Daycare Teacher Not Helping with Potty Training

I was told by my daycare that my son had to be potty trained by his 3rd birthday and I had to start bringing underware and changes of bottoms. So I have been doing this for a month now. Th eproblem I am having is that his morning teacher is lazy. She tries to wait for 1 1/2 hours before putting him on the potty. She claims that he screams and throws a fit that he doesn't want to go potty. I spoke with her today and just got mor frustrated with her. She tried to tell me that he has accidents in the afternoon with the other teacher. His potty sheet says otherwise and I only get 1 pair of dirty clothes which corresponds to his morning accident. Does she think I am stupid and can not count. I do not know what to do, he does fine at home, we have a 45 minute drive to and from daycare so he is in a pull-up and when we get home it is dinner, bath and bed, so during the week at home he is in pull-ups. But the weekends, he tells us when he has to go potty, and has only a few accidents. I can't afford to move them because I get a great affordable rate. I have seen toddler teachers come and go in the almost 3 years he has been at this daycare, so I tried to wait it out, but she doesn't seem to be leaving. I am thinking of talking to the director, but I don't know how good it will do. Any and all suggestions is appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I spoke with the director and they moved my son up. His new teacher is wonderful, he is using the potty regularly and has very few accidents. He says that he is a "Big Boy and only potties where big boys potty in the toilet" (his words, not mine). He is learning to pee standing up and wipe himself. His new teacher has helped him "grow up" and become a Big boy. The other teacher is still there, but his contact with her is limited. We had some other issues, but they fixed themselves when he was moved up. Thanks for all the advice.

I would talk to the director--but put your anger and frustration aside....and instead of expressing your displeasure with the teacher (which is probably 100% justified), ask the director what you can do to help your son be successful with potty training. Make it like you want to do everything you can to be helpful, and you aren't sure how to make him more successful at school. Maybe play just a little dumb, and show the director one of the potty sheets and ask her to help you interpret it--have her show you how often he was on the potty, when the accident happened, etc--and ask if maybe he could be encouraged to go the potty a little more frequently. Maybe the director will recognize that the teacher needs a little more training. I just know (from my job, and from my mommy experience) that anger/demands definitely have their place, but generally you really do catch more flies with honey than vinegar (is that how that goes) Try the sweet and innocent approach--if that doesn't work, you might need to be a little more forceful.

I would go and speak with the director. It sounds like she is just not doing her job. When you work in a daycare with 2 year olds potty training is part of the job. If she does not like to deal with that then she need to either go to another room or find a new job. Tell the director that he does fine at home and only has accidents with the morning teacher. If she is unwilling to help you then ask to have him moved up into the 3 year old room. Do not take no for an answer. If it is a chain like Children's Courtyard ask for corportate number. Call them and complain as well.

Talk with the daycare director!!! When I first started using the current daycare with my son he became a human chew-toy. I spoke with the teacher 2 times and she just kept giving me excuse after excuse. I told the director and she started keeping an eye on the teacher and every time my son got bit it was because the teacher was on her personal cell phone. She quickly got fired. I wasn't trying to get anyone in trouble but I wanted my son to be protected. There have been NO problems since! It will never hurt getting the director involved, you tried to address it with the teacher and she has dismissed your concerns. Start documenting all activity between you and the teacher (and your son's accidents) so you have your facts straight when you talk with the director. You are looking out for the wellbeing of your son. Good luck!!!
