Hi ladies...
So my 1st grader, who's been successfully pottytrained since the age of 2.5, had a little #1 accident in school today, during recess... He's very aware of anytime he needs to go pee or poo, never had accidents and is actually pretty good at 'holding it' when he needs to.... sleeps throught the night... i'm sure it was because he was playing and forgot... But is that normal?? does that still happen at his age??? i cant help but be concerned a bit... should i be concerned??? cant help but feel sad for him :(

What can I do next?

An accident is just that, an accident. I wouldn't even give it a second thought unless it happens again. I'm 42, and while I haven't actually peed my pants I have come pretty close when I have tried to hold it too long. Don't make a big deal about it because then he'll be even more embarrassed.

When I taught 3rd grade, I had a boy pee his pants while waiting in line to go into the bathroom (we only allowed 3 at a time into the restroom). Sometimes they just wait till the last minute and can't hold it any longer. Also - is it possible that the teacher said "No, you may not go now. Wait till recess is over." ??

Occasional-to-infrequent accidents are normal up until children turn 7 years old. Nothing to be shocked over. Their bladders muscles and all of the other muscles involved in "holding it" are still immature. Plus, you just said "ON THE PLAYGROUND." He may have been too busy to notice until it was a little too late to get to a bathroom in time. It happens and it's normal.

In first grade they have busy little social lives. He may have skipped a potty break and hung out with his friends...then things got away from him. Unless he is complaining of a problem or it happens again, I wouldn't worry.

Haven't you ever waited too long and then realized you have to sneeze?!

He probably thought he could hold it a little longer so he wouldn't have to go at recess. Totally normal. If he was 14 and doing this I would say no--but hes around 6/7 right?

bathrooms can be scary at school and many kids hold it all day. My 2 are both sensitive to bathroom issues. Sorry this happened to him. Reassure him that is pretty common and find out what he has to say about why it happened. Some older teachers sometimes make life difficult for kids by not allowing them to go when they need to or by asking them in front of everyone why it took so long (and they were pooping!).

Are yhou sure that he felt that he could go into the bathroom? If he hasn't done it before he might feel a little unsure of if he is allowed to or can leave recess for the potty. Or he was just having too much fun to leave -what does he say??

Ask your mom if you ever had an accident. Ask your MIL if your husband ever had an accident. Or if the sibs ever had them. I'll bet you'll get an earful.

Then let it go. Of course it's normal.

This is so normal. I've had accidents as an adult when I was too involved to pay attention to my body or when I couldn't find a rest room. So, accidents happen. I wouldn't be concerned.

my daughter wet the bed this year (in 1st grade too) all of a sudden for the first time since 2 1/2 as well. one time thing and she was/is fine. i'd J. keep an eye out for signs of a uti and assume he was J. playing. i'm sure that will be reminder enough for him to not do it again

Im sure he was having fun and didnt want to go potty. He knows he can hold it, thought he could, and well he couldnt. Still just keep an eye on him to see if he is showing any symptoms of a UTI but my bet is that he wasnt wanting to lose recess time (what is it now a days a whoppin 10-15 minutes) to use the bathroom.

It is normal. I don't think he "forgot." You can't really "forget" the feeling of having to go to the bathroom really bad. I think it was a matter of not wanting to stop doing what he was doing and he just pushed the envelope a little too far. Don't be concerned. I would just about bet he won't do it again!

Poor guy! He probably just forgot to go before they went outside, or decided he'd rather not waste his recess in the bathroom. I peed my pants once in the second grade on a field trip because I didn't know where the bathrooms were and was too shy to ask. Maybe go over with him what to do if he needs to use the bathroom during recess. First graders are still very new to the school and procedures. Give him some extra hugs (and ice cream) tonight!

All my kids had potty accidents in KG and 1st grades. Very normal...ditto Momwithcamera...they just get too busy and involved and ignore what their body is telling them until it's too late.

My son's both did that about that age. They didn't want to stop playing and go in a pee so they just held it so long they couldn't hold it any longer. It's fairly normal but you need to let him know it does not matter what he's doing he needs to go in when he feels he has to go NOT to hold it.

I totally peed my pants once in 1st grade! Only time I ever did in school before or after. It happens.
