My husband has the same trouble and carries an "obis" or "obus" form with him everywhere. It doesn't totally solve the problem but it helps. it's a form that he puts behind him. I'll be interested to see if others have better ideas.
This isn't a typical Mamapedia question but I really need help from others to brainstorm (we've had no success ourselves)...
My husband is disabled with such bad back pain that he can not attend church anymore; the pews are just much too unbearable. Our church has agreed to rearrange the pews so we can bring in our own seat for him (they don't care how big or ugly it is).
A slightly reclined position is best for my husband because it relieves the pressure on his spine (just as much as one could recline a car seat and still drive). However, a recliner in church wouldn't work because it would block the people in pews in front and behind us. What we really need is something not too huge that is cushioned and reclines but does NOT require the feet to go up also. (All the small recliners we found make the feet pop as well and the other kind of recliners are just too huge).
I sure would appreciate any suggestions if anyone can think of something for us. My husband would really like to attend church, and our two small children would really benefit from having Daddy in church too.
Thanks,
A.

Can you find a recliner that is an appropriate size for your church and remove the foot part that pops ups? (I hope you understand what I meant!!) That way, he has the comfort of a recliner that works for other people attending services, too.
What a wonderful church you belong to! I hope your husband is able to return to services soon. Good luck!
How about an office chair that reclines? There are some VERY comfortable models out there!
Go to Staples, Office Max or whatever office supply store in your area to test them out.
I am so glad your church is willing to accomodate your husbands needs! I hope you find something that he is comfortable using.
Good luck!
When my boyfriend had pnuemonia the only comfortable position for him to sleep in was sitting, slightly reclined. His mom brought over her chair from IKEA. It is pretty light weight, not bulky and comes in a variety of colors (just in case you want something simple...our is a blonde wood, with a white padding). Its called the POANG I believe. At first I thought it was uncomfortable but I realized I just needed a little more neck support and placed a small pillow (my babies crib pillow she never used) behind me and I was in heaven. I used it a lot when I was pregnant and had heart burn in the middle of the night. They withstand a ton of weight too (in the store they have a model with a pressure weight to demonstrate that the wood will hold up). This chair has no foot rest. I hope this helps! Good Luck!
Added: From the picture on their website you can't tell it reclines, but if you go there and test one out you will find your weight reclines it. Also I guess they have a rocking chair version, which we don't have, the regular chair reclines fine. =) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S69825283
Hi A.,
We have an elderly couple in our church that keep their chairs in the church as well. One has a bad back and RA and the other has neuropathy in her feet. They both have "beach" chairs. They are different in style but are exactly what they need. Most beach stores are going to carry an assortment of chairs with different positions. Maybe shop online to get an idea then go out and try a few.

Have you thought about a reclining glilder rocker? The one we have locks into the reclined position you choose, it will not rock when reclined. We used to have one that did rock when reclined so maybe they still make those too. No foot rest unless you bought the ottoman. We bought them at Babies R Us.
Hi A.
Have you checked office/desk chairs? I am wondering if there are any that might have the features he needs. I know it is often more comfortable to also have your feet up a little, so maybe he could pair it with a footstool. That would still allow him to have his feet supported and somewhat out in front of him without it being as far out as a recliner.
I will keep thinking on this one (and praying :) ), but I don't have any other ideas right now.

Has he ever sat in a one of those chairs that I think are called zero recline. They are used outdoors, kind of a mesh type material. Seems like the church would be able to find a spot somewhere for one of these if it is comfortable for him. Just a thought
I don't understand why you feel to ask what you should do, when your church has already said that they would accommodate your need. What more do you need to ask?
