Does anyone have a good recommendation for an OB/GYN in or near Reston, VA? I am looking for a doctor who has good communication skills and is an advocate of VBACs.

What can I do next?

I recommend Women's Physicians of Northern Virginia, http://www.womenphysicians.org/classes.html.
They are great and recently delivered my daughter.
Good luck!

Dr Terry Allen (woman) and Dr Scott Forrest - they are WONDERFUL! The care and attention they give me is beyond the call of duty. When my daughter was born, I labored for 15 hours and ultimately had a c-section because my daughter was obviously stuck and in distress. Dr Allen should have gone off shift but stayed with me the entire time, and assisted Dr Forrest on my extremely difficult "c-section from hell" (as we all came to call it) since my pregnancy and labor had not been easy. Other docs would have left at shift change... not her! Here is their website: www.drsallenandforrest.com. They are in Fairfax City near the 50/236/29 intersection- worth the drive in my opinion (I come from Gainesville!)

Dr Allen and I have discussed VBAC for my next child. Since my C-section was so terrible, we are leaving the option open for the possiblity of having to do another C-section, but I know she will work with me no matter what I decide and guide me to a safe delivery.

Good luck!
M.

For years and years I've used Dr. Candace Thurston of Women Physicians of Northern Virginia. They have a Reston office as well as one in Fairfax. They're a fairly small practice and I have had good experiences with them, even when seeing doctors other than Dr. Thurston. Even when our health insurance didn't include her practice, I continued to see Dr. Thurston "on the side" to maintain the relationship until our insurance changed just in time for me to get through pregnancy and delivery with her. Dr. T. delivered my daughter and did so much to make my pregnancy and delivery (all natural, no c-section, no epidural, etc.) as smooth as possible. She even gave me a choice of about three hospitals for the delivery so we got to visit them and choose one that felt most comfortable for us! She also is always willing to listen to questions and never has made me feel dumb for asking anything, however small. I have fibrocystyic breasts and they have been very helpful and reassuring with that condition too--I sometimes panic and dash in when in pain and they never act as if I'm silly to do so! Good luck in your search.

I love my OBGYN. I had TWO c-sections and then a VBAC. It was awesome. It is a group of women Dr.s Women's Physicians of Northern VA is the name of the group. ###-###-####. They have offices in Reston and Fairfax. They ONLY deliver at Reston Hospital though. I don't know if that matters. My other experience is that all three Dr.s circumcise with different methods of anesthesia and also, if you happen to have another C-section (I'm assuming you have had one) remember to discuss with the Dr. weather or not they sew your stomach muscles back together. I did research and found that not all do!! In that office though I believe they all favor it. Hope that helps!

Hi J. -

I use Women First in Reston - they also have a Sterling office. There are 3 doctors in the practice, and they are all great. I just had my first baby in January (c-section), and everything went smoothly. They did not pressure me to have a c-section, but it turned out I had to have one after I went into labor. I'm sure they would advocate VBAC if it was safe for you. I actually switched to them in my 6th month of pregnancy b/c the previous OB seemed to be pushing me towards a c-section and was giving what I thought was less than adequate care. This was Dr. Varma of Women's Care Group - I definitely DO NOT recommend her office. They are constantly short-staffed and can't seem to keep doctors (or patients, for that matter). The doctors at Women First have delivery rights at Reston and Loudoun. I've been really thrilled with the care I've received from them.

I cannot recommend Supriya Varma any higher. I credit her for saving my 2 daughters because I had lots of issues in my pregnancy. She works out of the Reston Hospital (the building next to the hospital. She is really friendly, takes a LOT of time with you and you never feel rushed. She takes time to see how we are DOING not just how we are feeling.
I ABSOLUTELY love her. She is incredibly smart and is from a family of docs too. She is amazing. If you try her, please tell her J. Kopp sent u. She is fabulous!

I would encourage you to look into ICAN of Northern Virginia. The international cesarean awareness network supports women in exactly your situation. Unfortunately, with Reston's almost 70% cesarean rate, I'm not sure that you'll find anyone who is supportive of VBAC. There are options, in the area, however, so I'd encourage you to visit www.icanofnova.org for more information!

I also recommend Women Physicians of Northern Virginia, who delivered my 4 year old and 3 month old by vaginal delivery. There are 4 women in the practice who I believe are great practicionners - as in any practice, they vary in their interpersonal styles. I found Dr Razul and Dr. Mazari (spelling??) to be the easiest to talk to and the most forthcoming/open om discussion. They encourage you to work with all the doctors during your OB experience. The nurses are really nice.

I love my OB/GYN office. They are not in Reston, but they are in Fairfax. On Route 50 near Fairoaks Hospital. They are called, Greenbriar OB/GYN and there are 3 doctors. I love all of them. 2 of the doctors have delivered my children and I think the world of them. I got a reference from some people who work in the hospital (thinking they'd know who is good to work with and who does a good job) and then found out my friend was a patient. It sealed the deal and I've been very happy since.

Good luck. I know it is important to find people you trust. I'm not sure about the VBACs. Not an issue for me. You'll have to call and find out. ###-###-####

Take care,

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Jane Piness. She is located in Arlington and works out of Va. Hospital Center. It is about a 30 minute drive, but for me- totally worth it. She literally saved my life and walked me through a very difficult first pregnancy (she came in on her day off to deliver my son!) a breast cancer diagnosis (while I was pregnant!) and then a second pregnancy, along with other health issues and surgeries. Don't know about VBAC- not an issue for me. Good luck!

DO NOT USE

OB/GYN Associates of Northern Virginia

NOT WILLING TO HELP! What kind of doctor's office makes a pointed effort to deter a patient from using their service? I called ###-###-#### to get an appointment for my 3 month pregnant wife. I said that it could be a one-time appointment because we might be moving to another area. The receptionist put me on hold then came back to say they don't do one-time appointments. (What?) Then she said that if the doctor's saw me, due to my wife being in her 2nd trimester that the doctor would be legally responsible. (What?) I asked, "what law is that?" The receptionist put me on hold again, then came back and said the doctor would see my wife for one appointment that would cost $900. (What?) So I guess Northern Virginia OB-GYN Associates is all about the money.

I have to second the vote for Greenbriar OB/GYN. I go to Dr. Pickford (woman) and there are two men doctors there that friends have raved about. She did my VBAC and was very, very supportive of my desire to avoid a repeat c-section unless it was a *true* emergency. They are located across from Fair Oaks Mall, their number is ###-###-####, and they deliver at Fair Oaks Hospital. Before them, I went a couple of times to Women Physicians of Nova in Reston until the Dr. I met with laid into me for 15 minutes all the reasons I should have all my babies via scheduled cesarean. She even went so far as to say something was probably wrong with my body and I probably couldn't even have a vaginal delivery! She was wrong as I had my next baby vaginally! I decided then that this wasn't the practice for me. If that doctor had been the one on call when I went into labor, I'm sure I would have ended up with another c-section. Also, Reston Hospital has one of the highest c-section rate in the whole area, so I'm sure it's doctors like her that push up that rate.
