At What Age Are "Accidents" Still Normal?

Hi Moms,

My son has been night potty trained since he was 2 1/2. He has been daytime trained since he turned 3 and is now 4 1/2. He has had 2 or 3 night accidents since that time and today for the first time in 1 1/2 years he had an accident at a birthday party. He was having such a great time playing that all of sudden he grabbed himself and peed right there on the grass. I was a little embarrassed but changed him quickly in the car and brought him back. Is it ok to have an accident at 4 1/2 having been trained for a year and a 1/2? If so, until what age is it o.k?

What can I do next?

We weren't completely accident free until close to around 5 years old with both of my boys.
My third is 3 and nowhere near even being able to wear panties yet.
It's all about physical maturity and the connection of brain to bladder.
Some kids take longer to mature than others.

My kiddo is starting 1st grade next week. She had at least 4 accidents in 5K outside at recess. They sent the kids to the bathroom right before lunch and then they go outside. Mine would go IN the bathroom, but not use the bathroom. I had to start telling her every day she needs to try going every time they send her, no matter what. After I would stop telling her for awhile, she would have an accident.

My friend's daughter is 8 and just had one the other day at chuck e cheese. She waiting too long to go and couldn't get her undies down in time. You've got years of accidents ahead of you yet. :)

He had one accident in a year and a half? Yes, he's "OK".

I'm not sure what you mean by "is it OK?" It happened. What would you do about it after a certain age cut-off? If this began happening frequently, like almost daily, at this age, I would take him to a doctor. As it is, I doubt this will happen again, but if it does, have him change and get back in the game.

We can not be embarrassed by what our children do, at any age. Just deal with it and move on.

Yes - I think sometimes they get so "caught up" with whatever is going on, that they keep thinking to themselves that they can wait, and then it just happens. He's normal. If he's still doing it at 6, I'd be more concerned.

Teachers will tell you it happens often in Kindergarten (esp at recess) and occasionally in First grade.

That's normal. Actually, it happens more often after a couple years, because kids get DISTRACTED and just forget to pee/ don't realize they need to go until too late OR need to go but not badly... Then LAUGH, or get scared (boo!), or tickled (even for just a second, not cruel tickling)... And whoops.

I think it is normal at that age to have an occasional accident.
