My doctor has just put me on metformin as the next step to help me get pregnant. He said that if after 3 months I haven't concieved the next step will be Clomid. I am wanting to find out how this has worked for others who have taken the same things for infertility and also I am looking for what the chance is for multiples on clomid. Thanks in advance for you help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your quick responses. My husband and I do feel very blessed to have our son and are in agreement that we would be happy if we have no more children. We also have decided that Clomid will be our last step in trying to get pregnant as we don't have the money to put out for expensive fertility treatments and we don't want to put my body through all the hormonal craziness. If Clomid doesn't work we are going to try to adopt through the foster system. Thanks again for the responses, we'll see what the next few months bring.

Hi B.,

Looks like you have quite a few answers already, but I thought I'd share my bit of experience with you as well. 3&1/2 years ago, I took myself off the pill. After that, no period. I didn't worry yet because everyone told me it takes time. So, I kept waiting and waiting. A year and a half ago I went to my gyno who prescribed Clomid. I took it like I thought I was supposed to, but nothing happened. I was a bit disappointed, but I kept on hoping anyway.

Last May, I finally decided to see a fertility specialist. He prescribed Clomid again (which I was a bit reluctant to take because it hadn't worked before) along with HCG injections. By June 3rd, I started my first period in 3 years. I had one more period on July 1st and, after another cycle of injections and Clomid, I became pregnant by the end of the month! I'm now 26 weeks along and ready for our first child to be born in April.

Multiples run in both my family as well as my husband's, so this was definitely a concern in conjunction with the Clomid. So, we had a 7 week ultrasound to check how many babies we had and there was only one. I'm not sure what the multiple rates are with Clomid, but I can assure you that after taking it I only have one child on the way. Good luck to you and I hope you find the assistance you need!

B.,

We had problems conceiving naturally for years...my OB recommended Clomid to help jump start my system. I was told that it takes 5-6 cyles of Clomid to help (on average). I took one round...we have twin boys who are now 2.5 yrs!!!

The timing of getting pregnant was so close to my starting the Clomid that the doctor couldn't say for sure if that was the deciding factor of our pregnancy. I think it helped.

Take care of yourself and follow your instructions. May God bless your family.

Hi, B.--

I did Clomid and it was not a good fit for me. For many women, it works well, but a percentage of us experience side effects with huge mood swings and overall crankiness. One of my friends said it gave her migraines, but she had those fairly frequently with any hormone treatment. I would do some research and inquire about the side effects online and with your doctor. It is a fairly easy and inexpensive fertility treatment. I ended up doing injectibles one time only and it did the trick without the nasty side effects. You may do just fine on Clomid.

I wish you much success in this journey!

I have taken Clomid (successfully) and have multiples running in the family (my grandmother had 2 sets of twins). I have 2 children, both single birth. I think the chance of multiples on clomid is lower than other fertility options. I will admit it made me very PMS like when I took it, so just a warning, it runs the hormones pretty hard. Good luck!

Hi B.. My husband and I had a hard time getting pregnant because of my PCOS. My doctor put me on Clomid along with another medication that comes with it(i can't think of the name at this time) as well as being on metformin. I took the medications for 5 months and stoped taking it. (I was tired of scheduled intercourse, not having results and just my body was tired) Well the next month I found out we were pregnant! We have 1 son with that pregnancy. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi I was on Clomid and did not concieve but I wanted to pass on another aspect of the experience just so you could be prepared. Clomid made me extrermely emotional - crying, angry etc. I almost broke up with my partner during that time. They had me on a test double strength dose so it was probably worse than usual but just be warned. I think if I had realized why I was so emotional I would have been able to handle it better.

Good Luck!

My Dr. offered to put me on Clomid after trying to get pregnant for a year. I did research online and found that the risk of multiples was a bit too much for me so I took some natural herbs instead and I am now 4 months pregnant with ONE baby. I already have 3 year old twins that were conceived after 8 months of trying with no drugs so I was really trying to avoid another multiple pregnancy. I went to GNC and got some Vitex, which is an herb called chaste tree berry. There are zero side effects so I figured why not. I got pregnant a month later. Could be a coincidence, but I'd say it's worth a shot. On the other hand, twins are super fun so that's not the worst thing that could happen. Good luck!

This is the same thing that my doctor did a couple of years ago, I didn't actually get pregnant until we started Clomid. I am surprized though because my understanding was no more metformin (this is new in the past year). Now they are supposed to just be going to Clomid. Any way your chances for multilples is 10percent for twins and below 1 percent for more then that. Hope this is good news. I am also trying to get prego, and they went straight to the clomid but I am nervous without the metformin

I took Clomid, in tandem with an HCG shot, and got pregnant immediately. Just one beautiful boy. I'm not sure about the odds but for me it was just the thing. Good luck...

Clomid increases your chances of multiples by about 7-10% I used it to get pregnant my first time. I had some of the side-effects, but not too bad. My neighbor used Clomid for her second pregnancy and DID conceive twins. They are healthy and fabulous.

For my second pregnancy, I had to go even further than Clomid and used an injectable medication. Luckily, we only conceived one as well.

It can be a tricky decision. All the best!

B.,

Metformin is used, in people who are having problems conceiving, to reduce the amount of glucose in your blood. This decision should only be made if the patient is displaying the symptoms of PCOS with insulin resistance. I am assuming that you had a fasting glucose test and it came back to show that you are insulin resistant. If not, please go to a doctor who is familiary with PCOS and metabolic syndrome. They go hand in hand, and are long term health care concerns.

It took me a year on metformin to conceive. Of course, I wasn't really trying to get pregnant, I was trying to make sure that my body was functioning normally.

I think that if you have PCOS, you should educate yourself about it and the other issues that can come with it, like insuin resistance and possibly metabolic syndrome. Education is power, don't let anybody convince you to take something without totally getting the whole picture.

Good luck

Hello B.,

It looks like a you already have some great answers to your question, BUT - I'll give you my story anyway.

After 8 years of trying naturally my doctor put me on clomid - we did 6-8 rounds of it with zero success and a year wasted with severe behavioral changes - I did not do well mentally or physically on clomid.

After a year+ of clomid we went onto IVF (6 attempts) with a singleton success on round #2.

If you haven't done scheduled intercourse for 6 months - I'd do that before clomid.

Lastly - I would take a good look at how the roller coaster of infertility is effecting your relationship with your husband and your child - as it can tear a family apart or bring you closer. You may want to think about being content with one child. It took a heart surgery and my doctors telling me "NO more!" for me to finally be truly content with a single child.

Positively,
M.

Hi B.:

After nine years of trying both naturally and using glucofage (a diabetic medication that is also used for infertility) my doctor finally put me on Chlomid. As multiples run on both sides of our family I asked my doctor about the increase chance of having multiples and he told me that all Chlomid really does is boost your system so that you will ovulate. It has a progesterine base which is what happens when you ovulate. He told me that when individuals get pregnant with multiples on Clomid it is because they would have anyway even if they were not taking the drug. After 4 trys we successfully had a son. I have taken it again and my doctor's here have said the same thing as my original doctor did but was not successful. Hope this helps.

That was the route we took... :) I got pregnant the second month with clomid, it resulted in a miscarriage. I next got pregnant the first time we tried, resulting in our 2 year old daughter! The chance for multiples is pretty low... Good luck!

Hi! As with you, I am using clomid hoping to concieve. My doctor has told me that the probability of have twins is good but not anything else like triplets, etc. You will have to go in once a month after using the clomid to have your liver looked at, which can add up your cost, so you need to be prepared for that! I wish you luck as I have been trying without luck so we are about to move to the next step. :(
