Lol, another version of this question is on another forum. Over there the kid is 5 and it is the aunt who is appalled at seeing her niece put his shoes on for him because she thinks he's old enough to do it himself. Somehow the concept got fragmented into this train wreck here on MP. And, yea, Julie S is right, this poster is using a lawyer's photo on her profile.

Why were you appalled? It's good for her to try to do things like that, even if she can't yet. How else would she learn?

Elisaa, your post feels strange, I looked at your profile page and then at the Web site you listed as your web site.. The sight looks like it would be helpful for moms. It's a site that gives information. I think I would use it.

I don't know if the site is actually yours or if it's a sight you use. "My Web Site" usually means just that. It is one you use as a part of your business.

If this question is an effort to advertise, you bungled it something awful by asking a question in such a strange way. "Apalled" Appalled has a very negative meaning. It indicates you are upset with her trying to put on her shoes and socks. You laugh about the word in your SWH. This response does not clarify your question.

Perhaps your post is written this way because English is a second language and we've misunderstood the question. Or perhaps your question is strange because you hoped we would look at your website. Which, btw, is unlikely for most of us.

Would you tell us what this question is about? Why it's so strange. If you're really want to know if trying to put on socks and shoes is usual at this age, ask that question. If you're learning English, I might understand the use of appalled. I also would consider that you really were appalled. Perhaps you are new to being around kids and were asking because you thought this may be unusual.

I'm mystified that you were appalled. why would that be your response? Is it that she's doing it wrong? I say encourage independence at every turn, as long as they're staying safe.

Mine didn't put his socks or shoes on until later but he sure did yank them off what felt like every 5 minutes.

You might want to look up the definition of appalled before you use it again in a sentence.

Yes my kids tried to do things themselves. Its called independence. I have always encouraged that in them.

I'm thinking you don't know the meaning of appalled. Surely, this would make you happy that your little one is practicing independence and not horrified or disgusted.

No idea why you would be appalled. Surprised, sure. Horrified or disgusted, no. I don't think I understand. Your SWH says you were "more than happier" (do you mean "more than happy?") when she tries new things, so it sounds like you are pleased, but the question about being appalled confuses me because that implies that you are aghast over it. So I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for here - maybe just making conversation and sharing a surprising moment?

I think kids imitate us more than we imagine. Which is why we have to watch what we say and do. Mine tried to put the keys in the car ignition at 2, and he was definitely on the right track - he was just sitting on my lap while we waited for my husband and before he went into his carseat. That told me how much he had seen just from being in his carseat in the van and looking between the 2 front seats with a good view of the ignition.

Huh??? Why would you be "appalled". That's a negative term. I would think you would like to see a sign of independence.

Per your SWH... Lol.

Also, it's s no-no to attempt to solicit on here. We are not stupid!! Lol

Our son couldn't do it at that age - but he sure could take socks and shoes off pretty instantly!
We didn't really worry about socks/shoes much until he was 3 or so and outside a lot more.
He's always liked having bare feet as much as possible.

Did they want to, yes, did they do it correctly, no. I would let them try and then fix it.

When my kids were that age they could not put socks on properly, but they could put certain shoes on themselves, such as Crocs, flip flops or rubber boots. They LOVED that they could put their shoes on by themselves, and would proudly walk around in rubber boots on a sunny day because they could. I had to help them with socks and runners, but most of the time they preferred the shoes they could slip on.

In under 2 years, she'll be going to preschool and that's a circus! If she wants to try anything on her own, encourage her! And, be proud of yourself for parenting a child who has the self-confidence to try!

My son wanted us to do it for him....he didn't want to do it himself. He had no interest. It was a struggle to get him to do it himself by age 5! Our daughter wanted to as soon as she could...much like your daughter. She wants to do things herself and I have encouraged that as much as I could.
