HELP!!! Cold or Allergies?

My son has the same problem and he was diagnosed with asthma and allergies. The doctor put him on singular once a day for the allergies and it has been really effective. Every now and again he will get a runny nose that doesn't seem to get better and I will give him 1/4 of a tsp of over the counter allergy medicine. The doctor also prescribed him d-allergen which is $20 for a very small bottle. The pharmiscist told me d-allergen is just like robitussin so that's what I give him. Even though the FDA has come out and said you shouldn't give children under 6 over the counter medicine, I give him small doses and it really helps. I also noticed in the store that zyrtec has come out with an allergy medicine designed for children under 6 but I have not tried it. I hope this helps.

If it only happens when the child spends time out doors it might be allergies. A question to ask the doctor is could it be allergies and get refered to an allergist than you can find out if it is trees or grass. Than you can get more information from him or her.
Because giving abotics for allegies only makes the problem wrose. I know I have allergies. They can be a big problem this time of year with all of the blooming going on. But it can be managed with meds that work and shots. But it is best to find what all the child is allergic to and go from there.

Sounds like allergies you may try childrens Claritin. It has dosing info for age 2 and up. Hope she gets better soon!!

We have a similiar problem with my now 2 1/2 year old. She stayed with a sinus infection from about 2 1/2 months to now... She would start off clear and then more quickly to green. We had tubes put in and adnoids removed at 1 year. That seemed to help greatly for about 6 - 8 months. She has also had her immune system tested which showed a slighty low reading on one of the markers - not enough to treat though, but enough to explain why she does not clear up as quickly as some children. We have found a lot of time it is that she never completely gets the orig infection cleared up. Most of the time we end up with a Rocephin (sp?) shot. We have even had to do a round of 3 shots in a row to clear her up. A lot of doctors don't like to do that, but even her doctor said we did not have many other choices left.
I don't think I really answered your question, but more to let you know that you are not alone. My son who is 6 1/2 had to take Zrytec for several years and that seemed to control him....

Hey A.!! I would have to guess and say allergies!!! My 9 year old suffered from them for 5 years but hers were not a common allergy like pollen,actually she was tested but they did not know. Come to find out once I got rid of the chemicals in my home, she no longer took pres. allergy med. However, in your situation it sounds like it may be something outdoors! ALthough you never can tell!!! I would have him tested and see. But again like I said my daughter had her tonsils out and tubes and when all that happened they felt like she would feel better. Not really, she still woke up sneezing, with those red, watery eyes!!! Let me know if I can help!!

I have 3 kids and we all have allergies. I have had a pediatrician say that colored mucus doesn't always mean infection. what works best for us is to use Zyrtec daily. It is now over the counter, but we were using it before then too. Some studies have shown that using zyrtec regularly can ward against asthma. Asthma goes along with allergies a lot of the time. My son has allergy-induced asthma and it stays in check for the most part as long as I stay on top of his allergies by being consistent with his allergy meds. When it is at its worse, I will also give them sudafed decongestant. I just use that when they are extremely congested, not daily.

Allergies typically dont manifest until they're about 2yrs old, so that could be your answer. My youngest has horrible allergies - I had to cut her breastfeeding early due to a surgery. She was on Claritin and Singulair for a long time. I did a diet change for everyone in the house after I was dx'ed with breast cancer, and I was able to take her off her meds. Actually, both of my girls have only been sick about once or twice in the last 2 yrs - and even then it was mild compared to everyone elses. I cut out all processed foods and additives and really pushed our veggies (they really love vegetables, so it wasnt too hard). I make a lot of stir frys and everyone loves em. - Send me an email if you'd like any more info. Now Cori only has the occasional flair up - mid spring or when she sticks her face in a cat, but a few doses of Benadryl or Claritin clears her right up. Hope this helps :}

Hey A., unfortunately allergies in children can't be tested until the age of 5. Her symptoms do sound like allergies, even the green runny nose. The nose has eosinophils and when they sluff off from allergies, the color is green, this makes people think they have an infection when it may not be so. Have you tried antihistamines? Zyrtec and Clarinex are considered safe for young children according to their manufacturer, talk to your pediatrician to see if you should start one of these.

Have you tried a food elimination diet?
Could be food sensitivities.
Dairy, wheat, soy, and corn are biggies!
Also... avoiding ALL sugar (juices included) will help a ton!

I would bring her to the ped. then get a referral to the allergist. Then they can pinpoint the exact allergy, and treat her for just that. Have you tried just plain ole zyrtec or clariton? My now 5-year old ended up on Singulair when she was 2.... I just took her off of it about a month ago. Her allergies act up in the fall & Spring seasons... every year. But Clariton & zyrtec didn't work for her. Also, the allergy season will soon be coming to an end, so you may see an improvement w/your daughter in the next month or so. If it comes back in the fall, then you can put her on an allergy med. just during those allergy seasons.

Not to worry, you daughter has allergies. I went threw this with all my son's (all grown now)ages 30, 27 & 19. You could give her claritin (loritidine) or zyrtec. All can be bought OTC (over the counter). She should take one every day. It you wait 7-10 days before giving anything, she will get a sinus infection, that is the green mucous. It will only clear up with antibiotics. Some Doctor's would probable give Singulair chewable also. They will all so want to run blood test to see exactly what she is allergic to. My oldest son was on allergy shots for 10 years, but as he grew it got better. He only take something during the spring. Children's benadryl is also good, but may cause drowsiness. Since she is only 2 & depending on her weight an ENT (ear, nose & throat Dr.) would be great. Hope you do ok.

I just want to add one thing. If you decide to go with over-the-counter (Claritin,Zyrtec,or generic) allergy treatments, like lots of mom's have suggested, talk to a pharmacist about dosage amounts. The amount suggested on the bottle is for the "average" 2 year old. If your daughter is big or small for her age you may need to adjust the dose. Most pharmacists will take the time to figure up the exact dosage she needs based on her weight. Also, see what the pharmacist says about taking her off the meds when allergy season passes. My 7 year old is on Singulair (prescription) and I was told not to take him off the meds b/c your body needs the stores of the drug in order for it to work right and this way you can always be on top of the sniffles before they start. By the way, untreated allergy congestion can turn into infection so don't ignore it. At least treat the symptoms with decongestant or something to dry up the mucus.
I do have one crazy idea...what about letting her play outside a day or two while she wears one of those masks that they give out at Dr. offices if your coughing in the waiting room. It might be hard to get a 2 year old to leave it on but if she did not get the usual sniffles afterwards then you could be pretty sure it is allergies.

It sounds like allergies. Try Zyrtec, its over-the-counter now so you don't need to go to the doctor for it. My daughter's allergies are the same way. Good luck and if that doesn't help then I would recommend taking her the the doctor.

It is allergies. My daughter had them so severe....well it affected her so badly. The only remedy I found for her was allergy shots which I had to give her and by then she was 4 years old. I feel certain it is not a cold but it has nothing to do with immune system.

I have been down the same road. Sounds like your 2 year old has allergies. Ask your ped to put her on Singulair. You take it once a day and its for indoor/outdoor allergies and you will see a huge difference. Also, Nasonex for her nose(once a day) and you will see a different child. I have had sooo many friends go thru this and they all got on singulair. I am not a doctor but those symptoms sound just like allergies...The Medicine takes about 2 weeks before you see results. I would just take her to the doctor and ask the doctor why she is doing this so often. You never know what it is. I thought I had allergies because I am always sneezing, stopped up, drainage, coughing, and dry itchy eyes. So, I went and was allergy tested. Guess what...I have all the symptoms of allergies but am allergic to nothing. None of the allergy medicine worked on me. The allegy specalist I went to said this was because things just irritated my sinuses and eyes, there were actually no histamines being produced. He told me to take decongestants. Basically, he said there's nothing I can do. It's frustrating. I'd try some kind of allergy medicine and if it doesn't work, take her to the doctor. It may or may not be allergies!

She seems to have really bad allergies. A cold would not come on so quickly. Enjoy playing outside but when you come in, you will need to immediately change all clothing and wash her off (head to toe) in the tub to remove all outdoor allergens. No sleeping with windows open anytime during the year. Having a well child wins over getting the fresh air in your house. There are some really good over the counter non-drowsy antihistamines. Our sons takes Alavert often and it's just once a day, dissolve on the tongue. Since she is younger, go to their website www.alavert.com and check on the ages/dosages. Your dr. could prescribe something if she's too young. Try the daily antihistamine and bathing quickly to see if that helps. Everyone else will need to change clothes also to keep outdoor allergens from getting on the furniture that she would be touching. Hope this helps!

It sounds like allergies turning into a sinus infection. I would go to the doctor and ask but if they aren't much help I would try some zyrtec or claritin. The doctor's diagnosed my 2 year old with allergies, but they didn't do an accutal test. The medicine seems to work, it just makes her a little tired after the initial does. Good luck!

Well, my daughter is almost 2, and we've been having the same problem. But I've been told that if her eyes are watering, then it's just allergies. I bought her some liquid allergy medicine and it seems to be helping. I, myself don't have allegies, but my husband and in-laws have them real bad. So I would try to get some allergy medicine, and if it doesnt help, then maybe take her to the doctor. I hope this helps!

I feel your pain... I have a 17 month old son with the same symptoms. He was tested for allergies and the tests only showed a mild reaction to a type of grass. Since his doctors were only telling me to increase the dosage of Nasonex, Zyrtec, and Cheratussin (a narcotic cough medicine) and my baby still had no relief, I took him to a naturopathic doctor. The first thing he asked me ws if Joshua had been hospitalized for anything recently. He was hospitalized with double pneumonia and bronchitis (which also started with the same symptoms) in February. So, while he was in there (8 days), of course, they loaded him up with strong antibiotics, which killed all of the good bacteria in his system. Dr. Hunter explained that when you don't have enough good bacteria, it allows the histamine in your body to rise drastically - thus making you very susceptible to the least bit of allergens. We put Joshua on Probiotic (which is simply the good bacteria that our body needs (I put it in his juice) and an herbal rub (which smells kind of like Vicks salve) to rub on him at night for the cough(works better than the cough meds). They did tell me to keep him on Zyrtec for another week and then start trying to back off of it, so as to give the Probiotic time to get into his system. I just really got tired of filling him full of medications that made him sluggish and irritable and that are potentially addictive (Cheratussin). I can't tell you how much better he has been! We started this the first week of April and have already seen major improvements! I know that every child is different, but this has worked for us! God Bless!

allergies turning into colds .... the clear runny nose (unless its still cold in your state) is the clue. Actually, her immune system is not low but hyperactive per se. Her body is doing just what it's supposed to do when there's an "enemy within" which is pollen or something she's being exposed to. There are white blood cells that have histimine in them and they rush to the body's aid -- allergy. That's why people take antihistimines! I have seasonal allergies and I HATE them!

ALLERGIES. I am familiar with this cycle as well. I myself, my almost 5 year old and 18 mo. old daughters all have allergies. My oldest takes Zyrtec and the baby takes Allegra as well as Flonase nasal spray daily. The runny nose starts (and itchy, watery eyes are a clue to allergies too) and in a week here comes the green nose. Now that they both have ear tubes and take antihistamines and flonase (for seasonal allergies) it's getting better. Also a problem for us are dogs and cats. You may want to have a blood test done (by an allergist) on your 2 year old to see what she's allergic to - molds, pollens, trees, dust, etc. I hope this helps.

Sounds to me like your daughter has allergies to mostly outdoor allergens.You should probably take her to your regular Dr.and explain that she only gets sick when you have spent the previous day outdoors.The Dr.can put her on some meds for allergies,and they may have to try different ones to find the one that will work for her.When her snot turns green that means she has a sinus infection,and as time goes on she may get them more frequently if left untreated or she may grow out of it.I have three children and my middle child suffers with allergies and I have them too,so I know what works for me and my child.It did take some time to find the right allergy med for him though,he has had allergies since about 2 years of age and it is mostly outdoor allergens,he is 8 now and is rarely sick.Hope this will help you and give you a little more insight to allergies.Have a Blessed day and good luck.D. My son has similar allergy symptoms, except rarely does the snot run green. He is 4. We tried bendryl, claritin, and zyrtec from the time he was two until four with very little effect. Our PCM referred us to Dr. McQueen in Enterprise. HE is FANTASTiC!!!! My son is now using Veramyst nose spray and we haven't seen any symptoms except the occasional slight clear snot in months. I'm not sure if this medicine is right for a two year old but it's great when they get older.

Hi A., sounds like your daughter has allergies. Allergies seem alot like a cold, minus the chest congestion, sinus headache, and sinus congestion. Sometimes the drainage will start off green from sitting in the sinuses all night then turn clear. Recent speculation is that green drainages isn't always a sign of a sinus infection as previously thought. As a mom of a 2-year-old boy who has had some allergy symptoms lately and as a pharmacist I recommend giving her a teaspoonful of Zyrtec liquid (it's now OTC!! :o)) at bedtime as needed for the allergy symptoms. Some children have such a hard time with allergies that pediatricians will prescribe Singulair (which works differently than antihistamines like Zyrtec). Singulair has shown to be very effective against seasonal allergies. But first I would give the Zyrtec a try (since it is sooo much cheaper... $10-$13 for a 4 oz bottle) and then if that doesn't work talk to your pediatrician about Singulair or even using a steroid nasal spray like Flonase or Nasonex. Good luck... Let us know how that works for you.

Since you didn't say where you live and what the temperature is when you go outside, it's hard to say, but since I suffer from allergies I'd say it's allergies. Maybe you should change your play area to another location. You can also see her pediatrician for allergy medication to prevent these episodes. When it's green running, it's infection. But DO NOT have her tested for allergies. She's too young and probably will outgrow this. At any rate, at her age they get too many positives for allergies. Just try to stay away from blooming things, and pollenating trees. Good luck and don't worry! It will be fine.

The rule of thumb is if the snot is not clear it's not allergies, its an infection of some kind. The cold and flu season has been bad this year, so although that many colds may be disconcerting, I'm not sure it's necessarily out of the ordinary. If she's in day care, it definitely not unusual they get it and pass it around, if she's always been at home w/ you and not in day care, her immune system is probably not as good as you think. My daughter went though those same symptoms a few times this spring too. You can keep it from getting worse or clear up faster if you treat the congestion and nasal drip...saline spray, suction, decongestant, humidifier.

Here are a couple of links that I found helpful. I have tons of allergies so I usually say if it starts out clear and runny and there is no fever it is allergies. They can turn bad and yucky green after a while because it just gets so full in their little sinus' and then infection and fever can startup. We have used childrens Claritin and had good allergy relief but some strange personality side effects. I figured out a full dose was too much for K, and it dried her out too much. She was uncomfortablely dry and was having headaches. If you treat this with over the counter drugs just watch and "less is better" is my motto.

It sounds like it is allergies. My 9 1/2 month old has already visited an allergist (in January) and had tubes put in both ears (in March). He is allergic to eggs, corn, soy, and mold and has eczema and allergen induced asthma. Looking at him though, you would never think he had that many problems (24 lbs. and 31 in.), so they don't have to be a sickly looking child to have severe allergies. What you describe sounds like exactly what we have had going on this spring, and especially if we are outside the day before! A big thing though, is does she have fever with her symptoms? If not, then it is most likely allergies. Ian takes Clarinex twice daily, and Singulair at night. You should discuss her symptoms with your doctor and possibly see an allergist. Medication won't make her problems totally go away, but will significantly help. Good luck!

That sounds like allergies to me. We live in Ar. and moved here from California in 1992. Never had problems with allergies in my life until I moved to the south. I would take your child to the doctor or get a referrral to a allergy specialist and they can see what type of things she is allergic to. Since you said you were outside on Monday it sounds like she could be allergic to pollen or even cut grass in the air.

My grandchildren 3years old and 8 months old have been on Zymine since they were 3 months old. If you give them this they don't get sick. The clear runny nose happens but that is all. It is very safe and makes the litle one sleepy but not bad. Ask your doctor about it. I believe it will solve your problem.

My daughter was the same way. I had to continually take her to the doctor (about 4 to 5 times a year)because she kept getting these head colds (sneezing, running eyes, coughing, sore throat) and I didn't understand why. The doctor tried her on zyrtec and now she only goes to the doctor about once a year for check ups. Please try an allergy medication (ask pharmacist for a recommendation) and if this does not work, take her to the doctor and tell him that he needs to find out what is wrong with her. We have been fighting the same problem with my 10 month old since she was born. The doc said we could use Zyrtec after 6 mo. old and it is really working great. We give her 1/2 tsp before bed and 1/2 tsp in the morning (12 hours apart). She is A LOT better!!!!

My son will be 2 in June we have the same problems. I have a horrible boss who is not understanding at all when I get a call saying I need to pick him up from daycare or when I call in sick because of his "allergies". Exact problems like what you are having. I just recently started him on Singulair, he has only been taking it about 4 days,I honestly haven't seen a change in the symptoms. I am also worried about his health, why would a little guy be so sick all the time, he should be healthy. We have an appointment with the ear, nose and throat Dr. in a few weeks, they seem to think he may be of some help. I will let you know. I feel for you, let me know if you find the answer. I do not have allergies either so this is new for me, I pray we can soon get to the bottom of this. Though this is frustrating for me, my son is also suffering and I hate that. It sounds lots like allergies... green mucus could just be pollen and stuff getting in there, but it could also be a cold on top of allergies. My 4 1/2 year old is on Zyrtec for seasonal allergies and it's done wonderfully-she's been on it since age 2. We live in an area that perpetuates allergies like crazy. Definitely check with your doctor, though you could try an antihistamine (Zyrtec just went OTC) and see how she does... if you fear a cold on top of that-zicam nasal swabs are great for that... often you just try to treat the symptoms because there isn't anything else you can do! Sure sounds like allergies to me. I empathize with her. I have had allergies all my life and my oldest son suffers from them. This time of year is just bad for that kind of thing if you have a lot of pollen where you live.

You probably need to limit outside play time during this time of year. I can get sneezy and my eyes water just from being outside for a little while. We use Claritin before we go outside as a preventive measure. I really feel miserable when my allergies act up.

Sounds like she is getting an infection later from the allergies. Have you spoken to your doctor about the allergies?

One of the things that we are doing right now is washing our children's hands and faces when we come inside. Also, changing their clothes once you have come inside may eliminate some of the runny nose due to pollen and outside allergens. And, though this is can be a hassle, giving your little one a bath every evening before bedtime will help. This washes away all pollen from the body that she may be breathing in. Many drs. and pediatricians are now saying this will help reduce our reactions to outside allergies and our need to take medicine. It is helping with our littlest one (8 months)and we are able to hold off on medications unless absolutely necessary.

If those suggestions do not help, it may indeed be a cold causing your little one to suffer.

You need to talk with her doctor and maybe get an allergist to look at her. I have nephews who could hardly ever go outdoors during their childhoods and had to have special filters on the air conditioner, and a friend has a son with the same problem.

Sounds like she has allergies. This time of year you will see this a lot. My doctor has my twins on Singulair and Claritin. I would definitely ask your doctor, but I think it sounds like allergies. Claritin is over the counter now and you could try it the children's dose and see if it helps.

We have had similar problems with my 3 year old. He did have tubes in his ears at 16 months, which helped with ear infections. But more recently experienced the clear runny nose turning into a sinus infection with green runny nose. Our ped. prescribed clarinex (claritin), which didn't work for him. We saw the allergy specialist who prescribed zyrtec (now available over the counter for children) and it has worked wonders. The allergy spec. said that often children's sinus cavities get blocked because the tubes out (of nose or ears) are so small, so mucous from regular allergies will get stuck in the sinus cavities and become infected. I'm not big on medication, but this has prevented him from having sinus infections for a few months now. We also did the skin/scratch test on him and found out he was allergic to trees...which stop pollenating soon, so we won't need to take the medicine year-round. If your daughter starts with clear runny nose, i would definitely suspect it's allergies.

The symptoms sound like seasonal allergies. The green mucus could be a sign of sinus infection. I would make an appointment with her pediatrician to make sure the infection is clearing up and see what kind of anti-histimines are recommended for toddlers.

I would say that it is allergies. This time of year is the worst for allergies. I would go to walmart or your local drug store and get her an over the counter alergy med. Give it to her daily even if she is cleared up. This helps wonderfully. You can usually stop the med after a month or so. You might find that you need to give it to her in the fall also. I know with my little guy we give allergy med when the weather starts changing both fall and spring. Spring is worse because of all the flowers blooming. There is also a thing called a nettie (SP) pot. This washes their nose out but I can't get my 5 year old to let me do it. We are starting the tea spoon of local honey a day to see if this will help. My son is 5 I would talk to my Dr. before giving a 2 year old honey.

It could be a allergie.They can come from one day to another.I was told by doctors if it comes green then there are bacteria involved.Maybe you should take your child to a allergie test and you can never tell if the immunsystem is down or not, just make sure your child eats healthy and consult a doctor.

I have a 2 year old son who had the same symptoms, at our two year check up, I explained the symptoms to our Pediatrician, who said he was not surprised (my son has had small bouts of pneumonia since he was 8months old) so he put him on Allegra, and gave me an antibiotic to get rid of the GREEN stuff. We haven't been on the abx or the allegra a week, but it's working wonderfully..he feels better than I do (I do have the allergies too)...you can always start her on some over the counter Claritin to see if that clears her up too. I hope this helps.

ok, i didn't read any of the other moms responces so i may be repeating something. My son and nephew has the same problem. My son has had a conjested cough since Oct. of last year. We have started Clariton. We haven't been on it long to tell a differnece,but another suggestion you may want to consider, My nephew has been doing breathing treatments with no avail. His Dr. has decided to put him on clariton for a month and then take an x-ray of his sinuses to see if that is the problem. You may want to consider that.

We have the same problem here! I swear my youngest son was born with allergies! I would take your child to the doc and be very specific about the symptoms. My middle child had a scratch test done by an allergist, and I'm sure that the youngest and I should have that done as well. Anyway, he showed positive for dust mites, apples, and cherries. His allergies aren't as bad as his younger brother who suffers in the same way that you're describing. They have both been put on allergy meds and we just avoid apples and cherries. Good Luck!

Sounds like allergies that turns into an infection. Clear runny nose is usually allergies. And pollen is up really high the last few weeks. I hate giving my daughter medicine on a regular basis. Her nose was running like a faucet when spring hit. I went to Akins and got the children's allergy drops. After almost 2 weeks of taking it, her runny nose has stopped. But if it's green, she's got an infection. Get that handled first. She needs anti-botics to kick that one. I have allergies and ended up with a sinus infection for the first time ever this year. It all stemmed from allergies.

A. we just came back from the pediatrician with my one month old baby girl who caught it from me, who caught it from my 2 year old (3 in July). Dr. Stone said it's definitely allergies or a cold which means that without a fever, antibiotics have no effect on a virus. It's very frustrating! For your 2 year old, she can take 1/2 - 1 tsp. of Children's Claritin or Zyrtec once a day. It will take about 3-4 days to see a difference but it has lessened the symptoms in my son. Dr. Stone said it's a really bad year for allergies.

Sounds like she has allergies. A doctor can test her for them and she can get shots to help them .

I am a chiropractor and help many children with their health using natural methods. There are a couple things that may really help your daughter. Often times, the birth process can be the cause of the problem. It can misalign the neck, putting pressure on the spine and nerves. This can weaken the immune system, and cause health problems. Only a chiropractor can tell for sure if her alignment is off. Medical doctors are not trained to evaluate the alignment of the spine.

Welcome to Alabama, I don't know how long you guys have been.
Allergies are one of those annoying things that seem to get the best of us. Our family has been taking something called Juice Plus...which is simply concentrated fruits and veggies in a gummie or capsule form for adults. It has really seemed to build our immune systema and lessent the allergy attacks. They aren't gone but much severe. I hope this helps a little to know you aren't alone.

sounds like allergies? My kids can't take antihistamines b/c they cause sinus and ear infections; however, Allegra was recently prescribed for my 8 yo dd and she's a new person. We're still having her tested next week, though. Your 2 yo is having same symptoms as my dd and my 6 yo niece, who definitely has allergies. Btw, I began boosting my dd's immune system with probiotics and vitamins, particularly vitamin C and cod liver oil.

My daughter is 2 as well and had the same issue. Her doctor put her on liquid allegra and she has been great since. If she does have a flare up, it's not near as bad. The flare ups do not happen as often since the allegra.

I have had problems with allergies my whole life and had to have sinus surgery a few years ago. I was told to flush my nose with saline solution. Every time I start feeling it coming on with a runny nose, I start flushing. My doctor told me that if people would flush their sinuses no one would have to take sinus medicine.
I have a 13 month old who has been on antibiotics 4 times for sinus infections. I finally started using little noses saline spray when he starts sneezing and suction his nose out. He hasn't had a sinus infection since. Of course he doesn't like it because I have to hold him down. It doesn't hurt he just doesn't like not being able to get up for a few seconds. I'm sorry to say that it does sound like allergies...the clear runny nose and then the next day green. My ped. had told me, during the night that the mucous "congeals" and that is why it looks greenish to yellow. My 4 year old is allergic to pretty much everything, so we fight this problem (feels like all year sometimes). She has been on so many allergy medications, but I have learned that if you don't put her on something for the allergies, she can end up with sinus infections, bronchial problems, more infections and that just leads to more antibiotics. We have also had to do breathing treatments sometimes every 4 hours (even during the night). I would recommend you take her to an allergy clinic where they will do a blood test to see what all she is allergic to. Also, if you do put her on allergy medication, be sure and watch her behavior....we have noticed that when our daughter is on Zyrtec, she doesn't listen as well and her behavior goes downhill. I hope this helps, I know it is frustrating b/c it is finally nice outside and you don't want to keep your child cooped up all day.

Sounds to me like she is going through the same thing I did a few years ago. It sounds like she is having allergy problems and then it leads to a sinus infection. The green mucus is usually a pretty good indicator of an infection. And with allergies, the mucus is usually clear. I experienced the same thing a few years ago and it turns out that I was never really getting rid of the infection. I would take antibiotics and it would seem to clear things up (no pun intended, lol) but always returned pretty quickly. I ended up having to take some pretty strong antibiotics to finally get rid of it. I hope this helps so that you, and her, can finally get some relief!! It's NO fun not being able to breathe!

It's the pollen in the air!
I don't usually have allergies, but my son (2yrs) & I both do this year. (we recently moved to a wooded area in Edmond) I noticed recently he was doing better with his than I was. I figured out why. When we play outside, which is every night, the pollen sticks to us. I noticed it all over everything outside, the toys, trash can, drive way, etc. I give my son a bath every night & change his sheets often. I use the nose sucker each night before bed. I also use saline drops in the morning to help thin the mucus so he doesn't choke on it. I also doubled up on his multi vitamins, give him immune vitamins (C & zinc), and a couple visits to the chiropractor. I also stopped giving him milk, which thickens the mucus and make allergies symptoms worsen. After about 1 week, he's doing lots better. Not much sign of allergies at all, just a little drippy nose when we are outside. Since I figured out the pollen was sticking to us, I wash my sheets more & started taking showers before bed. It worked immediately. I hadn't slept for 3 days, because I would wake up coughing (croup like) and couldn't stop. Washing the pollen off fixed that. Good luck & Happy Spring!
