Bedwetting Alarms

I'd like to help my son stop his bedwetting. He's wearing Overnites every night and wakes up with them absolutely soaked. He's 6 years old and I didn't think it was really a problem. Now, though with his little brother staying dry all night, he's asked for help with this. I know I need to take him to get a check up to rule out any medical problems, but I wanted to get him an alarm to help him at night. Any suggestions about which alarms work best, don't stay put, require extra pads or others that I'm not thinking of?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We purchased the Malem Ultimate alarm for Alex. So far, so good. He's used it two nights now and it's a great tool to also determine how much he goes at night. It's been just one time each night, but each time he's been waking up to the alarm. It hasn't stopped him from emptying his bladder, but I think it's going to work in the general ideas of re-training his brain to wake up before he has to go.

We are committed to helping him stay dry at night. He's excited about wearing underwear and so far loves it.

One thing that I didn't know before I got all this help was that bedwetters sometimes have dreams that they are going to the bathroom. In reality, they are! So, every night I also tell Alex that if he has a dream, that he needs to tell himself that he should wake up and go to the potty for real. One of these nights, it'll sink in. I have faith!

For anybody considering alarms, the Malem Ultimate that I got is easy to use and works well, so far. I keep my monitor on so that I can hear when it goes off and I can go help Alex. It's pretty loud as well, and vibrates and has a light. Who wouldn't wake up?? Anyway, with sheet protectors and lots of laundry soap, we'll get through this and get him the help he wants.

Thanks for all of your responses.

I had a problem with bed-wetting until I was about 8 or 9. I had an alarm, but I was such a heavy sleeper that I would not wake up for the alarm but the rest of the house would. I don't know if the alarm is what helped me or if I just grew out of it.
Ask him if he remembers any dreams from before/during the bed-wetting. I have "trigger dreams" where I am looking for the restroom, and when I find it and go pee in my dream I would go in real life. I trained myself to wake up when the dreams would start and I had a very strong urge to go to the restroom. I still get the dreams but don't have accidents anymore.
Good luck. I know it's hard on him. Do what you can to make sure that he doesn't have any self-confidence issues because of this.

I have a 6 year old that did the exact same thing. Everynight before bed-time at least 1 hour dont let him have anymore drinks make sure he uses the restroom before bedtime.my son use to tell me he didnt have to go,but then i would tell him to try and he did. Just make sure he doesn't have a drink at least an hour before bed.if that doesn't work try an hour and a half so he could drain his bladder out.

It sounds like your son may have a condition known as primary nocturnal enuresis. It's a condition where bed-wetting can last years. It's common and my husband, who is 27, has it as well as secondary nocturnal enuresis which strikes in adulthood. These conditions run in his family, and you might want to ask family members if they have had the same problem. We've found in our case that the best treatment was to take wheat and sugar out of his diet. While that does seem a bit extreme, it worked well. I know of a clinic in Florida that treats people all over the world via the web and they are the Enuresis Treatment Clinic. Their website is http://www.drybed.com/index.html. I've heard bad things about alarms and keeping them from fluids late in the evening and trying to wake yourself up at night to go to the bathroom. If altering his diet doesn't work, you may want to contact this clinic. My son is only three so I have yet to see if he has this problem as well, but I'm going to keep my eye out. If this isn't the case, and it does just go away when he gets older, then that's great. If not, then I hope this helps.

Alot of kids wet the bed till they are much older.... more than you'd think.

There are meds that can help, so do ask the doctor.

But the best site I've found and used is

www.bedwettingstore.com

The best alarm is the Malem, sound and vibration.

Good luck!

My sister wet the bed alot, she was a very hard sleeper we couldnt wake her up not even with a alarm, so her pedi at the time told my mom to get her some homeopathic pills from a sunharvest, my mom said she thinks they are called eniurine (sp?) but im sure you could call a local store in your area that carries stuff like that and ask them about the pills you put under your tongue and they disolve for bed wetting. My mom said they also carry them at some vitamin stores (although GNC doenst carry them). Good luck and i hope this helps both of yall.

I think what he is going through is very normal for boys but I understand your desire to help him.

In my opinion, bed alarms do not work. By the time they go off it is too late. My mom went through all of this with my little brother and used anything and everything that she could find. She swears bed alarms are a waste of money. In the end, nothing worked other than just waiting for him to mature. He was about 8 when he finally out grew it.
