Cups for Young Kids?

What cups do you have for your young kids' drinks? We mostly have the plastic "Take & Toss" cups, minus the lids. My daughter chews on the spout of these lids, so they have long been tossed out!

She is 5 years old now. These cups are mostly ok, but I hate washing them in the dishwasher! They don't always come clean, and I don't have time to hand wash the cups all the time!

I'd love to replace her cups with some more "real" cups that are dishwasher safe & wash well.

Any suggestions?

(FYI, these are the "Take & Toss" cups I'm talking about... http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=279334... )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions! We'll have to go shopping :)

Our regular glasses are real glass, so I'm afraid to let her use those too much! We may see what the PX has after I pick her up from school today! New plates & bowls would be great too! We have a crazy mix of odd kid plates & bowls LOL

At 5, she should be using a regular cup for her dental health. I like the regular old, run of the mill plastic cups that come in a 6 pack at Target or Walmart (the dollar store sells them as well), and are sold with regular cups (not the kids section!!)... super cheap, so they're easy to replace, and they're dishwasher safe :) I had a pack of these that have lasted 7 years so far!.... my mom has them from when I was a kid, and now she gives them to my kids to use when we visit. If that's not a worthy investment, I don't know what is ;)

my 5 year old just uses the same stuff we use (mostly small glass wear); nothing special or different. When outside or traveling away from the house, she has a Camelback water bottle with a bite valve (it doesn't leak at all). We only put water in it, so cleaning it is easy. It is dishwasher safe though.

I do home daycare and my kids go to a regular, no lid cup at about 20 mos? I use either the IKEA plastic cups or a set of plastic "Juice size" cups I got at Target. The benefit to the juice size cups (you might find at any discount store), is their size. They are narrow and short so they fit perfectly for those small size hands. If you outfit very young children with the proper size tools they will be more successful at an early age. I remember my Momma using the same juice size cups for us when we were children. As we grew, we graduated to what our hand size could tolerate and work with.

Take and toss cups are a bit too tall and wide, IMO, for early success. Altho at 5 years old, I would think any cup should really do?

IMO-people are WAY too dependant on sippys for kids these days (and diapers and PU's for that matter, but thats a whole other subject peeve of mine). If I can do it , year after year, with as many as 8 children in my care (all generally age 3 and under, without any sort of helper assisting me)...why can't a parent do this?

Sorry...I didn't mean to hi-jack with my rant..but my advice...seek "juice sized" cups. Much easier and proper sized for success for small children.

About age 5 is when I start letting the kids use normal "glass" glasses. They just use the shorter ones, like juice glasses.

I have my 2 yr. old using real glasses. I bought special ones for her that are more sturdy. they are called Duralex made in france. LOL kinda sounds like a laxative! But anyways I bought them at World market, and I am sure you could get then online.
She knows that they are real glass so she is careful with them. Children like real things that make them feel grown up. It gave my daughter a sense of responsibility. They are really sturdy. have been dropped several times. I have only had one break on me and it was dropped on concrete outside. I bought the 4oz ones because the fit her little hands just right. they were less than $2 each.
Also with glass you don't have to worry about any plastic leaching out.

I have lately been wanting to transition both my kids (ages 22 months and 5.5 years) to glass and get rid of the plastic. We use Thermos funtainers and foogos stainless steel straw cups when on the go. I just found on amazon.com some silicone-coated glass options. I bought 1 EIO cup with silicone sleeve and my older son loves it! I'm considering buying some silikids glasses as well. Not sure if I want to order more EIOs or try the silikids. I'm waiting for a sale! Good luck!
