If you got to the districts websites, they have to post the school report card, which includes test scores, all the info you might need, it also includes school dynamics, this will help.
Good luck

I thank everyone who responded to my question the information was extremely helpful. I will be making an appointment to see Dr. Gold. As far as the school situation in Merrillville, I would like to know are the schools with the higher test scores diverse. I have been told since I've come here that African Americans and their children are treated differently in towns such as Crown Point, Lowell, Schereville is this true?

Hi L.,
I think you will be very happy with Dr. Gold. As far as schools, all I can really say is that I have worked in the Crown Point schools, and cannot speak for the others, but I do not believe that there is a difference in how students are treated based on their race. I think that the CP schools are very good, and my daughter will be going there in a few years. Good luck to you! Please feel free to e-mail me if I can help with any other info!

Hi,
I'm A. and I have two boys in the C.P. school system. One is in a middle school, fifth grade and the other is in Kindy at Winfield school. To let you know of my experiences...if you need any kind of special help with a child that is out of the norm, it's a bit of a struggle. I had to fight tooth and nail to get an IEP for my son who is now doing beautifully. But to get to that point was a lot of hard work. So...if anyone needs advice about the C.P. schools I'd be more than happy to respond!
I will say this for diversity in Crown Point: I've lived here all my life, and I'm actually about to move to Lowell. Growing up, there were almost no black people, but there was a fairly good mix of Asians and Hispanics. Now, I'm seeing quite a bit more black people, which makes me happy! My daughter is multi-racial (black, white, and Native American). She's in kindergarten, and has been a bit picked on because of her tan skin. That's mainly older kids who won't let her be a Disney princess like Cinderella because those princesses are pale. She hasn't come across any severe discrimination among kids or adults. We're about to move to Lowell, which is also become more diverse. I say this: The communities won't become diverse until someone makes them diverse. I won't run from CP or Lowell if someone doesn't want my daughter there. I will stand up for her and fight for her if I have to, because she has as much right to live peacefully wherever we live. I've never witnessed a violent discrimination in CP. I've never heard of one. And, again, I see quite a few black people compared to when I was growing up. And they seem to get along just fine with the other residents.
Hi L.,
My name is D., I understand your concerns and I too moved her from Chicago 2 yrs ago. when my now 2nd grader came here he was in kindergarten and he said to my husband and I one day that, if he had white skin like the some of the other students than his teacher would like him and help him. She of course instead of analyzing her behavior became very defensive and called him a liar! This was at a Merrillville school...he still attends the same school and is growing up to be confident and proud of himself as a person and he loves his skin color... I feel that there are individuals who have issues but overall the schools here in Merrillville are diverse, educationally sound, with some of the best teachers in the area. I take my 4 and 7 yr old to recreational activities in Crown Point and the people are nice, but when I asked a group of the mothers about CP as a place to live and about the school system not 1 of the 5 mothers had anything favorable to say regarding the community or the school system, they seem to feel my children would have a negative experience in CP...go figure! L., I believe in being honest, my sons are not genni pigs they won't be used as experiments...(!?) I am still considering sending the children to charter or private schools only because Merrillville schools are getting over crowded. email me L. at ____@____.com
