Hey! I was just wondering if any moms out there are having weird side effects of the Mirena IUD a year or more after getting it put in? I didn't get my period for about 16 months after I got it in, and now all of a sudden I am getting what seems to be my period, but instead of blood it's more of a gray-brown. I can feel my IUD in place, but I am a little freaked out about why I would all of a sudden start getting my period back.

So What Happened?

I need to go to the doc anyway for a checkup, and I think when I go I am going to get the IUD out and maybe get on the pill or something. I read somewhere on one of the responses that basically I could be getting pregnant every month and essentially aborting the baby! That sucks for me, because I am SUPER pro-life! Anyway, I will let you all know what the doctor says!

i have the IUD for a little more than a year. I didnt have my period for about 9 months and then I would have it for 3-5 weeks at a time. Just enough to make ya mad but still for up to 5 weeks at a time.

I then started having horrible back pain, my attitude was was over they top. My husband called it poor little M. act. My kids were scared to do something wrong around me or even talk because i was on edge all the time.

I had bad hot flashes worse then my mother inlaw who is going threw " the change " I finaly had the darn this taken out Sept.20, 2006 and the very next daymost of the things cleared up, but it took till Dec. around Christmas for the hot flashes and by then I was already pregnant again so didnt matter anyways lol

There are actual IUD groups on the web you can join as questions etc.

Good luck

I've had mine for 19 months now. Had a few periods at the beginning, some were much heavier than usual and longer lasting too (7-9 days), but I haven't had an actual period for about 5 months now. I know this is personal, but I constantly have clear discharge and it's so annoying! And sometimes I do have light brownish discharge or light pink, thinking my period is about to start but it never does. My OBGYN said it's normal though so not to worry.

I have had mine for a little over 2 years. For about the first 6ish months, I had NO PERIODS! it was great! Then it all changed. After that, I started getting a monthly period. It wasn't really regular because it was every other week! Then, it was just once a month, but it has been heavier than ever. It usually lasts for 7-8 days when I used to have it for only 3 days. I am going to the dr to have it checked out and i would suggest you do the same. There can be so many things that go wrong with these things. Just make sure it hasn't become attaced to you on the inside. Good luck and let us know what happens! =)

The iud was designed to stimulate a period every month by keeping the uterine lining irritated enough to slough off whetere there was a implanted ovum or not.

With the introduction of hormones in it there is a greater chance that you won't ovulate at all therefore not needing the sloughing to abort a fertilized ovum.

However it's far more likely that your ovaries have taken the time off on their own and when you decide to try again it's far more likely that you'll need help to get pregnant.

Many things can keep you from ovulating, extra weight left over from pregnancy, stress and hormonal imbalances like thyroid and diabetes (I can specify these because the affect me every month) You can be just fine not having a period every months as long as you aren't on a birthcontrol method that makes you have one every month.

The sludge you experienced can be from when you have a long time between periods and that may be all you have this month and get back to normal next month. And it can also be a side effect of thyroid problems where your vaginal wall bleeds but doesn't "empty out" soon enough for you to see the bright red blood. To know for sure you should see your gynocologist.

I had the Mirena for 3 years and loved it. Nothing ever strange happened that far into having it. I had some spotting for a couple of weeks right after they put it in but that's it. I never had a period the entire time. I plan on getting it again. I have had friends that their body just didn't like it and they ended up getting it taken out, so I think it just depends on the person. I would ask my doc if I had some problems with it. Good luck!

I had the Mirena for about a 1 1/2 years. At first I loved it but I started bleeding a lot during periods. At the end I had a period for about 8wks and had to have a d&c and have it removed. I never experienced a loss of period but my docter told me that is normal but why it would start back after not having one is weird.

I have an IUD though not Mirena. I have only had it for about 5 months but am completely satisfied with it. I have periods and a little added cramps but couldn't be happier. I think you should probably call your doctor and check to see if these things are normal..

I have a Mirena IUD. I had the procedure in June 2006. I have not had a period since but I had a couple of days spotting. I can feel it when my husband and I have sex on occation. the Dr. told me I shouldn't but I do. My husband has issues with the string. The Dr. said it would eventually soften and he wouldn't feel it anymore. She gave me estrogen gel to apply to help soften it but I have been leary to use it. I feel confident it is in place and safe and I'll admit I love not having a period. OH, my light period that I had was a gray-brown color too.

Good luck, E.

Raising my hand, too. I still get regular, very light periods with darker, brownish blood. I was actually going to ask my OB about this next week at my yearly exam. Sounds like it's not a biggie since some of the other gals mentioned some brown spotting, as well.

i have had the mirena IUD in for four years this March. i experienced the same thing. i asked the doctor about it and she said it happens that way for some women. i probably had four or five lite periods total in the last four years until three monthes ago, i had "normal" ones the last two monthes and then nothing so far the month of february. it always made me curious because i thought it couldnt be healthy to not have my periods but i guess im healthy (except for being mentally unstable once a month) so its okay that i only have to buy tampons once every six months!!

I have had mine for a little over a year. I spot once in a while with it. Usually that only happens if I have done some heavy lifting or other strenuous activities that have put a strain on my abdominal muscles. Other than that I haven't had any other problems. Did you r physical activities recently change?

K. I have one too.... I've never lost my period with mine...It comes every month..It's just shorter...The only timeI have the brownish coloring is towards the end of it! Maybe you should check back with your Obgyn just to make sure everything is ok with it!

I have had mine since May 2006 - so not quite a year...

I have never had any "side-effects" other than my period being quite heavy for the first 6-7 months... it seems like my periods keep getting lighter and lighter everytime... which is nice. I would say that you should go talk to your doctor about it... that seems a little strange - I have heard of other women not having their period at all with it (all though that isnt the case with me...) - but I have never heard of women getting their period "back" and it being a wierd color... you should deffinately speak to a professional about it.

I have had my Mirena for almost 2 years. I have not had any problems on it. I would told I would probably have light periods on it. I have some sort of spotting about every 3 weeks. Sometimes it is heavy enough to need a pad, sometimes not. I have never had anything as heavy as a normal period. What you are experiencing sounds pretty normal to me.
Oh BTW while there is a small chance of conception with the IUD, with the Mirena there is an especially small chance b/c of the progestin. With the pill if conception occurs the lining is not thick enough to support it either in most cases.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to comment on it as well...
I have had mine in for just over a year now. I can't say I love it, but it sure does beat paying $30/month for the patch.
I still get regular-monthly periods. Some do last between 7 to 8 days, others only last 3 or 4. Glad to know that I'm not the only one though because I was beginning to wonder.
Side effects? Yes, some... weight gain and acne problems. I guess its just gonna be something that I have to keep debating (having it removed, go back to the patch... keeping it in and dealing w/ it!)

I had the Mirena IUD for almost 4 years. Just because you have the IUD doesn't mean that you won't have periods. Usually if you do have periods they are lighter than normal. It was pretty common for me to have a period once every 6 months or so. Usually not much more than spotting, but it is common. If you are concerned it is always best to check with your doctor but nothing you described sounds abnormal to me.

I just had my Mirena removed after almost 5 years.

http://www.aippg.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24435&post...

There have been A LOT of negative side effects from Mirena. If you do a search on it, you'll find most people who have it don't like it... there are fewer women with good experiances. I did not have possitive experiances at all, everything from acne, to weight gain to mood swings that put my marriage in jeopardy. I could go on and on about how it affected me, and what my doctor told me when I had it removed, but I don't really have time to go into it. Check out that site, and just do a general search about mirena side effects and what not... There is a class action lawsuit being filed as we speak against the makers of Mirena. Just do some research on it!! Make an informed decision not based on what your doctor says because most doctors either don't really know, and are just going by what the makers say, or they don't care because they get good money by continuing to give them to women. Not every woman has a bad experiance with it, but you might be surprised at how many do. Just decide for yourself. And I hope you have good experiances with it. Good Luck.
