Coughing Fits When Husband Comes to Bed

I've typed this and read it - it sounds funky. But it's really happening!!

A few weeks ago I got sick. It came on like a tornado and really hasn't gone away. Kinda like a tropical thunder storm that likes to linger????

Now - my allergies (even using local unpasteurized honey) have been through the roof this year. My blue car looks yellow! Any way, I've been TRYING NOT to take medicine for this cough - it's bad - and just sucking on cough drops - helps - however - what has happened in the last two weeks when my husband comes to bed? I have a full on coughing fit. We've been married almost 16 years and this hasn't happened in the past - it's like I'm allergic to my husband!! I end up getting out of bed and going to the guest bedroom to sleep, where my coughing stops.

I love sleeping with my husband (most of the time!! who doesn't get annoyed with snoring?). But this is just RIDICULOUS.

I take a shower before I go to bed. My husband takes one when he wakes up. He smokes and does so outside. So what I am thinking is that the pollen is on him when he comes to bed. Taking a shower at night would wake him up...so what do you suggest we do?

What can I do next?

Amen Angie.. Yes, Acid Reflux.. I for years told myself it was allergies.

Finally ended up in the hospital last spring. Saw 6 different doctors.

On a CPAP now.. I used to snore even as a skinny teen.. Never felt like acid reflux..

Get he to the Doctor ASAP.

When I have a cough or tickle I always cough when I smell strong smells, especially cologne, perfume and deodorant. It might just be his deoderant that is ticking, even if it has never bugged you before.

It could be the pollen and the smoking. Both will stay on his clothes and skin when he comes to bed. I would ask him to shower right before bed so that he doesn't have those two things lingering on him.

Not to sound rude or judgmental, but the smoking is most likely causing your cough. Even though he goes outside the chemicals stay on his clothes, hair, skin and breath. Ask him to not smoke before bed for a few days and see if it helps.

It could be some of the pollen but it could also be that he smokes and it is on him. Allergies are bad this year and they get worse as an individual ages. If you are already having issues w/ your allergies and coughing, any trigger is going to worsen it.

If getting hubby to quit smoking isn't an option, ask him to at least shower before getting in bed (after his last smoke of the night). This will also limit the irritants getting in your bed linens.

You had bronchitis, right?
It's not at all unusual for bronchitis to be worse at night.

I'd say its from him being outside with all those allergens. Maybe he will shower before bed for a while?? Could he shower an hour before he goes to bed and not smoke or go outside afterward?

Would he be willing to take a lukewarm bath or just get in the shower and do a quick rinse off? My other suggestion is could it be acid reflux. I have allergies too and last year about this time I would get a dry cough/wheezing like and have coughing fits mostly at night. My doctor put me on an antibiotic and gave me a potent cough syrup to break it up. It didn't work. She then put me on prilosec and said it was acid reflux. I didnt think it was- I don't really have heartburn or anything, but she was the expert. Sure enough, it cleared right up. So you might ask your doctor if this could be related. Just a thought!
Hope you feel better soon!

I was going to say that if he takes a shower before bed, then maybe it's his soap that is bothering you, but maybe not. If he smokes before he goes to bed, then maybe it's the smoke smell? Or it could just be the pollen too. Do you have your window open? If you are in bed before him, then maybe when he opens the door, it swooshes an invisible gush of pollen into the room? Maybe you could put an air purifier in your bedroom to see if that would help. If a shower wakes him up too much, then see if he could take one about an hour before he goes to bed then it still gives him time to unwind a little. I don't know. That's all I can think of right now. I hope you feel better soon!

My husband is very stubborn about taking showers in the morning (I take one when I get the time to take one, sometimes I have to skip mine if it isn't convenient). My husband likes to take morning showers because he says he gets bed-head (his hair ALWAYS looks way too nice, having slept on it or not-he's very critical), and just getting his hair wet again at the sink doesn't fix it, he wants to take a full shower. Also, he is very much into his "routines". He likes certain things he does during the day to be the same as the day before.

I say it is the smoking and pollen combined. If you can, try to get him to take a shower before bed- although I know I would not be able to convince my husband otherwise.

BTW, this is the worst allergy season, I swear! ...and we live in the same area, so I know you are feeling it worse like I am.

Also, maybe it is just laying in that position for a period of time? Like, my congestion gets worse sometimes when I lay down... Maybe the congestion is making it's way to you more when you are laying down and perhaps makes your cough worse when he gets into bed and is just a coincidence? That would mean everything happens the same way every night, though.

You allergic to cats? Has your husband taken a liking to a neighborhood stray every time he goes out for a smoke? LOL:)

Maybe he could take his shower about an hour before coming to bed. That way he can get tired again. Also, suggest that he try the e-cigarette - I just got one and it really tastes like a cigarette with none of the harmful second hand smoke or allergens associated with regular cigarettes. That way he can shower, but still have a cigarette before bed. My GD is standing here and wants me to tell you that it really doesn't smell like a cigarette - she loves it when I smoke that instead of the real thing!

could bubble wrap him? GOSH that is a bummer. I got a bronchial infection back in March and I am still coughing, even after a round of anti-biotics. If I try to really laugh hard, or yell to loud it comes on and lasts for 10 minutes at least. I am not sure how to get rid of mine, but I WISH I would start coughing when my husband comes around. LOL

When my youngest daughter was a baby, she came down with RSV, which is basically a really bad viral lung infection. Her daycare provider was a smoker, but only did so outdoors, not in the presence of the children. However, our pediatrician told us at the time that even if the person smokes outdoors, the smoke and toxins cling to the person's skin, hair, and clothing. He advised us at the time to switch daycare providers at least until our daughter got over the lung infection, otherwise she would have a very hard time getting over it at all.

Now, applying that to your current situation, I believe it's possible you're reacting to the smoke that lingers on his hair, skin, and clothing. Your lungs are extra-sensitive due to your allergies and recent bout with the flu/cold, and they just can't handle the toxins. Could your husband smoke his last cigarette of the evening earlier, take a shower, and then maybe have a little time to relax and unwind after that? I'm sure you can think of some creative ways to do that. ;)

Well, unless he walks in the door from outside and goes directly to bed, then I'd suggest that he get a shower once he is "in" for the day/night. He doesn't have to get in the BED when he gets out of the shower.... of course.... you might decide that you do want to get in the bed... but... hmm... maybe you could convince him to shower before bed.. ya know?

ETA: And there is no reason he can't shower again in the morning if he wants to. It only takes a guy, what, 5 minutes? They shave at the sink, not in the shower.

My husband and I have been doing this too! We sort of have this hard, choking coughing fits only at night. Sometimes I wake up and I'm actually feeling like I'm suffocating! And I checked on Jackson the other night, and he was doing the same thing! What helped us is a THICK layer of vicks on the bottom of our feet at night then cover with cotton socks. No more coughing. I hope it gets better for you! xoxo

I'm having basically the same situation with the night time cough attacks... for like a month now.
Once I'm in bed it starts, and I'll have several spells during the night.
It might not be hubs causing it, might just be that you've reclined and set it off. Mine usually starts about 20 minutes after laying down.
My eyes are all crusted in the morning too, it's horrible and I've never been allergic to anything before.
Hatin this spring.... I believe it's the oak tree pollen that's jacking me up.
After I cough to death for about 5 or 10 minutes I'm usually okay for a few hours. I just started taking benedryl and I think it's sorta helping.

My husband has coughing fits when he sleeps with me!! I have stripped the bed and cleaned everything, and he still did it. We think it is the animals. When our dog is scared he hides under our bed. It has helped to vacuum under there and keep up with it, and get new pillows too. He has been to the allergy dr and nothing is coming up on the radar. Good luck to you I hope you figure it out, and hope you get to feeling better soon!!
