Has anyone thrown a great b-day party for their 6 yr old boy recently? We did a pirate theme for his 5th and had a blast...but he's not stuck on any one idea and I'm not feeling very creative this year?! Any suggestions welcome!

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great ideas! I shared them with my son and many of them had recently been done by his friends. SOOO, he decided after watching a commercial for the travel channel to do an Around the World party. We mailed out boarding passes for the invitations, I made passports for each child and we stamped them for each destination. I set up one room to look like an airplane and we watched take off and landing footage. We had an activity and souvenir for each country we visited. A lot of prep work, but not very expensive, and so much fun!

A friend of mine's 6 year old went to a star wars themed party. They made light sabers out of blue pool noodles and then had different games and missions they had to accomplish. I think she had tshirts and certificates they got at the end. It sounded like an awesome party and the mom said she got all the ideas online.

My son will be six soon and he wanted a Toy Story party because he loved the movie so that made it easy but I'm sure that if the movie hadn't come out this summer it probably would have been Spiderman. Perhaps a theme from one of his favorite movies?

We just did sport this summer for my son's 7th. It was pretty easy because i didn't narrow it to just baseball or anything. all the games were sports related. Like limbo under a hockey stick, Pin the baseball players on the diamond. stuff like that. I found clear cellaphane gift bags that the boys decorated with sports stickers and alpha stickers to spell their names and We did a football pinata so they could fill their bags. not the best party i've done but you could jazz it up as much as you want, Rent a popcorn machine, Have your local sports team come by.

LOL - my first thought before I opened your question was pirates!

Depending on the weather, a water party can be fun. You might be able to find clearance items (like beach buckets) right now. Turn on the sprinklers and they are good!

Love the sports idea - we had "baseball" in a local park one year.
Scavenger Hunt, maybe
Dinosaurs or bugs
Ooh, a science party. They can make flubber for instance. http://yucky.discovery.com/noflash/fun_n_games/category_i...

A friend of mine did this for her son this summer: Make a maze all over your yard with colored yarn (this took them the entire afternoon before to set up, lol) Each string is a different color and they all weave in and out of each other, through trees, etc. and lead to a goodie bag with a can of silly string in it.
Each boy got an end of yarn and had to climb all over to unravel his string- then they had a giant silly string fight!

Might be more work than you're up for, but the kids LOVED IT. - they just washed away most of the silly string with the hose later.

We threw a sponge bob birthday party for our son this year and held it at a park. All the kids seemed to have fun. You may want to check out the website for Family Fun Magazine. They ususally have some really good birthday party ideas.

Check out a website called www.birthdaypartyideas.com, they list by theme and have past winners. We did a Star Wars themed birthday this year for my 6yr old. I pulled lots of great ideas from there and did a lot of basic games with a star wars twist, the kids loved it as at this age they are not used to going to a lot of parties at different venues. I would just say that it was a lot of work and I had a lot of kids (19!), so make sure you have extra help! As I just posted to another mom that I found the Dollar Tree to be a great resource for favors, etc and much more ecomomical than a party store. I only really concentrated on themed things for a few decorations and his cake. Just be aware if you find things there to buy them as they may not be available when you return a week later and also there return policy is instore credit only, so make sure you don't overbuy as you can't really return it for cash or back on a credit card.

My son turned 6 last year and wanted a "hot wheels" party. I thought that seemed odd since he wasn't that "in to" his hot wheels any more, but we did it and it was great. Instead of treat bags, I bought a bunch of hot wheels cars and handed them out. (I had a few pink and purple ones for the girls) For decorations we taped streamers on the walls to look like a road and used those plastic cars from the dollar tree and taped them to the wall on the "road". That was a huge hit with everyone. We also played pin the tire on the car (made out of poster board). Good luck with whatever theme you decide on :)

You don't say where you are, but at The Grove in Glenview, they have lots of themes for birthday parties. There is a wild life theme, bugs, Indians, dinosaurs, and a few others. And they're affordable compared to Chuck E. Cheese or bowling. www.thegroveglenview.org is the website. Good luck!

When my nephew turned 7, he had a camping party. They didn't actually sleep outside, it was just the theme of the party. When the kids arrived, they picked up a scavenger hunt sheet and an empty goody bag. They had to use the clues to find their own goody bag items-- play compass, plastic canteen, candy etc. Then the kids did an obstacle course. (Post an adult at each station.) BIL had a canoe. Kids would run to the canoe climb in and then toss a blow up ring around a target. Then they had to use a sling shot and a peanut (in shell) to hit a paper target that was hung up. Next, they had to pack camping type items into a backpack and zip it up. Lastly, they had to fill a canteen with water and then run and pour it in a bucket. The kids were divided into two teams. They ran the course officially twice and luckily each team won once. But after that, the kids kept running it over and over and over. They loved this part of the party. After the obstacle course, they roasted hotdogs. (They had lots of adult supervision.) After eating dinner, serving cake and ice cream, and then opening presents it was starting to get dark. My BIL had put a white sheet on the fence and set up a movie projector using his computer. The kids wound down and watched the movie before going home. They had a big tent set up. The kids ate their dinner in there and played in it throughout the party. My sister heard the kids say more than once that it was the best party they had ever been to! I can't wait to do this party for my son in a few years! Happy Birthday to your little guy! Whatever you do, have fun!
