Hi ya Mamas!
I recently found out that I have PCOS. I am currently trying to lose weight, and my Dr. has started me on Metformin and given me a Rx. for Clomid, but when I filled it it was almost $50!!! I was a bit shocked! (usually our co-pay is $10, but I guess this med is not covered.

OK, so my questions is has anyone else recently been down this road and what was it like? (how long sis the clomid take to start working? and how did you react to the Metformin?)

We have 3 cycles worth of Clomid before my OB won't help us any more and we have to see a specialist (which is not covered by insurance).

Oh, BTW, we have been trying for a WHILE! :-) and we are doing everything that is usually recommended ;-)

thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

I don't have PCOS but I did take clomid. I was put on it by a reproductive endorinologist from Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences. I was only on it for a month because it actually made my uterine lining thinner which made implantation impossible. So it didn't work for me.

I also have PCOS and conceived my first child with metformin and clomid. I was on 1000mg of metformin (which causes a lot of people many stomach problems - apparently there's a "new" drug out there that is just as good as metformin, but better side effects - Glumetza). Clomid you have to be careful with, it's not good to take it for more than 6 mos., so it's good your Dr. will only do 3.

You might consider taking the metformin w/out the clomid for a couple mos. It's possible that will be enough..

I would call around for prices on clomid. I know Costco generally has good prices and from what I understand, you don't have to be a member.

What worked for me is getting the fertility test strips (I bought them on ebay). It was more accurate that temperature charting.

I conceived for the first time after two tries (but this resulted in a miscarriage) and the second time after one try (resulting in our daughter).

There is lots of information out there.... especially on the internet. soulcysters.com

One thing you may want to research and discuss with your dr. is whether or not to continue the metformin once you conceive. Everyone has different opinions on that.

Good luck!

T.,
This reply may be a little late (I hope!). I too have PCOS and was on metformin for 10 months to regulate my periods (although I am not insulin resistant) but never ovulated until the 11th month when I took clomid and conceived. I payed out of pocket for the clomid but I don't remember how much it was. My doctor had said if it didn't work after 3 trys then she would refer me to fertility. Also, they had me continue on the metformin until the end of the first trimester. When I stop breastfeeding I will start taking it again. I hope it works for you!

You need to go buy the book - The Insulin Resistant Diet. I had a friend with PCOS lose more than 60lbs with the diet and got pg. However, having PCOS does lower your chances of getting pg naturally. You may need to go see an RE (reproductive endocrinologist) to help with your second child.

Fred Meyers had Clomid for $10.00 as long as you do not run it through insurance. We have been trying for 3 years and no luck so wish I had some more advice for you but I need my own . I was on the clomid just recently and that is where I got it for that price. Good luck

The metformin is to control your bloodsugar. You may experence some cramping and more than usual bowelmovements while your body adjusts to it.
I dont know anything about Clomid, but I think it is supposed to wrok pretty quickly.
Best of Luck!!!

Hi it has worked for us twice. Well both times I ended up getting pregnant with just Clomid. I also have PCOS and both times got preggers on the second round at 100 after trying for almost three years, clomid was a true blessing. Also it was around $50 last time I was on Clomid but this past time Target gave me a generic, and it worked and was about $17. I am currently 7 weeks pregnant and as hard as Clomid was for me emotionally it has been really worth it. Let me know if you have more questions.

I do not have PCOS - but was prescribed Clomid after not being able to get pg (doing all the usual charting and other tricks for nearly two years.) I was also told to try Clomid for three cycles, if didn't work - then come back for an increased dose. And if the increased dose didn't work after three more cycles - the next step was a hysterosalpiniogram (sp?) I was surprised when we got pg with the first round of Clomid. Good luck!!

I also have PCOS. I was diagnosed with it and hypothyroid disease while I was trying to get pregnant 4 years ago. I was on Metformin for about 5 months with no period. I was given something to bring on a period (I can't remember the name of the drug), then a cycle of Clomid to conceive. It worked on the first cycle and we now have a 3 1/2 year old daughter. I gradually worked up from 500 mg to 1500 mg of Metformin and once I got up to the higher dose, I had a lot of diarrhea and nausea. Also, food smelled wierd and I lost my appetite. Clomid was effective, but I did have some serious hormone rage during those 5 days. I don't recall Clomid being very expensive, but I did only get one cycle's worth. After my daughter's birth I went back on birth control pills but I went off 4 months ago to conceive #2. I haven't had a period since Decemeber so I just went to the doctor last week. Now, I'm on Metformin again in an attempt to get my period back. If I don't have a period in the next 3 months, I have to have a uterine ultrasound. No nausea or diarrhea, but I am still on the lowest dose. I hope everything goes well. Good luck!

I too have PCOS, and I did Clomid three times and it didn't work. Then I tried Metformin, and all of a sudden my periods were regular--for the first time in my life! I got pregnant after three months on just the Met. Stayed on it for the first trimester. I was fine on Met, as was baby. I did develop gestational diabetes, which is par for the course with PCOS. Good luck!

Hi T., I went down that road with 3 losses and no reasons for our infertility. I was on Metformin diagnosed with PCOS for years. The Clomid is expensiVE but it works as soon as you start, meaning when you are taking it it is maturing your eggs. just track everything!! your symptoms of ovulation take the ovulation tests so you know exactly when to have sex. The Metformin makes your bowels work overtime! I dont remember anything else being bothersome, the good news is i lost 20lb and everything is normal no more PCOS I did not succeed with the clomid, but after that they did a procedure where they shot die thru my tubes to look at everything and wola. I have heard that it gets everything squeky clean and ALOT of woman concieve after it is performed. GOOD LUCK
