Buying Ceramic Knives

Greetings, folks. Yes, it's another holiday-based question: My brother suggested that I buy his girlfriend (with whom we exchange gifts but whom I don't know extremely well) some ceramic knives because she loves to cook and would like them.

I'm willing but don't know anything about them. Where should I look, and are these available for less than a fortune? I've seen something like that at Williams-Sonoma and we're talking hundreds of dollars. Is there such a thing for less? What should I look for in these knives? Anything I should know about how they're made or red flags that indicate poor ones?

I'd prefer to go to a real store rather than order online but if you know of web sites, I'd take a look.

Thanks, everyone.

What can I do next?

I don't know if you are a beliver in superstitions, but some believe that giving a knife as a gift will cut the relationship. But, if you want to avoid the bad luck you should either include a penny taped to the blade or if the receiver of the gift believes in superstitions, she should give you a penny in return. I seen a friend give someone a set of knives during Christmas one year and she taped a penny to the knives. She explained the superstition to me, but if you don't care about this sort of stuff don't worry about it. : )

Cuisinart Ceramic Knives - mid-grade, probably fine for what she needs. You can use a 20% off coupon on each item @ Bed Bath and Beyond. They accept expired coupons and competitor's as well. If you don't have a BBB where you live, consider buying from BBB online or look on Amazon. Williams & Sonoma is about the most expensive place there is! Skip it, the quality really isn't that much better. I don't think you have to get her a set. 1 really nice one or 2 moderate ones is plenty. Good cooks do not buy knives in "sets." You buy each one individually to get the qualities you need for the jobs you have in mind. Each person has different preferences so get a gift receipt. Also, BBB is VERY good about returns even after they have been used (in case they don't work out).

Kohls would be a good place to start. And you could use a coupn on them there too.

I've gotten some online before but the ones we got at a Corning outlet while on vacation last summer are just as good and not quite so pricey.
They stay sharp and last a long time.

I don't know a thing about them, but Costco has a set.
