Clomid Experiences

Hi All, I have recently been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS. We have been trying to get pregnant for about 2 years now, or not trying not to I guess I would say. I just went to a fertility Dr. today, and he said the next step is Clomid. I've heard horror stories about the mood shifts and weight gain associated with Clomid. I'm already stressed as it is, I'm just wondering what to expect with taking this medicine. I'm not too worried about multiples, at this point I wouldn't mind having twins, even though the Dr. said only 6% of people who take Clomid have multiples.

Any experience you've had with Clomid would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty sure we're going to go ahead with it, I just want to know what to REALLY expect, not some medical mumbo jumbo! Thanks ladies.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your helpful responses. Looks like more times than not the end result is pregnancy and not too bad in the side effects department. I do have some weight to lose, and may try to get some of it off before going ahead with the Clomid. I don't think my Dr. is going to prescribe the Metformin, although he did give me some information on it. I did an insulin fast test and it came back normal, so he thought Metformin wouldn't be necessary or helpful for me. I'm glad to finally know why I've never had regular periods though, and hopefully keep them in check from now on, even though it's been fabulous so far to not have to deal with it every month! I do not usually have bad PMS if I do have a period, so maybe that is a good sign for the Clomid side effects. Thanks again for all your encouraging responses, I'm staying positive that this will work for us, and before long we'll have a bun in the oven!

Hi! My husband and I have been trying for baby no 1 for a year now. I just started my first month of clomid. It's not too bad. I had some moodyness but it only lasted about a day or so, the thing I don't like most about it is the hot flashes! They can be brutal but at least they don't last long!
I say try it, it's not so bad and if the end result is a bun in the oven, then bring on the hot flashes! I can always stand in front of the freezer!! :)

I should find out at the end of this week if we had any success, fingers crossed!

Good luck to you!

Hello,

I also used Clomid due to fertility issues. I didn't notice any side effects. Clomid by itself didn't work for us. But, they added Folistem and Clomid together and I'm now the proud Mother of 2 1/2 year old triplets. Best of luck to You as I know how hard fertility issues can be. Just continue to stay positive and believe that it will happen!

I was on it for three months because we were having trouble concieving. Everyone is different but I had no problems whatsoever. No mood swings or weight gain and like I said, it only took three months for us to get pregnant. I don't remember any kind of side effects by it.

Hi A.-
I did 3 cycles of Clomid and didn't have any problems at all, but I think it's different with everybody. A friend of mine had some of the issues you discussed, but Clomid is pretty mild compared with some of the stronger fertility drugs. I get the impression that if you normally have problems with PMS, hormonal stuff, etc, you can probably expect some side effects more than like me, who has been blessed with very little problems like that (of course we never did get pregnant, so maybe that means something? We do have a wonderful 2 y/o that we adopted, so it was a blessing in disguise for us!). I'd just give it a shot - if it's too bad, you can go off it and try something else. The end goal is the important thing, right? Best of luck!

I was very nervous to take Clomid as well because, just as you have, I had heard horror stories and even worked with a woman who had the worst mood swings I had ever seen someone have. I figured I would at least try it for a month or two because we really wanted another baby so our son would have a brother/sister. I would have to say that I am one of the lucky ones because I took one month of Clomid (a year ago this month) and got pregnant the first month taking it. I had no mood swings or side effects at all. The only issue I had was just the emotional roller coaster of wondering "is this going to work?"..."what if it doesn't?"...."can I keep doing this?".... I just didn't know if I could go through the all the steps involved if it didn't work the first go around. We now have a very healthy almost 3 month old baby boy and I would recommend Clomid to anyone! Good luck!!

I too have PCOS and we tried for 2 years before conceiving. I took metformin for a year and still with no cycles they decided to start me on clomid. I took it for four cycles before getting pregnant. The last month of it the specialist doubled the dose and extended it by two days which meant 100 mg for seven days. With ultrasounds she monitored follicle growth and triggered ovulation. I had one good follicle even with all of those drugs but it only took one! Needless to say in my experience I was full of hormones that my body was not used to. I don't know if it was harder on me or my husband!!! I would have times when it felt like an out of body experience because I knew that I was overreacting but couldn't stop it. I also experienced weight gain of about 10 lbs.
So even though everyone is different be prepared for the worst because you are putting large amounts of hormones into your body. Another thought is talking to your doctor about metformin before clomid. With PCOS there are more factors than just not getting pregnant. If you don't treat the insulin resistance the clomid may never work. Best of luck and hang in there. It gets very frustrating at times but when God blesses you with a child it makes it all worth it.

I did a total of 9 cycles with clomid, the first 5 and then got pregnant with a daughter and then 2 years later tried again but it didn't work. I did not have mood swings or weight gain with mine. I know that if you are stressed about it than it probably will not work. My advice is to try it if you gain weight or have mood swings than you can stop.

A., I too was diagnoised with PCOS, and went on clomid. I used clomid for 6 months and never got pregnant, just had awful heavy periods. I then went to a fertility specialist on my last round of clomid, and the sonogram showed that the clomid was causing my cyst to grow larger and that was keeping me from getting pregnant. After explaining this to people, everyone kept saying, "wow, I could have told you that!" The 7th month, I did not do any medication. The 8th month, I starting taking shots, can't remember what they were. I think we did the shots for a month, and because we were older, the doctor suggested an IUI. I only had 2 eggs...I ended up with twins. As far as the mood swings and weight gain from the clomid, I did not experience any of that or anything else horrible.

I took clomid for 5 months and my little guy is now 3 weeks old. He is our 1st child!!. I did not have any side effects, I also was real laid back about the whole thing because I did not want to stress too much over anything, because I know that can have a negative effect on getting pregnant. Just take it one month at a time and if it bothers you stop taking it. Good Luck.

Hi A.,

I took Clomid to get pregnant with both of my children and had a great experience both times. I got pregnant the first month with my daughter and the second month with my son while taking it. This was after a year or so of trying on our own both times.

I had no side effects whatsoever. I'm sure it is different for everyone, but it worked great for me.

Good luck to you.

I did NOT like clomid one bit--nor did it work for me. I lost 20 lbs and got pregnant quickly thereafter. I didn't have PCOS, just clogged tubes... But, either way--the weighloss is what did it for me.
Yes, it causes mood swings and HOT flashes! I felt terrible on it, and without success--for WHAT?!?! Ask if there is another route (like foramin (sp?)) to reduce your sugars.

I have PCOS,as well.I miscarried twice when I was younger, found a Womans care clinic and after having a uterin biopsy was put on Clomid. The answer back then for miscarriages was 'we dont know what causes them.something must have been wrong with the baby.' That was a crock of s*** in my mind.Anyway I was unable to continue the Clomid or the clinic at the time, but we continued to try to get pregnant.13 yrs and 2 more miscarriages later I finally found a great clinic that could put some things in perspective for me.
I dont know how much your Dr explained to you,but I hope this helps....
PCOS is caused by an imbalance of insulin in your ovaries.Estrogen contains insulin. The estrogen is too high and doesnt allow the proper cycling of hormones,so a woman can have a 'normal' cycle and ovulate for the month.(for me this meant:progesterone drops, causing a miscarriage.VIOLA!)
The new concensus for practioners is to use glucophage or metformin,a diabetic med,to balance out the insulin in the ovaries.I was put on this for a year, then had ONE round of clomid and was pregnant.I continued the metformin until I was thru the first trimester. We have a healthy 19mo old lil girl.
I would think that if someone is taking clomid for an extended period,6 mos or more, then yeah,I would imagine some mood shifting or weight gain. It causes hormones to surge. The only thing I experienced was a sharp pain when I ovulated;the pollyp bursting and releasing the egg. It was very sharp and hurt. But I never experienced anything else with it.
Please ask your Dr about using metformin/glucophage.You may not need to take clomid. And dont forget,hun...you dont have to do something simply because a Dr says so.He works for you.
Good luck and Happy conceiving!

I was on Clomid for one month and after that month I told my husband that it wasn't worth it and that I was not going to continue to take it. I found out I was pregnant the next month. I don't know if it was the clomid or my body finally working. The mood swings and headaches were bad but I did not gain weight. I had a sonogram at 6 1/2 weeks to make sure the pregnancy looked good and we found out we were having twins. My great grandmother (twin boys)and my grandmother (twin girls) on my mom's side had twins so twins run in my family. I don't know if it was the clomid or the family history but I now have fraternal twin boys and now that it's behind me I can say that I would go through it again! Good Luck!

Hello,

I have some fertility issues and my doctor prescribes me Clomid too. After the first month I was pregnant, and I have "one" beautiful son. I didn't feel any mood changes, but I put on few pounds... which wasn't a big deal because I was pregnant.
The second time, same story, I was pregnant after the first month, unfortunately the ending was different (I had a miscarriage due to an infection non related to Clomid).
Usually, you only take Clomid for a couple months, 6 max, because it should work during that period of time, if not you have to go to the next step and do all the tests before an IVF.
I hope it would work well for you.

I wish you the best! I had to use Clomid due to multiple miscarriages, long story short, I have two beautiful, healthy children that I feel so fortunate to have been blessed with. I think that Clomid has very individual effects, I personally did not suffer any ill effects. But I do have a friend that had terrible mood swings while taking it. I don't typically suffer ill effects from medication, so I may just be that lucky. ;-) I do know a couple of other ladies who have taken it without side effects, so maybe she was one of the unfortunate few.
I wish you only the best! Good luck.
In good health, J.

My mom (and I) both also have PCOS. My mom conceived me on her first round of clomid, and then my sister a year or so later on her first round.

I'm surprised you needed to see a fertility doctor to even try clomid, my regular gyn prescribed me clomid after I had been trying about 6 months when it was clear I wasn't ovulating (I was charting my cycles and taking ovulation predictor tests.) I decided to wait until this summer to try it, because she wanted me to come in for bloodwork every cycle to see if I ovulated and I didn't have time to deal with that, and while we were trying but not really expecting it to happen without an egg, I managed to get pregnant on the 80th day of my cycle. I would have definitely tried clomid this summer though. It has been very successful with women with PCOS, but it might take a few cycles.

Some women with PCOS have had good luck with vitex, and some with metformin, while others it doesn't work at all. Just because you have PCOS does not ALWAYS mean your insulin levels are messed up.

I highly recommend the website (and message boards) www.soulcysters.com and www.soulcysters.net for PCOS info and articles, etc.

Good luck!

I tried clomid for several months with no luck I had a terrible experience I had mood swings, hot flashes...etc. Needless to say I couldn't take it anymore and I got off of it. I did end up having my beautiful son years later with out any medications. I think it's a matter of trial and error just like anything. I do however wish you luck.

Ok, my Clomid twins are 17 now, so I don't remember too much. I don't remember having any mood swings, just got a little tired of taking my temp every morning and having to chart everything. I took Clomid for 7 months before I got pregnant, It was worth it. At 14 weeks pregnant the Dr had to remove my right tube and ovalry because they were twisted, he removed my appendix while he was there because he didn't like the looks of it and did not want to do surgery on me again while I was pregnant. I had my twins at 28 weeks, they are very healthy. The Dr. warned me that "everything" worked then and I should use birth control. I have a son that is 15 months younger than the twins.
