Children's Books with Daddies as Characters

Hi ladies!

I am looking for some picture books for my son (20 months) that feature daddies as main characters. I have seen some that are about what daddies do (like going to work) but I am looking more for books that just happen to have a daddy in the story. For example, we have "Guess How Much I Love You" which is about a daddy rabbit putting a baby rabbit to bed, but most of our books that have to do with love between a parent and child are about mommies. Does anyone have any suggestions? The little one has a fairly good attention span and usually can listen to books that are for older kids (maybe up to 4 or 5 years old) as long as there are a good amount of pictures.

Thanks in advance - I love this website!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I especially liked the recommendations that your own children liked - that is exactly what I had in mind. We actually have a few of these books already, but we'll be on the library website soon with a great list! Thanks again!

My son really likes this books called, "The Old Blue Pickup Truck" By Candice Ransom. Its about a girl and her dad running errands. It's not too long and is a cute story.

We got one out of the library called the Daddy Mountain and my daughter loved it. It is about a child and dad playing together and is really good.

Hmm, you're making me think hard on this one...

"We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Helen Oxenbury is a great one, and it features the dad and three kids.

"Pete's a Pizza" is very cute, too, although he may not quite understand the story yet. Mom is in the story along with a boy and his dad, but the dad/boy are the main characters.

I'm sure we've gotten other books with dad as the main character at the library, but I can't think of them right now.

A great book called "My Daddy Makes the Best Spaghetti". Sorry, don't know the author off hand. But daddy and son are main characters. Very cute book. We have read it several times in a row before bed before moving on to something different :)

There's a book we picked up that was at a Kroger, I think - it's called, "I Love You, Daddy!". It sort of looks like one of the "GoldenBooks". (There's one for Mommy too.)

There's another book called "The Moon In My Room" and it has the mommy and daddy in the book.

My son loved the Little Critter books and Calou (however it's spelled) when he was youger. Also the Berenstain Bears books have a good daddy role model. Those are wordy for a younger toddler but you can always skip words/sentences and paraphase the story as you go along if he's losing attention. :-)

Some faves I have:

Berenstain Bears Afraid of teh Dark --- any BB book has Papa Q Bear, who is really funny. In this one, though, he is endearing.

Kisses by Nanda Roep --- especially great for bedtime

Something Good by Robert Munsch --- VERY funny

I love little critter books, and now my 6 year old loves to read them all the time. I know there's one that's Just Daddy and Me. There's also a paper back book we have called What Daddies do Best. You can then flip it over and its What Mommies do Best. Its really the exact same book with the word Mommy and Daddy traded out. I thought it was awesome to show that Mommies and Daddies can love the same way.

Here are some book names. Some I knew. Others I looked up at Barnes and Nobles Bookstore (search under Father and Son - Child Fiction).

Also, many book stores (Barnes and Noble, Borders, Walden) have discount sections. I would also try second hand bookstores if you want to save some cash. Try shopping online through Amazon or a similar place. You can buy books for a dollar or two instead of the $15 price many children's books have.

There was a company that I use to buy books from that would personalize them. I just don't remember the name. They would have the Teacher's name and 2 friends where the story took place in school. One was family oriented. Try googling personalized books.

Mo Willems has some fabulous books, but "Knuffle Bunny" & "Knuffle Bunny Too" have daddies as major characters.

What about Curious George? Not quite between a father and child, but kinda along those lines?

Good luck!
