Curly Hair

So as a result of my pregnancy, my hair went from stick straight to very curly... go figure! BUT, now I have NO TIME to mess with curly hair and NO IDEA what products to put on it to make it look decent. I've been either pulling it back into a pony tail (when I have zero time) or putting Fructis curl defing moose on it when I have a few minutes. This makes it look "wet", but also makes it to where if I touch it, the moose is gone. If I do nothing, it frizzes and looks awful. Any ideas on products that I could use? Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

K.,
Good news I know how you feel. i have very curly hair (since Birth) and i strive to look professional everyday. First point is to have a GOOD hair cut. second there is a line called Deva Curl. they specialize in products for curly hair. you can find them online and at specific salons that focus on curly hair. There is a no-poo shampoo that does not foam(no sulfates in the soap to dry your hair out) there are also great light leave in strays that allow the curls to bounce naturally and lay in place.

do not wash your hair everyday either. curly hair dries out quickly. Mouse is actully not recomended because is can dry out the hair.

so try the Deva Curl and get a great cut (even if you are groiwing it out) and dont forget that at about 4-6 months post pregnancy you may see changed ot your hair anyway. it may fall out, get dry etc. hormone changes in your system do that.

About me- I am a 35 year old professional and mother of three. 5, 2.5 and 7 months. Ive been there and there is Hope.

There is a great book called Curly Girl and the author's products can be found at www.evachansalon.com (DevaCurl are the products). Her book is helpful for learning how to deal with curly hair. Key thing is to not over wash it (it dries it and makes it frizzier).

Hi K.,
I have had curly hair since puberty - go figure! Through lots of trial and error this is what works wonderfully for me: I wash my hair twice a week, after toweling a bit I hang my head and spray Infusium Leave In Conditioner - not alot (it comes in a squirt bottle - I put it in a spray bottle) and then scrunch my hair. Then I put in about a dime size (depends on the thickness and length of your hair) of a curl definer and scrunch again. Takes about 2 minutes. One thing to remember - try not to touch your hair as its drying. Good luck!

Hi K.
I have been a professional hairstylist for 20 years and worked with and for Paul Mitchell Products. I would recommend to get a good moose or soft sculting spray gel that will "remember" the wet style and allow you to simply pass your fingers through for a dry look. We did many shows on this in the 90s where we styled the hair wet, let it dry on it's own or under a hooded dryer, and then brush it out. It's a perfect time saver for anyone in a hurry. Also, if your hair is long enough, I would suggest to invest in a set of good hot rollers. With Paul Mitchell Products in your hair, you can change your look without having to wash it everyday. I used to wear my hair wet/dry look on the first day and the second and third day would put hot rollers and then the fourth (if they still look OK) I would tie them up. It is a myth that we need to wash our hair every day and actually could be drying them out more than anything else.
Well I hope this helps. Good luck

Try using the hair product that SunSilk sells. I think it is a cream of some sort. I use a product on my curly hair that I got from the Middle East but I found that the SunSilk product is pretty close. I doesn't leave your hair all wet looking. Just calms down and frizz and gives you nice defined curls.

Good luck

K.,

I with you about the hair. Mine too went from straight to wavy, but only the back. Who knew? So, in addition to very thick masses of hair I now have the waviness to deal with, which I have no idea how to. I've gotten several hair cuts and different styles to see what works and haven't found the trick. Let me know if you find the magic answer. I'm also a high school teacher who went back after 12 weeks and struggling w/ the pumping thing in between classes. I have 3 boys 3 3/4, 16 months and 4 months. (Yes, the last one was a "surprise").

As someone who has had curly hair her whole life, I say celebrate! Curly hair is so much easier but does appreciate a good cut and special products. There's a place in Tysons that specializes in curly hair but charges ripoff prices. The best stylist I've found is Amanda at Cavallaro in the Columbia Mall. She has trained in Manhattan to understand curly hair but her prices are very reasonable. Phone is ###-###-####. There are two lines of products I like -- Deva (sold by Amanda) and Phyto. I think Graham Webb makes a line for curly hair as well. The best thing you can do though is get a good cut from someone who knows what they're doing so that your curls are liberated, and make sure your hair is well-moisturized.
Have fun.
