Hi Everyone, I am looking for some good books on the topic of dying loved ones appropriate for kids (in this case a grandparent but it could be about a pet, etc.) . My daughters are ages 6 and 3.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who sent me such wonderful selections to share with my children about losing a grandparent. These will really help in opening up what could be a difficult topic in a very gentle way. Warmly, D.

We didn't get a book when my Dad died last year. we told my son that Grandpa went to heaven and is now an angel. Since we have always called freckles angel kisses, everytime he gets a new freckle it's because grandpa was kissing him.

D., I lost my 6 year old niece 8 yrs ago from a tragic car accident. My sister and brother-in-law gave me a book called The Next Place by Warren Hanson. It is a beautiful book about an inspirational journey and celebration of life. I think it's a book for all ages.

There is a great book written by Maria Shriver about grandparents dying. I cannot remember the title, but someone gave it to my nieces (3) at the time when thier grandmother had died and it seemed to help. I beleive it was one of the first books she wrote, so if you look er books up online you should be able to find it.

Hi D.,

I am a hospice physician new to the area and am happy to help with this. Since I am still unpacking, I will look for my references and send them along to you. Please reply if you are still interested and to remind me to get them to you.

Hi,D.,

The one book that I know of that was good for me and my kids when my mother died last summer(they were 5 and 10 at the time) is a slim but beautiful volume with just a few words, but lovely, freeing drawings and lots of color. I believe it is called "The Next Place I Go". It is not explicitly religious, but it makes death a lot less scary and offers hope.

Good Luck,

N. F.
