Any Stories or Suggestions About C-sections at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston?

I am going to have a C-Section in July and am looking for a care provider. My primary care strongly suggested Beth Israel as the hospital for me to go to and is going to give me a few names after he researches a couple doctors for me but in the meantime I wanted to know if anybody had any suggestions for doctors that deliver there and wondered if anybody would mind sharing their experiences if they had a child there.

* To answer a question yes I had a C-Section two years ago with my daughter. Due to several serious back injuries I have they strongly suggested that I not risk a natural child birth unfortunately. I kind of regret it in hindsight but my former obgyn went to say everything from they'd have to break her shoulder to get her out because she was so big (she wasn't she was teeny) to if you were my wife i would never let you have a natural birth to if you try to have this baby naturally you run the risk of re injuring your spine. All kinds of crazy things. At the time I just continued wanting to do it naturally but we went through so many problems near the end including preeclampsia that went misdiagnosed to many other things that I finally relented and had a C-section after all.

Hi C.,
I've had 2 C-sections, both at Beth Israel. The first one was unplanned (emergency C-section), the second one was planned, due to not wanting to go through the nightmare of the first labor experience. Beth Israel was great, I had two different doctors for each one, but barely have a scar to speak of. Both Dr's. were associated with Harvard Vanguard. The other bonus about Beth Israel is that they have a NICU on site (which we all hope is never needed!)
Please remember that the decision to have a C-section is yours, and don't let anyone make you feel bad for going that route. You know what's right given your past health history. The most important thing is the end, a healthy beautiful baby! Best of luck to you, and if you have any more questions, feel free to email me!

I had a great experience at Beth Israel with Sandy Mason. I had a scheduled c-section, for medical reasons, and found her and all of the nurses, etc. to be incredibly attentive, positive and caring. I cannot recommend Dr. Mason highly enough. Good luck!

Dr. Atkins seems great. She was not my ob but was part of the same group of ob's that my ob was in, so I saw her a couple of times (once because my ob was on vacation and once during the many hours of delivery). She seemed very on top of things and very caring. If I were to have a second child, I would seek her out.

I had a c-section at BI 3+ years ago. Great experience. My doc was Dr. Yum. Great surgeon, and person.

I have not had a C-section at Beth Israel, but I did deliver my son there last December, and it was a fabulous experience. The staff was incredible. I felt like ALL the nurses were extremely competent, honest, open, helpful, supportive and just went above and beyond. We truly had a great experience from the moment we arrived. I am currently pregnant again and using the same OB (he did not deliver b/c he was not on call the day I went into labor, but the doctor covering was fabulous as well!), Dr. Todd Shapiro. His staff is very helpful and great as well. Please e-mail me if you have any other questions: ____@____.com

I had 2 c-sections there -- my first was an emergency, the second was scheduled, but I went into labor 2 weeks before the scheduled surgery, so I've seen a bunch of different docs at BI. They are all wonderful. I've had an excellent experience with both pregnancies/births there. I would highly recommend Dr. Diane Kaufman (she's in chestnut hill, so it may be a hike) she delivered my first (emergency c-section) and was wonderful, especially under the tense circumstances. I saw her throughout my second pregnancy and she took excellent care of me (I was delivered by another doctor with the secons one since I went into labor 3 weeks before my due date).
