College Graduation Gift

I need some creativity! I have a very dear friend who is graduating from college with her Master's degree. She's married and has a career, so she doesn't really need anything, but I would still like to get her something. I'm on a budget, but I don't want to do the typical gift card thing. If anyone out there has any ideas, please share them. My creative juices just aren't flowing. Thanks!

Greetings A.:

Get her a gift card to get a massage or create "girlfriend time" coupons where you give her a coupon for say 6 months or lunch or coffee or dinner on you and you get to spend some girlfriend time with her. I love when my girlfirends just wanna love on me and spend time, even if it's just for lunch once day out of a month.

Love and blessings,
N.

Give something with more sentimental value than monetary. You might try giving something like an engraved business card holder for her desk or portfolio with her initials engraved on it. "Things Remembered" has some nice options, and you can shop online. If she is a school teacher, you can give her a gift certificate to a teacher's supply store, or something relevant to her career. And while I realize that gift certificates may seem impersonal, you could give her a gift certificate to a store where she could indulge her hobbies, such as a bookstore, with a note that indicates she can use this now that she will once again have some free time now that she is out of school. Good luck!

Try edible arrangements on Keller Parkway, they deliver the tastiest fruit arrangements, the ones dipped in chocolate are the best. We give them all the time and everyone loves them. You can order on their website, ediblearrangements.com.

Maybe a gift certificate to a framing shop? Framing a diploma can be expensive (~$150 or more for a decent frame) but every graduate wants to display their accomplishment. Since the whole cost is probably out of your budget, a gift certificate to help defray that expense would probably be welcomed.

My sister in law is graduating from law school this weekend. I am going to get her a cosmetic bag (it can be as pricey (designer or personalized)) or reasonable as you like (even something you decorate yourself), and fill it with things I know she will need at some point in her new job, but won't have. Things such as Shout wipes, a small brush, lip gloss, safety pins, toothbrush, gum, clear nail polish, travel hair spray, etc. The items you choose for the bag can also determine the amount spent. I am an attorney, so these are things that I regularly find myself wishing I had at the last minute on my way into a meeting.

Go to a local pawn shop and inquire about their necklaces. If your friend is a Christian perhaps a cross necklace. Or a nice picture frame from Marshall's or Tuesday Morning or Big Lots...

Maybe get her a Lampe Berger- some of them can be pricy but others not. OR, take her out for lunch and a mani pedi together. Sometimes making memeories is better than any gift.

It depends on what she studied. My mom got her masters in Biology and I loved that my aunt got her a lab coat with her name, but M.A. I thought it was really creative. I am also an English teacher and would love to get things that had to do with my field and not so much a gift certificate to a restaurant.

Scrapbook. A mini scrapbook would be good. If you have pictures of you two or you could ask her husband for some pics that she loves (or maybe hasn't had a chance to develope).
You dont have to buy the expensive packs of scrap book paper. You can use wrapping paper. There are tons of ideas and great how-to tips, if you are interested, at www.scrapbookmemoriestv.com

Good morning!

I would find it a little helpful if I knew what her Masters was in. How long have you been friends? ( I ask this bec/ you might be able to throw something in the gift that brings you back to a fond memory of 'way back when' to personalize it further.)
Also is she the practical type or the sentimental type?
I know, a lot of questions, but it's information that helps a little more. :)

Have a great day!

My little sister got her masters several years ago and I offered to have her diploma framed at Michaels. They did a beautiful job of moisture sealing it and putting a hanger on it. Years later, she still has it on the wall and is very proud to get to see her accomplishment displayed. There are several options for doing this...Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Creative Memories, if you want to have it moisture sealed and done professionally. If she just wants it framed, you can do it yourself for much less. Congrats to your friend.

Depending on your budget, there are a lot of "... of the month" clubs out there. You pay, and the person receives whatever it is every month - Harry & David do fruit of the month (or every three months, etc) different fruit each time. I believe there are also flowers, candy, etc. It's a gift you give for a whole year, and the prices aren't bad. Good luck!

My sister is graduating from law school next week. She always appreciates the keep sakes. Maybe a nice piece of jewelry that she can have forever and always remember her special day. Or a nice decantor to put wine in that your friend will alway see sitting out and remember you by. James Avery always has nice things that aren't too pricey. Also you should try looking on ebay. They have great bargains on jewlry.
Good Luck, L.

Hi A.,

I love the framing idea, but it can be pricey.

My husband just graduated last weekend with his MBA. So he's married, with a career and just completed this milestone.

He received money, Best Buy gift card and homemade things from the kids. I bought him the video of the ceremony for him to show our family who was not in attendance. (you need to contact the university to see if that's available) He attended on-line, so graduation on the actual campus was a big deal...he bought lots of things at the book store. (A gift card to there for "Alumni" merchandise?)

My husband appreciated any acknowlegement of his accomplishment. It is a huge deal with a marriage, kids (if any), and a job. She has most likely been studying quite a bit away from the family, so a gift card to a night out may be nice, too.

Just knowing that you care enough to do something to acknowlege it is great, I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

This was rambling, but I hope it helps in some way.

You should try shopping at Things Remembered. They have a lot of gifts you can personalize that I am sure your friend could use with her job. I know they have business card holders, pens, clocks, etc. I am sure you could find a great gift for under $50.

It is a special time in her life. I once got a graduating Masters' degree student a watch. It was nice, but not too expensive. By the way--I know you must be looking forward to the summer. I taught HS English for 3 years several years ago and remember all the paper grading that goes with it! I always wondered why English teachers didn't get a sign on bonus for that! :) The student I'm speaking about is one of the first kids I taught. She always kept in touch w/me and still does on occasion. Anyway, I hope you find something w/in your means. Good luck!

One gift that I received when I got my Master's degree was a business card holder for my purse. My friend got it from Things Remembered and had my initials engraved on it. I also bought one for a friend getting her Master's...got one from Brighton for about $25. I think its a nice gift...makes you feel kind of professional after all that hard work and makes it easy to find business cards without having to dig in your wallet or rummage through your handbag!

Hi A.,

What about a nice pen with the rubber gripper or ornate. Look at Tuesday Morning or a department store. Prices vary widely. A new professional handbag or a fun new purse.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

You could give her a gift basket with some of her favorite snack foods, a book, 1 or more small gift cards (if she likes coffee, a $5 starbucks gift card and coffee themed food or chocolate). Craft stores and Wal-Mart have very inexpensive baskets or bowls you can use. You can purchase a roll of cellophane at a craft store.

Hi A.! I sell Steel My Heart. You can personalize an $8 magnet all the way up to a $150 titanium ring. With key tags, thermoses, door plates and bunches of other stuff - it would be hard to not find something great to get her. One idea is a wrist hugger. She could wear it daily, but on the inside you can add a secret message that only she knows is there. For an adult these start at around $30. These products are awesome and affordable. Where else can you get something so creatively personalized?! I love it! Let me know if I can help! You can get my contact info from my website. http://J..yoursmh.com

When my BFF graduated from college last year, I prepaid her for 8 meals at one of the grab and go home-cooked dinner places. I sent her a card and told her what I had done and that I felt like she deserved a break for all she had accomplished. She LOVED it, as she is a single mom to a very active child!

With money being an issue, you could give her a card and tell her that once a week or once a month you will cook a meal and bring it to her.
