Anyone Have Experience with Fibroid Tumors During Pregnancy?

My friend is 16 weeks pregnant and just found out she has a large, rapidly growing fibroid tumor. The tumor has grown to 9 cm already and the doc says it is bigger than the baby. She has been experiencing abdominal pain and frequent urination. This is her first pregnancy and she is really scared now. Her doctor thought she was pregnant with twins b/c of the size of the tumor. I would appreciate any thoughts or encouragement that I can pass on to her. :) Thank you!

Dear L.:

Fibroids can be disolved. During pregnancy it is more difficult and best to wait but in some cases you can't. If the fibroids grow to big the C section is the only choice. If she is interested in more info she can email me direct at ____@____.com or go to anatomystery.com

Good Luck

Just happened to be sitting here when your msg. came across...Fibroids are different (like pregnancies) for everyone. My experience was a good one - relatively speaking. I had 2 large fibroids that sat diagonally from each other on my uterus. They grew HUGE with my pregnancies (one maxed out at the size of a grapefruit, the other a cantaloupe!!) They do cause one to feel uncomfortable - especially in the beginning as they are growing/taking in blood etc. I even experienced morning-sickness like symptoms at times (frequent urination is common too). I always looked a good 6-8 weeks more pregnant than I was due to my size. :( I went on to vaginally deliver 4 times with zero complications. Tell your friend to just relax and they usually don't cause more trouble than occasional pain and discomfort. Walking, exercising etc. helps as well. Best of luck to her!

I also had fibroids (many!) during my pregnancy. Make sure that you are closely watched. Overall I had no problems, except I had to have a c-section. From the beginning we knew that one was very close to the birth canal.Yes they will grow as your hormones change.
After my son was born and I was finished breastfeeding I took medicine for 3 months to shrink the fibroids and then had surgery to have 7 removed.
If she has any questions I recommend that she talks to a specialist. They will be able to answer her questions wisely.
Hopefully all will go well but be there for her if anything tragic happens.Fibroids are not to be taking lightly.
Best wishes for her
K.

I also had a tumor, it started out the size of a golf ball then grew to the size of a grapefruit. I don't want to scare you but I had my baby prematurely at 26 weeks....they don't know that w/the size of the fibroid my uterus didn't know it wasn't the baby, so the baby came early. I would suggest she be monitored very closely, (I was not) She is still early in her preganancy, maybe bedrest too. (I was not put on bedrest) Email me if you have any other questions. ____@____.com
