Just curious on what other moms think of claritin or zyrtec for a child. My daughter will be 3 next month and we are trying to figure out what works best on her. Her allergies always turn into an ear or sinus infection. Does claritin make anyones kids sleepy? She has been taking it the last two days and has seemed more whiny and tired, it may be that she is still getting over her infection or not feeling good. Her allergies start with the puffy eyes and then turn into watery eyes. When it gets bad it gets a runny nose and cough like postnasal drip. I am just not sure what helps best, does anyone think I should take her to an allergy specialist if it is only seasonal or just try keeping her on over the counter meds for now.
I have a 3 1/2 year old and zyrtec works really well for her. She uses a 1 1/2 tsp dose as per her pediatrician.
Take her to a specialist and work very closely with him/her to find out what is best for your child. Medications and kids can be a become a very tricky and sticky situation. Good Luck.
Claritin works great for my 7 year old and my 11 year old and forme! I tried the zyrtec and it made me SOOOOOOOOOOO tired as well as depressed. I don't reccomend it. If you ask your doctor watch out for singuliar. I understand it is no longer recommended for long term use due to complications.
I give my son the liquid claritin only when he really needs it. He does not have any problems using claritin, no drowsiness, etc.

Zyrtec has worked better for our family. Claritin can give us dry mouth, but Zyrtec doesn't My son had terrible post nasal drip and now it is better.

I gave my daughter claritin when I first found out she had allergies. It would help some of the symptoms but not all of them. I switched to Zyrtec at the beginning of the year and it helped tremendously at first. Sh is now 4 and taking the 6 year old dose and it's not helping. I'm taking her to an allergy specialist in a few weeks.
My 5 year old son had better luck with the Zyrtec than with the Claritan. The Claritan did make him sleepy the first couple days which helped us get him to sleep, but it seemed to wear off by mid-morning and then he'd be miserable again.
Zyrtec has worked well for our son. He frequently is very nasal and then has a lot of sneezing. The Zyrtec helps out with the his nose and doesn't tire him out. At night, I give Benadryl if he is nasal before bed. We haven't gone the route of an allergist at this point. Our pediatrician has told us we have so many options to try before we put my son through the allergists testing etc.
We tried both and both would not let my son sleep. He was so wired from them and he bounced off the wall. We're sticking to Benadryl at night and once during the day.
i've given my daughter claritin but it's a once a day pill so i give it to her before bed and i have no problem she feels fine all day when it gets close to time to take it again she gets a little runny but it is workable. good luck
My 3.5 year old has been on singulair (chewable) and the allergist wants him put on claritin (liquid) as well. He is always sick either with a cold, cough, both, or a sinus infection. I've never had any problems with either of these so to answer your question, I think claritin is fine. He was on zyrtec but no longer takes it...allergist decided on singular instead. Good luck!
