Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Hi Moms,

During my last pregnancy, I went to a chiropractor for back pain, and it really helped. I want to go again now, but my previous dr has moved and I need to find someone new. There are many in my healthplan, but I am wondering - is there any kind of certification or particular training that a chiropractor should have to practice on pregnant women? Are there any particular questions I should ask besides the obvious "do you have experience with women during pregnancy?"

Last time I did this, I had a recommmendation, this time I am screening doctors myself and want to make sure I go to someone who knows what he/she is doing with respect to pregnancy!

Thanks!

I went to Back to Health Chiropractic. They are prenatal certified, and really are great. They are located just south of Route 1, on Route 202 on Glen Mills. If that is convenient for you, their phone pumber is ###-###-####. I went to them thru my last pregnancy, and would greatly reccomend them.

I don't know where in Pittsburgh you're located, but if you're anywhere in the South Hills, Family First Chiropractic is wonderful. I actually saw Dr. Jonas Marry throughout my last pregnancy. He had a pregnancy table where the stomach drops down and he actually helped turn my baby from breech to head down. I don't have his number available to me, but I highly recommend him to help during your pregnancy.

Best of luck to you!

Ask your OBGYN for a recommendation. My clinic has a chiropractor there in the office. They may have a better idea who to go to during your pregnancy. Good luck!

Hi, Diane!
Congrats on your pregnancy! You definitely want to go to a chiro who specializes in prenatal (and pediatric) care. It's not a very common certification, and it's definitely ok to ask your chiropractor if they have this. Not sure where you live, but the 2 best in the area are Ohm Chiropractic, on the Main Line, and Rhino Chiropractic, in Mt. Airy. You can google either of them for their contact info.

Best,
T.

Hi Diane. I know a great chiropractor who specializes in treating women and children. I am not 100% sure, but I do believe she treats pregnant women. She has gone through extensive training above what is normally required for chiropractors and has certification in pediatrics. You could call her and check with her about pregnancy. Her name is Dr. Caroline Barry and her office number is ###-###-####. She is in West Chester. Hope this helps!

Hi Diane!
I noticed that you are in Pittsburgh. If you are willing to drive to White Oak, Dr. Agona is certified in the "(I forget but it begins with a W)" technique. PLUS he uses the "Proadjuster" which is MUCH gentler and keeps you from twisting in different positions. PLUS there is a complimentary 15 minute massage at every appointment(and the massage therapist is well trained in pregnancy massage). I highly recommend them, and I was treated there for both of my last two pregnancies. :)

Where are you located? I have a fabulous chiro to recommend who sees patients in Center City Phila and out in the suburbs near Media I believe. He specializes in pregnancy and children. Justin Ohm is his name.

I work for a chiropractor (Janet Harriger in Lancaster, PA) - I don't know what area you are looking in. I think all cover treating during pregnancy in school, the difference you may notice between chiropractors is what technique they use. That doesn't mean one is good/the other bad, just that there are different ones.

I believe you want to look for a chiropractor who knows the "Webster Technique" - the technique is used to help moms who have a breech baby, but by knowing this technique, you know the doctor will be used to working on pregnant ladies. My daughter wasn't breach, but my chiropractor used this method on me while I was pregnant, it did wonders for my lower abdominal pain

Congratulations, Diane!

I have been going to Dr. Robert Smith, in Forks Twp (Easton) for about 3 yrs now--since I was a few mos pregnant w/ my second.
He was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!! He has lots of experience w/ pregnant women and w/ infants & small children too (I've taken my children to see him on several occasions. Especially if they're really sick). He has 3 kids of his own, so he's got lots & lots of experience.

My son was in a very awkward position at the very end of my pregnancy & he was able to coerce him into getting into a more favorable position for labor.

If you live anywhere near this area, I really think you should check him out. I think his site is: www.DrRobertSmith.com --If you make an appt, please let them know that I referred you!

Good luck & congrats again!

I would recommend The Hetrick Center. Their main location is in Middletown ###-###-####)(that's where I go), but also have branches in Mount Joy, Mechanicsburg, and Harrisburg. I went there during my first pregnancy and continue to be treated. I am 27 weeks with my second and chiropractic care has been a blessing. Their staff is professional and experienced and they do accept a range of insurances. Congratulations and God Bless!
