I feel silly asking this, like I should know this already. Can conception take place when we are not ovulating? Is it difficult to get pregnant when not ovulating? Has it ever happened to you?

What can I do next?

yes, there is a phenomenon called spontaneous conception not often talked about-i suppose since it would be difficult to scientifically prove.

I got pregnant before I ovulated. It was day 8 of my cycle. Call me fertile I don't know but I do know it happens. My first day of my period was December 25th (I know great day!) and I got pregnant on January 1st or December 31st (whichever way you want to look at it... and then I ovulated on January 5th. So it happens! (that was five months after my son was born.

You have to ovulate at SOME point to conceive.... My son (pregnancy #1) was conceived on a 130-day cycle. My daughter, conceived 16 months after I had my son, was my FIRST postpartum ovulation (ie no period back between the kids. Yipee!) So clearly you can conceive if you're not ovulating even remotely regularly - it just takes a bit of luck. You can tell when you've ovulated by charting temperatures. That's really the only sure-fire way to tell.

You might wish to go to the website fertilityfriend.com. It will be very helpful when learning about ovulation and your menstrual cycle.

But to answer your question, you are only fertile the few days surrounding your ovulation. Once the egg comes out, it lives for only 24 hours. Sperm can live up to a maximum of 5 days. So, no - you cannot conceive when you are not ovulating or not about to ovulate.
