My husband and I recently decided we wanted to try to have another child. The problem is I have always had an irregular period, and have only ever been able to have a regualr cycle with birth control. So the question is, has anyone tried to have children with an irregular cycle, and if so, what was your experience? I cant decide if I should go see the OB/GYN, since I havent been in a while, or should we try first? Thanks in advance for your advice!

What can I do next?

Isn't trying just having a lot of sex. Don't really see the down side. When I had my son, we did not schedule sex for my 'fertile' periods. We just stopped using birth control. When you say irregular cycles - do you mean 20 days one month, then 35 days, then 18 days, etc? Or do you mean you skip a lot of periods? Also - if you haven't seen you ob/gyn for a year, it's time to go anyway.

Hi J.,
I have a SUPER irregular and was still able to conceive with ease. At the time I conceived my 2nd child, I had not had a period in over 70 days. You just need to get in tune with your body. Our bodies tell us when we are ovulating, by discharge. Do a little research on line about recognizing when you are ovulating; relax and have fun practicing in the mean time. It is totally doable!
Best wishes and let me know if you want any more detailed information!!!
Jennifer

Having sex every other day should cover all the bases!

If you're not up for all of that, then try one of those ovulation predictor kits.

My cycle was all over the map when I got pregnant with number 3. It took us a while (6 months --I got pregnant on the first try with my other three pregnancies).....What pushed us over the edge was just us having lots of sex. We had it every other day starting on the last day of my period and continuing until I KNEW i was pregnant.

My suggestion is to pick up the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler
http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Charge-Fertility-Anniversary...
The information in this book may be able to help you understand and figure out your cycle. It may help you conceive easier or faster.

Have you tried having sex?

Seriously, you're jumping the gun. Have women with irregular cycles conceived? Hell yes. Lots of women have irregular cycles. I've never been regular. I'll be regular for a few months or a year and then I'll go back to having a 6 week cycle, a 2 month cycle, a 3 week cycle, a 5 month (oops, has it been that long) cycle. I talked to my OB about it, and she said I just need to make sure I have a period every 3 months and gave me a prescription in case it goes that long again.

I've had 2 kids with no assistance from my OB. It took us about 7 months to conceive our youngest, but we were both really busy and not having sex as often as you would think given the fact that we wanted to get pregnant.

Give it some time. For the next few months, just have sex. You might be surprised! If after 6 months you aren't able to conceive, then ask your OB. An irregular period does not mean you have fertility issues. Just have some fun and try not to think about it :-)

I have an irregular cycle. We tried for a while then I went to see my OB/GYN who was a fertility (I hesitate to use the word) expert. He put me on clomid (fertility drug to help you ovulate) and serafin (sp?) (same as clomid just by a different company) and then back on clomid. He also put me on metformin (drug for insulin resistance). I was getting frustrated because none of my friends were having this issue and it seemed like every one of my friends and some family had babies without a issue (some one I know got pg after her husband had a vacectomy (sp?)! It was really hard. It took 3 1/2 years to have my first child. I have 3 now, all healthy and wonderful. So worth everything I went through

If you haven't been in a while, go get a check up and make sure everything else is in working order! You may also find out a cause for the irregular cycles and you might as well figure out whether it's a lot more relevant to fertility than you think. For example, if you're not ovulating, you're not going to get pregnant. If you're irregular because some hormones are off, you might get pregnant but it might be more difficult.

There is a lot you can do nutritionally for your cycles too, but I think you need a check-up and clearance to start trying to get pregnant first.

Good luck!

It depends on your age and how irregular your cycle is. If you are off by a few days every month that is considered normal and does not have to indicate any fertility issues. If you are only getting your period every few months... that is another story.
Also your age: if you are in your twenties most doctors will recommend trying for a year unless you have an obvious fertility issue. If you are 35 or older, you will want to see a doctor and think about assisted reproduction sooner than that.
If you have not been to the doctor in a while (as in more than a year) you should go and get an annual, including a pap and breast exam to make sure you are healthy to conceive. You can bring up your cycle irregularities with your doctor then.
If you are not due for your annual for a few months, I would say go ahead and give it a try without pressure. Just have sex regularly (every other day is typically advised) and see what happens.
Good luck.

Dont use Clomid!
Be careful. My son was born with cleft because I was prescribed with a drug similar with Clomid.
Don't worry. If it is the time, God will give you one.

Watch for and know, your ovulation symptoms. Despite an irregular cycle.
That is when conception is possible. When ovulating.
If you do not know your ovulation symptoms, look it up online.

That is what I did.
By KNOWING my body and ovulation symptoms and when it was coming on.
