Allergy Medication for a 2 Year Old

I'm looking for a safe allergy medication for my 2 year old daughter. She's had a runny nose, sneezing and a cough for about a week. The discharge is clear and the rest of us in the house are also experiencing allergy symptoms, so I'm pretty safe in saying she doesn't have a cold. Plus, she's had no fever and doesn't act like she does when she's sick. We've alternated between Dimetapp and Benadryl to control her symptoms, but after a few days of only one or two doses a day, she has frequent light colored pasty bowel movements. There not quite as loose as diarrhea, but she goes from 2 bm's a day to as many as 5 in one day. I'm hoping that someone else has also experienced this and found an alternative treatment that controls the symptoms without all the stinky yucky poo!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. My daughter's molars came in early, so we've already been through that and she did have similar symptoms then. I discontinued the allergy meds and her bm's went back to normal. I'm glad to know that some other mothers have had good experiences with Zyrtec and Claritin. We do use a humidifier in her room at night and I try to limit the use of any drugs. I'm planning to watch her for another day or two to see if I can notice a pattern in her symptoms. I'll also call our pediatrician to see if he thinks she would benefit from trying something like Zyrtec. Thanks again for all the help!

Here's advice for a couple years from now...I'm sure you're saying that's great lady but I need help now!! Anyway, my daughter who is now 9 could hardly EVER breathe through her nose and we know now it is due to allergies (just about to be tested to find out what she is allergic to). My husband discovered NeilMed Nose Wash and it has been a Godsend to he and my daughter. He has used it everyday for the past year and it really works wonders. He tried years of Clariton and other prescriptions but still struggled everyday with his nose and sinuses! Upon taking my daughter to the ENT he put her on this nose wash as well as a few other items and this wash is incredible! Your daughter is too young now to do it but research it and start using it when you're able. It is doctor recommeded-infact he uses it himself! It is just ph balanced saline. Spread the word to all your friends who suffer from allergies! Good Luck.

Both my daughters have allergies, one is 2 and one is 4. While I definitely recommend you discuss this with your doctor to determine your child's symptoms are definitely allergies (it sounds like it to me)and to determine the best medication for your child (sometimes it is prescription), I can tell you what I give to my girls. My pediatrician recommended Clariton and Benedryl. I use Clariton on the occassions their allergies are really bad-lots of sneezing, watery eyes, scratchy throat, post-nasal drip, that kind of thing. I usually follow the instructions my pediatrician gave me and I administer it when they first wakes up. It is supposed to last all day, but occasionally at night, if their symptoms are worse, I will administer Benedryl which helps them sleep. I try to go without the medications as often as I can because I do not want to give them too much medicine, but both my children have been diagnosed with both food and airborne allergies. My oldest also has a prescription for Flonaise-it is a nose spray, but she hates it, so we are not able to use it right now. I hope this information helps. I would definitely talk with your pediatrician before giving your daughter too many medications that may not be right for her symptoms though.

I am a proud mother of 3, all who experience allergies like myself. Our pediatrician told us to use Children's Benadryl-D Allergy and Sinus. I only use it once a day, but I also like to use the Little Noses to keep their noses clear. Alot of warm baths with some Cetephil cleansing gel keeps their skin from getting too dry and the steem keeps them from getting too stuffy.
Best of luck!!

Hi A.,

I would recommend seeing a doctor and getting their advice. Your daughter is very young and OTC drugs have caused problems in the past year so it's best to get a professional opinion. I have a severely allergic daughter, so I know what a drag it is.

hello, I am a mother of a son who is almost two. My son takes zyrtec and singulair. They both work in different ways and works great for my son. My husband and I both have allergies as well and I read that if both parents have allergies then your child has a 78% chance on having allerigies themselves. Singulair is safe for children 6 months and up and so is zyertec. I would talk to your Dr. about it. My son has been so much better since he has been on them. My son has really bad allergies so he needs to be on both but most children only need to be on one. We also took my son to the allergist to be tested so we know exactly what he is allergic to so I can try and keep him away from it. We found out that one thing my son is allergic to was our dogs and we had 3 of them. We gave 2 away and we just have one now and as soon as we move she will be outside most of the time. He has been doing so much better. I hope this information is helpful to you. Take care and God bless you! D.

Are you sure that she's not also just getting in her two year molars? Teeting can cause running nose and coughing too...I would be careful with this type of medication, there's a lot out there right now with concerns that it doesn't really do anything beneficial for kids this age and can instead harm the child. Talk with your pediatrician to be sure...

You really should have her seen by the pediatrician. Self diagnosing and treating a toddler is dangerous. Even if it is with a child's medication. The doctor will help you to figure out what she is allergic to so you can help her avoid that rather than treat her with medications that can and apparently are making her sick. As far as the cold goes, just because the discharge is clear only means there is no infection. You can have a cold w/out infection. I hope this helps you.

Hi A.,
I'm sorry your daughter has allergies. However, if she is feeling ok, it's probably best to keep medicines to a minimum. When I gave my son too much cold medicine, he started to act hyper.

During the day, just let her cough and let her nose run. At night, try using a cold water humidifier and air purifier in her room to help her sleep. You can also clean her nose with saline spray a few times a day. That will help clear her nose as well.

If she can't sleep due to cough, maybe just give her some nighttime cough medicine to help her sleep. But check with your doctor first to see what he recommends. There are a lot of new studies that say it is not good to give young children allergy medicine.

Good luck!

hi A. - i believe that singular and perhaps even claritin & zyrtec are approved from 6months and up. you should definitely speak to your pediatrician. if he says it most likely is allergies (and i think they determine this by tracking a steady "cold" for 3 months or more)he can point you in the direction of medications that are meant to be taken daily as opposed to dimetapp and benadryl that are used once symptoms arise.

My son was diagnosed with allergies from when he was 11 months old - he was prescribed Zyrtec by the pediatric allergist and has safely used it ever since (he is now 3 1/2) - so I'd suggest this. Plus - it is now available over the counter so you don't need a prescription and can buy it at any drugstore! Dosage depends upon weight and the liquid format is what we used. Good luck!

Hi A.,
I always get sad when I see that the response to our kids ailments is medication. I am from the school of support the body to do what it was created to do...heal itself. It sounds to me as though there are some immune issues and if you were to support her system to function properly. There are two things I would suggest, first I would suspect she has digestive issue with how you describe her bowel movements. I would suggest removing wheat for 2 weeks and then dairy if the situation doesn't improved. Either or both can cause the cold like symptoms she is having. Second I also give my kids the nutrients they are missing via supplements (you just can't get from your food what is needed for proper functioning bodies these days) and we have not had ailments in 3 years...pretty good. check with your pediatrician. My kids all had really bad allergies. At a pretty young age, I think 2, my pediatrician gave me a nasal spray (Nasacort I think). Said it was totally safe because it was delivered directly to the nasal passages and there were no side effects because it didn't pass through the stomach and get metabolized into the system.

I would consult your pediatrician. You can never assume anything when it comes to children's health. I've never heard of allergy medicine causing diarrhea, so she may have a bug. Also, you should always ask a doctor before giving medicine since you don't know exactly what's wrong. I hope this helps, and I hope your baby feels better soon.

Anytime feces turn pale suspect some kind of temporary issue with liver function, which is responsible for releasing bile which turns the feces that warm brown color.

I would first find out what the allergy is to rather than medicate. We've become accustomed to using medicines as a cure all but you would really be shocked by the warning labels on many of those meds! Personally, I'd prefer alittle sniffling to many of those complications.

Homeopathy is great for allergies, as is NAET (which eliminated ALOT of my longstanding allergies to milk, and egg, citric acids and cat).

There is a great homeopathic pharmacy in Santa Monica (Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy) as well as one in Granada Hills on Balboa just past Rinaldi). There are some really good staff at both sites too.

Eat yogurt and increase fiber: Food intolerances seem to be connected with seasonal allergies. A healthy and active colon can decrease food sensitivity, which can, in turn, lighten the burden on your immune system and may reduce the impact of seasonal allergies. For maximum colon health, increase the fiber in your diet and eat yogurt. The active cultures in yogurt can restore the balance between good and bad bacteria in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In a study conducted at the University of California, patients who were fed 18 to 24 ounces of yogurt a day experienced a decline in their allergic symptoms by 90 percent.

Stop the medication for 48 hrs. Stop all milk products for 48 hrs. Give her pedilight or popcycles, clear juices like apple juice juicy juices etc. The stool may indicate she is trying to cut her molars and the other symptoms go along with that. IF she starts crying and whinning before each stool and it remains pasty in color take her to the doctor. She may have a telascopting of the small intestine into the large or a blockage which is not uncommon in children of that age. Don't panic but I would advise to take her to the Peditrician.

Dear A.:

Here's a story for you. My grand daughter Gwenevere started being sick non-stop when she was about 4 months old. You know the story from there better than I do I'm sure, and it resulted in her having tubes put in when she was about 9 months old. While the severity of her discomfort eased for a bit, she continued getting "sick" and instead of the doctors thinking it was always a cold or flu, they began to say it might be allergies. The doctors then decided she had asthma. The poor baby was receiving wave after wave of antibiotics, and antihistimines and tylenol, and motrin. She was still getting up several times a night. The poor thing thought this was "normal."

During this time I became aware of NAET and began treating regarding some of my personal matters (please visit NAET.COM) and read the book "Say Good-Bye to Illness." I also bought for my son and dil the book "Say Good-bye to Children's Allergies." Last month Gwen was treated for her allergies to dust and animals. Guess what? No more mucous! And she is eating much more and sleeping longer at night. She is still allergic to a lot of other things, which are being treated one by one in an orderly fashion. Soon she will be allergy free! In the meantime, she feels SO much better.

There is a physician locator button on the website, or you may email me and I'll tell you who we use and love.

Best wishes,

M.
