Chiropractic and Pregnancy

I was receiving maintenance chiropractic care before, during and after my first pregnancy. I quit quite a few months ago, maybe even a year ago. I am now pregnant again and have been having lower back pain (nothing major). Is it safe to start chiropractic again? I will ask my dr. on the 30th, but thought I would post here, too. BTW, I don't know if it was because of chiropractic or if I was just lucky, but my first pregnancy was a breeze, hence my interest in starting again.

Thanks for any input!

Hi M.-

I was seeing one chiro when I got pregnant, but towards the end of my pregnancy had to switch because she was pregnant too! (And put on bed rest). Anyways, the new one I go see is wonderful. She's certified and has been doing it for years. And I always see pregnant women in there every time! She also does kids and adjusted my son when he was 1 month old. She's in Lisle, Dr. Cornish is at ###-###-####.

Good Luck!

Chiropractic is very safe and made my births go waaay better. I was adjusted during all 3 of my pregnancies and each one was better then the last thus far. I saw Dr. Landgrebe in tinley park with my last little one and she was great! They were very very good about letting the other two play in the office and now the younger ones get adjusted too. they have a table that would fold out specially for preg women and fit my gigantic belly! I go now to help with the back pain I get with breatfeeding.

I think your best bet is to see a women's health physical therapist. This specially trained PT can help will all aspects of pregnancy, not just adjusting the spine. To find one in your area go to www.apta.org and click on find a PT!

It is very safe - the only thing the chiropractor can't do during the pregnancy is obviously xrays and the electrical muscle stim(which is one of the therapies used in case you haven't had it before)

I was adjusted on a regular basis when I was pregnant w/ both of my girls and they have both been adjusted since they were born. I know it has been a main reason of why I had such healthy pregnancies and why they have been very healthy. A great website to check out is Illinois Prairie State Chiropractic Association. From what I remember, they had a lot of info on pregnancy/kids. Good Luck!!!!!

I am a chiropractic assistant and had adjustments during all 3 of my pregnancies.
It is safe to start care during any part of pregnancy. I have seen mant women get great relief during pregnancy and have easy and even drug free labors.
Personally, I had beautiful and easy pregnancies and natural labor resulting in healthy childreb which I contribute to chiropractic. And when I had an occasional bad day, I would get ab extra adjustment for relief!
Good luck with #2 and trust your inatincts!

First question, why did you ever quit? Your Dr's answer will depend on his belief in chiropractic. Since the spine is the center of everything, ( nerves, circulation, etc) there is nothing that can harm you and only help you.

NO, I am not a chiropractor. Just a person that believes anything we can do to better our health is a good thing.
BTW, their tables are made to use on pregnant women also.If the table is made that way, it must be a good thing, or at least the chiropractors think so.

As long as your chiropractor is trained to work with pregnant women it is safe. I was treated through my whole pregnancy and I always say that it was a breeze because of my chiropractor and yoga. Also, with back pain, it's good to continue to see you chiro after the pregnancy. As they can be helpful to regain strength in areas that were weakened over the 9 months. I go to Trillium Health and Wellness in Elburn and love the care I receive there, Dr Mennerick has two children herself so she understands what you are going through and works through issues in a holistic approach. www.trilliumchiro.com

Good luck.

Hi M.,

I would talk to your chiropractor. Mine would only treat certain parts. He refused to treat my lower back while I was pregnant. He said that if he did then it could cause a spontaneous abortion.

Best wishes on your pregnancy and newest addition to your family.

Blessings,
L.

M.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Many Moms use prenatal yoga to alleviate lower back pain along with seeing a chiropractor and their ob-gyn to prepare for childbirth. Prenatal yoga classes are available through your local park district, at some fitness centers at in Naperville at www.universalspirityoga.com (for the past ten years - we have students returning to us to prepare for child #2...no previous experience with yoga is required). Prenatal yoga students tell us that our classes have given them success with natural childbirth. More birthing resources are available at www.birthlink.com

YES YES YES!!! Chiropractic is wonderful for pregnancy and I plan on having it throughout my next pregnancy. It can ease discomfort and go a long way towards preventing many other sources of discomfort. This is definitely a time to rediscover chiropractic. If your own Chiropractor is not up on educating his clients or you just decide to try some place else, Main Street Chiropractic is where we go. I'm having my toddler adjusted regularly at the moment because she started having ear infections. Thanks to our Dr. she has never had to have antibiotics and has stopped having ear infections. Have a healthy pregnancy! :D

Yeah, it's safe and I wouldn't doubt if it's the reason for your easy first pregnancy. I went throughout both my pregnancies. Also since I did home births, I had the chiro come over while I was in labor to do some acupuncture, and he let me borrow his portable TENS machine.
