I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a safe, but good bug spray for a 14 month old?
Everyone has been so helpful. I will probably go with the skin so soft. I knew that this was good, but I wasn't sure if it was okay for my one year old. her Doctor even suggest Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, like some of you said, but I can't find it. Thanks again for everyones help.

Hi Kelli,
I am a biologist and my husband and I have worked in Costa Rica and Panama (as well as here in Florida) with a little one in tow, so we have a lot of experience in trying to keep bugs at bay. I have worked in areas with dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever, etc., and have never felt the need to use anything with DEET. I also have never heard of any other biologists using that stuff (too many of us know the side effects, I guess). In any event, the suggestion of Avon Skin-so-soft, made by numerous others is probably the best in that it is both non-toxic and easy to find... with the added bonus that it actually works!! Another alternative is an Aussie brand called Green Ban (which I have only ever seen sold at R.E.I), but it is based on citronella, non-toxic and VERY EFFECTIVE against chiggers, ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. It also works really great for no-see-ums. This is what we used on my son in Panama and it was great. I can't recall a single bite on him... I
I've also used Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, which is DEET-free and very effective, but you should always spray stuff on your hands and then put it on your child's skin. If you did, for some reason, ever choose to use something with DEET, please remember to only spray it on your clothes (outside) and NEVER directly on your skin!! Hope this helps!
Skin so soft by avon makes a few really good and safe bug sprays and even just the Skin so soft moisturizing oil in the original scent makes a good one also. I have also used OFF.
Avon has bug sprays that are safe for the whole family. We use them on our 18-month old, and she never gets bitten.
I haven't tried this myself, yet. The mosquitos just haven't been that bad. But someone told me that if you spray regular Listerine (the mouthwash) in a perimeter around the area you want to use, that it will keep the mosquitos away. Like I say, I haven't tried it myself yet, so I don't know if it really works. But if mosquitos are your concern, then it would be worth a try. If it DOES work, then you might not have to put ANYthing on your 14 month old... Our kids are older and don't stay confined to areas I could treat anymore... they are off on the bikes around the neighborhood these days... (sigh)... I don't know if it does anything at all for sandgnats or horseflies, or any other flying biters...
But, another remedy I have heard and used with some success, is to take a dryer sheet and put it under a hat on your head. My husband has done that with some success while golfing. He said it helped keep even the deerflies away!
Good luck!
K. what are you trying to get rid of? You can stop ants with cinnamon. Try to speak to someone from england. They are not allowed to use poisons so they use natural things. This is how I found out about using cinnamon...it works and for red ants use corn meal and they eat it and exploid
I use the Avon Bug Guard for my girls. It is deet free. They also have sunscreen lotion with Bug Guard. I use that in the backyard when they are playing in the pool. Works for the sun and bugs. We live in South Georgia and have mosquites like birds here. Also I use it (Bug Guard spray) in the fall and winter for the gnats. That is the only thing I have found that works for gnats.
My favorite was Bullfrog Sunscreen and bugspray combination. I was not allergic to it! Neither were my three girls. There's also one they sell at the dollar store...it doesn't have DEET in it, but I can't remember the name. Alternatively, rub her down with a used dryer sheet. If you're looking for a way to stay home with your little girl, let me know. I'll be happy to share what I do from home. Good luck finding a good bug spray!
I would use Skin So Soft from Avon. It works great at preventing but bites and is great for your skin too. Avon has a variety of Bug sprays and skin products that will work great! Hope this helps... C.
Have you tried the Avon Skin So Soft?
It's an old remedy, but usually safe with children, from my experience.
Here's something different, too:

GOOD LUCK!
If you are looking for a natural alternative, look for lemongrass oil in the ingredients list- it really keeps the mosquitos away.
ants, roaches, spiders, flies(a few sprays), gnats, etc.
They all have poison in them. Try a fly swatter.
Spray only when child is not in the room. Never over food or dishes left out. Clean the house inspection clean so buggies don't want your house . Try stickie gluestrips for flyes and ant, roach. mice, rat motels
In Florida NOTHING killsroaches, or water bugs, Once you see them ,it is too late
I too have a young daughter. Last summer she was around 8 months old, and we were going on a camping trip. I was so worried about the bugs, so my in-laws told me about Avon's Skin So Soft. That's what my mother-in-law used on her children growing up. I'll tell you what, it worked! Not one bite. That's what I use now, and it has NEVER failed. I also use it on myself. I think there's one with a sprayer. I would use that one. I have the oil that you just pour into your hands, and it can get messy, but I guess that have on that can be sprayed.
I use Avon's Skin So Soft. You can buy the big bottle and put it in a little pump and spray it on as you need it OR put a little bit in the bathtub. Either way, it WORKS! I use it on myself and on the baby. That stuff is wonderful!
