Birth Control Pill - Your Opinion of the Best One

In two weeks, i am scheduled to have the birth control insert - Implanon - taken out. This has pretty much been permanent birth control for the last three years. I'm actually starting to miss the fact that I didn't have a worry, and now I will constantly be thinking "did I take my pill". I am not having another insert put in, as my husband will be having a vasectomy later this summer/early fall and it is not cost effective to spend $1000 (after insurance) for the insert for a short period fo time.

For now though, I am going to be put on the pill. Any opinions out there as to what is best; or what is terrible? I don't want mirena, the patch, diaphram, etc. Just looking for opinions on the PILL. Thanks moms, in advance, for your responses.

I asked a similar question a week ago. Everyone answered IUD or don't take anything. I finally gave up with getting answers and went on my old fall back of Ortho-Tri-Cyclene. I was on it before kids for 10 years and it worked out great. I would rather be on the pill than not even if I didn't have to worry about birth control.

The BEST pill is the one that works for you. I know, doesn't help much. But the thing is, we all react differently to hormones and to different levels of hormones. A person can luck out with one, but it often takes 3-6 months of trial and error to find one that has acceptable side effects.

Your doc will have the best idea, since she/he will have the PDR file on what types and dosing levels your implanon had and find the "matching" oral pill.

Honestly, though, if your glorious hubby is getting fixed you might just want to stick with icky thwibbt condoms + spermacide for the time being. In large part because it usually takes several weeks for the pill to become effective (I honestly don't know if there will be a lag time with your implanon being removed if the oral pills have a lag time, so it's a thing to ask your doc). It's also impetus not to push off the vasectomy forever. Of course, if you plan on staying on the pill (some women get benefit from the hormones, some don't) it's worth the time investment to find the right one.

It is difficult to tell you which pill is the best because, due to a woman's body chemistry, each pill will have pros and cons for different women. Just keep an open mind in that it might take a few cycles and a little trial and error before you find the one that is right for you. For me, Micronor/Errin so far has sucked despite religiously taking it at the same time every day! The pill I used in my early 20s (Lo-Ovral) was absolutely awesome but is not so good for me anymore, after having my two kids. Good luck and don't be afraid to keep at your doctor to get you on one that works well for you.

My experience with Ortho Tri Cyclen was very positive.

I did not like Yaz (caused SEVERE/homicidal pms), and LoEstrin (also called Junel) gave me extremely erratic periods.

My fav birth control method ever was the depo shot. I have only used one type of 'pill' birth control and it was Seasonique. I had no weight gain, no spotting PLUS only 1 period every 3 months!!

Ortho Tri Cyclen made me very sick (vomiting), so it's not ideal for everyone. Honestly, the best pill is the one selected by your doctor as being most suitable for you. They all vary slightly. I've been on a lot of different ones over the years as my body and medical needs have changed. I can honestly say one wasn't better over the other -- the one that worked well for me at the time was the best. I would let your doctor take the lead on this one.

Have you looked into fertility charting? It's a great short-term (or long term) option that doesn't pump you full of artificial hormones. PM me if you want info.

Also, are you taking into consideration that you have to continue to use birth control for about 6 months after he gets snipped? So it's not as short term as just until he gets snipped:) I have a friend who got pregnant after her husband was snipped...oops...

Good Luck!

I just started the Nuva Ring which is the same as birth control, but you don't have to worry about taking the pill everyday. It is a small jelly ring that you insert yourself and leave in for 3 weeks. I have been on the pill off and on for 10 years and this birth control type is amazing.
