots of water, it helps to flush the sugar out of your system. DONT stop eating. eat every 2 hours. Breakfast (Biggest meal), snack, lunch, snack, dinner (should be the smaller meal) and another snack. This is a life change. If you stop eat that will drop your sugar and that can be just as dangerous. Learn to eat proper food. Avoid fryed foods. Potatoes when frozen turn into carbs which are sugar. On the nutrition facts on the back of the food you want to watch the total carb and sugar. try to avoid anything with high numbers their. exercise that helps lower sugar. I know it will be hard, heck its very hard on me. I am not doing a good job. if the put you on any medication take it, that will help to. Do nont take too much of the meds. If you do it can drop you blood sugar too low. if you have any more questions i would be glad to help.

Hi S.,
Are you type 1 or 2 diabetes? Your doctor shouldn't have let you leave his office without knowing about diabetes. 234 is high but you still need to eat. Watch your carb intake. You should go and talk to a dietition. Good luck.

I'm type 2, and found out a year ago. I'm disappointed your doctor let you leave without having you talk to a nutritionist or sending you to an education class. These are so beneficial.

DO NOT STOP EATING CARBS! Your body needs all the food groups, the food pyramid is great. Try eating small meals and snacks. This is a metobolic disese. Eating too little is just as harmful as too much.

I tried to type out some food/diabetic guidelines and the page timedout on me, and i lost it. I would love to help you and talk to you have questions. Getting used to being diabetic kinda scary and sucks and I know I would have loved to talk to someone my own age when it happened to me. ____@____.com ###-###-#### I'm a SAHM.

S.,

You need education, education, education. Doctors do not provide you the details in understanding the disease that you need.

Get in touch with your insurance to find out what resources are available to you under your healthcare plan. You need to be counseled by expert nurses, dieticians and pharmacist. There is so much more to diabetes than following blood sugar levels. There is skin care, heart wellness and kidney focuses as well. Managing diabetes is so important because it can lead to other serious problems.

The American Diabetes Association has a website with a weath of information.

I have been a nurse for almost 20 years, especially adult medicine. I have seen many persons allow their diabetes get out of control and the unwelcomed snow effect take over.

My husband was diagnosed as a Type I when he was 22, and I have watched him learn a ton about his disease. The advice he suggested was that you might want to get a new doctor, an endocrinologist, who specializes in the treatment of your disease.

You need to eat, but you need to eat foods that are low in carbohydrates, and those that are low in other sugars. Veggies, meats, cheese.... pizza is the worst thing in the world for a diabetic.

There are also a ton of support and informational blogs out there for people with diabetes, as well as a whole website (dlife.com) dedicated to helping people cope with and learn about diabetes. I also know a lot about the disease (its what I am doing my dissertation on) so feel free to email me directly, if you want more information.

Good luck!

Hi S.

It looks like the others have already provided some good advice. My stepdaughter was diagnosed with Type 1 at age 7, she is now 20. We have been through countless classes and Dr. and dietician visits regarding diabetes. If you should want to contact me at any time email ____@____.com or call###-###-####. I assume seeings you did not mention insulin that you are Type 2. Are you controlled by diet and exercise only at this point? When your blood sugars are over 150, a little extra exercise can help lower the blood sugar. The higher protein, lower carb, eat small meals often approach should help keep you more stable. Monitoring your blood sugars often and keeping a log of food intake and exercise can help you understand how what you are doing affects your body, everyone is different. With my stepdaughter, swimming was the best exercise to reduce her sugar levels. But you don't want to overdo in any area. If your blood sugar drops too low you will need to eat extra, which can add pounds and weight has a huge affect on the diabetes. It is all a balancing act. I wish you the best of luck and definitely find a diabetes educator that you can work with as soon as possible. Take Care, W.

You should never NOT eat when you are diabetic that is dangerous.

You should be keeping a food journal and checking your blood sugar at least 3x's a day. That way you can get a good idea of what your diet is doing to your blood sugar.

When your sugar is high like it was you should eat high protien low carb/low sugar foods.

Example 2 Eggs and 1 slice of High Fiber toast (Whole Wheat/Whole Grain bread) You'll get aprox. 15grams of Carbohydrates or 1 carb unit.

It's also important to eat regular snacks and meals so you don't go into a tail spin. 5-6small meals a day is good. Each one focusing on protien and fiber, and good quality carbs (not sugary things like cookies, cake, etc.) about 2hours after you eat check your blood sugar, and then you can look back at what you ate and see what could be effecting your blood sugar levels.

Are you Type I or Type II? My son is Type II so I know more about that one then Type I. Type I means that your body doesn't produce enough insulin and typically they take insulin at each meal. Type II means that your body produces insulin but doesn't use it properly. My son takes insulin every night for his Type II.
