Broken Window

We had a neighbor boy accidentally break one of the windows at our home. My son and this boy were arguing and the boy said he was trying to kick my son and his shoe (heely) flew off and completely broke our window. The window had been cracked previously by another neighbor girl.

The neighbor has a brother-in-law that will fix the glass, so I doubt he will pay much if anything... but, should I offer to pay half since it was previously cracked?

What can I do next?

I think I would at least mention it and that I was willing to help pay for it. They may just go ahead and pay for it all. Good conscience!

I would offer to pay something. But that is just me.

Obviously, the boy who broke your window while trying to kick your son should be held responsible for his actions. Whether or not it was cracked previously, it apparently was functioning as a window until he BROKE it. The materials to replace a broken (glazed) window pane are about $10 ($5 for glass, $5 for glaze, and maybe a couple bucks for glazing points.)

You should help pay for a new window. If it wasn't previously cracked, maybe it wouldn't have broken.

Hi D.,
I think that would be a very nice gesture, especially since this is your neighbor. You are lucky they can fix it, we just had a a window break and my husband is going to have to replace the whole window! Good luck!

I would say no. I think both boys should help fix the window, but I believe that you are not responsible for paying anything for the broken window. Especially since it was broken while the boy was trying to kick your son. Maybe it will help teach him that violence never solves anything and just makes the problem worse.
