We just threw a Mad Scientist party for my 5 year old. The kids (and adults) loved it! There's a company called Mad Science who does them too. I think it's $175 - $225 to come out. However, I spent $100 and did it myself. This included everything! ...supplies, goggles, lab coats, party favors, cake, snacks, punch...you name it. I think the 7 year olds will have even more fun with it than the 5 year olds. The experiments we chose were lava lamps, mentos and diet coke, cornstarch and water goo, playing with magnets and various objects that were and weren't magnetic. Testing out what sinks and what floats and rising raisins. Take a look at birthdaypartyideas.com. There are tons of mad scientist ideas and experiments. I bought plain white boys t-shirts for lab coats. Goggles in the dollar bin at Target. Make a volcano cake and smoking punch with dry ice. Save the mentos experiment for the grand finale. The kids LOVED it!!! Send them home with the goggles, lab coats and lava lamps and you won't need party favors. Maybe even index cards with instructions on how to make goo. Anyway, it was a total hit! I think he'd enjoy it. There are some GREAT ideas on the website provided (search under "science"). I was just too lazy to do all of the amazing decoration ideas and didn't have time to do a cool invitation.

Hi T., for my son's 7th birthday party we had a laser tag party. He is now 12 & it was one of the most memorable parties that he had. He STILL talks about it. We rented their party room - but that is not a necessity.
All of the kids (and all of the adults) had a great time!
Not only was it good for them to have fun, but it provided a way for the parents to bond with their children. We played teams also.

Are you in Houston? I would recommend Clint the Snake Man. You can find him on the web. He does a great party. Brings a bunch of really neat snakes and the kids love it! The adults are just as fascinated as the kids are.

There is a man who will bring his snakes to your house for a birthday party. He lets the kids hold them and tells them about snakes and safety, etc. The website is: www.texassnakes.net/party.html
Another idea is a Mad Science birthday party. Again, a "Scientist" from Mad Science comes to your house or a park and teaches about science. The kids all participate in a science experiment. My son liked it when we did it for his 8th. Their website is www.madscience.org.

Hope you have a great party!

The Central Market cooking school does children's cooking parties. The kids can even decorate gingerbread houses. We did fruit kabobs, pizza and cupcakes :) It was PERFECT because they have plenty of staff to run the party and the parents can sit outside and watch through the glass...while enjoying appetizers (or even get their grocery shopping done!)... I purchased little aprons at Hobby Lobby and chef's hats (paint their names on the hats with squeeze paint.) For party favors, give out wooden spoons with a cookie cutter tied on.. EASY!

Just went to a camp out party for a set of brothers 8 and 5. It was fun! Their family invited folks to camp at a state park or come out for the evening (most did the latter) Everyone brought lawn chairs and they did a hot dog roast and cake with a scavenger hunt etc. Camouflage and green was the theme for napkins etc. Flag cake, party favors included brown paper sacks with army stickers and camo pencils and notepads.

We did a "rambo croquet" game (we set up croquet and had the boys wear camouflage and painted faces...the hoops were far enough apart that it was more like playing golf) in the greenbelt behind our home for my son's ninth birthday (also in December) and all the boys (younger and older) had fun. We just made it up and used what we had around. The cake had army guys on it.

Suggestion: take what he likes and just create something around that.

The boys were easily pleased and weren't hung up on details. They have fun with whatever there is to do.

Let us know what you end up doing :)

We had great success with a "Mad Science" party 3 years ago and kids are still talking about it. My niece has a Dec.22 birthday and she had the best attendance at the Galleria skating rink--parents could drop off and do some last minute shopping there (the party was 2 or 3 hours) I also love the idea of snow in your yard- what Texas kid could resist the rare opportunity to play in snow? Add hot cocoa, hot apple cider, maybe fire up the grill for S'mores--fun!

It can be hard to get kids to come to December parties because it's so close to the holidays. Sometimes we'll invite 40 kids and only 4 come.
For my son's 4th we did a cooking party- complete with chef hats & aprons, mini pizzas made with canned biscuit dough, and decorating cookies. For his 5th birthday, they built & painted little wooden cars and played outside. For his 7th birthday, we went with the winter theme- specifically marshmallows. We had so many projects- marshmallow snowmen, a catapult, dot painting, toothpick sculptures. The kids built marshmallow shooters out of pvc pipe, it didn't look like a gun because they decorated with pipe cleaners and stickers.

We just did a in home with 4 hand selected kids, a Star Wars themed party. We got all the 3-d stuff from Partycity and it was so fun! The kids we invited also liked star wars. They took turns playing the star wars video game for a bit, played one of the star wars games I got from partycity and played with all his legos. Then the usual stuff, presents, cake and goodie bags! We all had a GREAT time! When the party was over about 3 hpurs later, one of his friends came back and with the help of dad built a really big high fort in the living room and that friend spent the night! It was the best party we have had yet! Besst of luck party panning yours!

We have several kids on our group that also have winter birthdays. Some things their parent's have done:
- Skating party (this really is a big hit with this age group)
- Pump It Up
- Depending on the weather - putt putt golf

A few friends have had a family birthday party at the time of the birthday and waited until the Spring / Summer for a full blown outdoor friend party.

How about doing a camp out in your own back yard?

Our daughter loved doing this. We borrowed a couple of tents, cooked on the grill and gave flashlights as party favors. The girls loved it. Many of them had never camped out. They brought their sleeping bags and pillows. I slept out side with them, maybe your husband could sleep out with them.

For my son's 4th birthday we had a "snow" party. We got a pickup truck full of "snow" (aka ice) from a local ice company, made a pile in the front yard and got out buckets and shovels and let them play. It was a fairly warm day in Feb. so the ice didn't last forever but was good enough for a 3 hour party. I had a friend make a snow scene cake with evergreen trees made out of waffle cones and snowmen! I took the kids pictures on the snow pile and put them into a snow globe for each of the kids to take home.

Hi T.,

We have also done the snake party mentioned several times here. It was fantastic, and the kids (and parents) loved it. A little costly, but definitely worth it.

Good Luck

My oldest is 19 now and all his parties were all at home but always had a theme. He's birthday is Dec. 23 to make it even it tougher!
I suggest you come up with a theme and build around it. You include the games, decorations, food and all the treats to the same theme. At 7 they need to be entertained with games. Yes, the moonwalks help keep them busy but you need to do activities as a group.
Depending on how creative you can be, you can do a skit with them and incorporate their parents. Depending on the location you can do a scavenger hunt. Theme your party is my best suggestion!

Some themes we have done with all my kids are cowboy (hats, bandanas, cowboy music, sheriff badges) pirates (create their own sailboat with craft items and race them, favors can be swords, eye patches, bandanas or pirate hats) Carnival create booths (from TV or appliance boxes) such as ticket, balloons/dart, fishing, ring toss, do cotton candy and serve hot dogs (dress like a hawker). These are just a couple of ideas but as the host - always dress the part and ask your guests to also come dressed the part. Good luck and have fun!

My son, a May birthday, always does a swimming party. I don't know if there are any indoor ones in this area that you can rent for a party. Schlitterbahn will be open, but it would be very pricey. College of the Mainland's pool is indoor, but I don't know if they rent it out.

One of my son's friends had a January birthday last spring, 7th b-day. He was very into Star Wars. So, the mom got swim noodles, place a pvc pipe in the center to about 1 feet of them end. Taped the other end to look like a handle. The boys had light sabers. They had the best time fighting each other with them. Since the pvc pipe wasn't all the way to the end, they could hit one another and it not hurt. The older sisters threw water balloons at them from 2nd story balcony. They boys had to try to hit them. They even had a moon walk in which the boys fought with their light sabers. My son still plays with his (they each got to bring them home as a party favor).

The mom had gone online to find all sorts of ideas for games, decorations, and food.

T.,
I don't know if he is too young, but last year we did a scavenger hunt b-day party for my little girl turning 9. We had 8 kids.. 4 in each car (mine and my husbands) and we went into local neighborhoods and went door to door. (most people were sitting outside).. asking for stuff. The neighbors truly thought it was the best ever, they had more fun then we had.. and when we got home we pulled out everything each team got.. (4 leaf clover for green, black shirt for black, purple paper plate for purple...etc.) and we did a winner (both teams got a winning prize. Then we did a sleep over. It was the best birthday party we have ever had, and it was cheap.

What about a winter wonderland? Snow flakes, snowmen, pinetrees, etc.
I do not know League City, but maybe you can set something up in your back yard. "sledding" with cardboard boxes down a ramp, marshmallow snowmen treats, look on family fun website. They have lots of ideas.

If your up for the challenge you could set up different hiding shields using big pieces of cardboard and stakes to create a paint balloon party, and have old clothes on hand OR you can create his favorite action figure themed party with homemade costumes, You could also do the skating rink with an ice cream cake...there something about it being cold outside and ice cream that my kids love!!???
