Hello MaMas
My 30 years old nanny has had very bad case of Premenstrual/menstrual symptoms such as severe cramps and depression (being excessively emotional) during/before her periods, etc. She has seen two OB-GYNs thus far and the first doc. put her on a regular birth control pill to reduce her menstrual cramps, but the pill made her even more depressed/emotional, so went for the second doc who switched her to low dose birth control pills which worked for her for a couple of months, but from the third month on, she is again experiencing emotional side effects of birth control pills. She really hopes to find a doctor who can help her better with different treatment than taking birth control pills. Will appreciate your recommendations for a good OB-GYN in Los Angeles area who may be specializing in reducing PMS/MS pains and/or if you have any good suggestions how to deal with this physiological problem, I will pass along to my nanny.
Thank you very much in advance!

I have this same exact issue. I went to every doctor you can think of--obgyn, psychiatrist, nuerologist, etc. I also get really bad migraines around that time of the month. What ended up helping me is an antidepressant low dose taken every day and the nuva ring. The nuva ring has the lowest dose of hormones, lower than the pill, and it really helps regulate hormone levels so the depression issues don't get so low during that time. It's still a struggle because most doctors are dismissive. PMDD is a recognized disorder.

it would be a cinch for professional homeopath to help her. as a side note - i'm appalled by the treatment she has gotten so far. i hope she has insurance and did not have to pay her own $$$ for this kind of "care". she can also try free clinic in the acupuncture schools.
Good Luck

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are wonderful and very effective at treating PMS symptoms. LA has tons of acupuncturists, so try and find a referral and have your nanny give it a shot!

I also had that experience for 17 years- until 3 years ago. I tried everything for the cramps, birth control pills, even natural methods like herbs, extracts, yoga, breathing, meditation, changing my diet. Nothing worked consistently until I found therapeutic-grade essential oils by Young Living. Here's what happened to me: http://www.oil-testimonials.com/essential-oils/1149
Just last year I got rid of my menstrual issues for good and don't even need the essential oils. How? Email me and I'll send you the info.

I wish you and your nanny the best.

I suffered with PMS for years. I found that supplementing with Omega-3 and B-Complex worked some of the time, but it wasn't until I began supplementing with 400mg magnesium (originally for better calcium absorption), that I noticed a huge change in my mood swings. It turns out that many women who suffer from PMS have low magnesium and calcium levels. If her diet is also lacking in calcium (little or no dairy), she can also use a combination mag/cal supplement.
