I Go Crazy During 'That Time of the Month'

You know, I'm just pissed off.
I'm angry and I yell at my kids. Yep, it pretty much sucks.

Not all the time mind you, three weeks of the month I am a really good mom. I even get a lot of, "wow! you have wicked mom skills" compliments.

But not now. I beat myself up in my own mind, my kids are too loud and NO ONE listens. I mean it's like I'm not even talking. I get so angry. About one week a month that is.

I need some help. I would like diet, nutrition or herb resource information. Books? But I might need a prescription for something to lift me up during this time - it seems to be getting worse. My kids are still young - boy is almost 4, girl is 7. I'm 43.

Dad is a great help and is willing to do more - but he does work two jobs.
I don't have family to lean on nearby.
Friends all have 2 kids of their own.
The bbsitter/friend has a lot going on generally unless I'm paying her.
I do have a membership at the YMCA - so I can use the child care there Yes, I'll have to do that more.

Since we started eating organic foods I practically have zero pms. The older we get the worse it is. I know that since we stopped buying processed food, meats full of hormones, antibiotics and pesticide free veggies and completely organic dairy we feel better. Teenage daughter and myself have lost about 20 pounds each without trying. Now when I eat non-organic foods I feel sick.

Besides those benefits my periods are shorter, generally no moody pms anger issues.

I also use whole psyllium husks for extra fiber daily.

On top of all of that my cholesterol is down without drugs.

This may sound silly, but for a while I was on Jenny Craig and a lot of their foods contain soy protein. I found that I was less crampy, grouchy, and irritable that one week a month when I was on that diet. Someone told me that soy has more estrogen in it than a birth control pill, and it made some sense. When the calendar says it's coming, I load up on edamame, tofu, soy milk, soy nuts.... any way I can pump a little soy into my bod and it takes the edge off without having to medicate....
Good Luck!

It sounds like you have PMDD. This is the same thing I have except I get really depressed around that time and sometimes very irritable. It is different than PMS because it is so bad. A psychiatrist ended up helping me with this diagnosis (OBGYN was useless). I take an antidepressent every day and I have anti anxiety medication to help with the really bad times. We have also experimented with birth control (the nuva ring has really helped) because it can help avoid the wild fluctuation of hormones that occurs during that time. Please don't get discouraged and keep seeking help. I can't tell you how long I suffered because the doctors brush it off. There is also a birth control pill called YAZ that is supposed to help with PMDD but it did not help me. Good luck!

Stop suffering! Go to your ob-gyn and ask for a prescription to help alleviate your menstrual cramps (I assume you have bad cramps). That is all you will need and then you should be fine! Keep on exercising - a lot - that will help, too! Good luck!

I am the same way, and I just finally got my period back after having two kids! It's been one hell of a few months, with daily crying thrown in there as well. I feel like a manic depressive freak.

Have you tried fish oil? It helps a lot of people. I find exercise helps me.

For PMS... I take "Hyland's Calms Forte- for adults." It helps me at that time of month.... for PMS and stress.... and irritability.
I too, get PMS like that.

Also, taking adequate calcium amounts.
Also, taking "Natural Calm -Raspberry Lemon Magnesium Powder."

Whole Foods has these or any other natural food store.
You can also go to Amazon, and read the reviews of both of these.
Amazon carries all of these products....

I have also heard: that "Happy Camper by Natural Balance" is good.
Amazon has this too, and you can read the reviews of it there.

all the best,
Susan

Please try a natural progesterone cream. I thought it sounded to good to be true, by just rubbing some cream on you but I really suggest that you give it a try. Emerita is a really good one. I have gotten mine from Amazon and from Sprouts and most health food stores carry it. Here is Amazon's site if you would like to check out the reviews and see how it works: http://www.amazon.com/Emerita-Pro-Gest-Natural-Progestero...
Wish you the best,

I Was that exact same way - actually I only had like 2 'good weeks' a month. It was a Roller coaster of emotions Every Single Month :-( Finally I went to my Gyno ( 2 1/2 years ago) and cried that I couldnt do it anymore, it was messing up my relationship, work, friendships... Everything!! I went on Sarafem: it is used for:
Treating premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Sarafem is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve mood.
I would take it the two weeks before my period! What a HUGE difference !!! My world is pretty much back to 'normal'.. whatever That is! LOL GL and PLEASE go ask for help - there is ways to resolve this Terrible issue!!!

MAGNESIUM. No need for prescriptions. Take magnesium, either magnesium malate or magnesium citrate. it can cause loose stool, just cut the dose back a little. Take a minimum of 500mg, 1000-1500 might be better.

Here's my deal--pretty much same as you. Talk to your OB about something to take a week or two before your period. It really does help. It helps me. There's no need to be like that--it's the worst feeling--almost like being "put of control" a bit, right? It's your age and the hormones. (Me too!)
Good luck!

Talk to your ob-gyn - are you on any form of hormonal birth control? I know that there was one I was on at one point that turned me into a psycho at that time every month and once I had switched to something else, I was fine. Maybe something in that department needs "tweaking". Maybe you could also talk to your regular doctor about this as well.

At 43, you could be pre-menopausal as well. Again, talk to your ob-gyn.

Wow, I was actually just about to ask this same question. Last night was the final straw for me. I was "feeling it" all day long. I was angry, edgy, basically loaded for bear. At about 10:30 I was making a batch of rice crispy treats and went to move them to a cookie sheet. Well, I misjudged where the cookie sheet was and half of them fell on the floor (and my foot). That was IT! I started yelling and throwing rice crispies covered in marshmallow goop all over the kitchen. After my fit I felt a little better but by this morning the mood was back and I haven't been able to shake it all day.

Sadly this is a monthly occurence. More so after my son was born than my daughters. I have read through some of your responses and plan to try some of the more naturalremedies and possibly the exercise. I am not real big on routine, but I am willing to try just about anything ;)

Hello, When I was younger, I too had that week where I was so on edge. I had to remind myself that it wasn't my husband or my children who were the problem, but my "time of the month". If I was having a moment, I had to go into the bathroom or my bedroom for a few minutes and collect my thoughts. That helped.
Good luck with your precious family.

Acupuncture saved me! I went originally for my asthma about 15 years ago but as a result it got rid of my PMS. I went once a month for about 5 years and now I just got once in a while when I need a boost. I haven't had any PMS symptoms in 15 years. Definitely worth it!

Good luck!

I hear you. I used to curl up in a fetal position and cry like a baby for about 36 hours the day before my period. If anyone cam near me, i bit their head off. Not sure if it was the pain or something else, just knew I had to be alone for about 3- 4 days. Not so great as a school teacher.
Then I did this: www.SoYouWantToCleanse.com and everything seemed to balance out. My body was being fed a plethora of vitamins, minerals and nutrients and things started to settle down. Then after about 8 months on the program I got my period and didn't even know it! Seriously! Practically no symptoms. I eat right throughout the month, i eat more of this http://yourfamilyrules.isagenix.com/us/en/isadelight.dhtml the week of my cycle and life goes on as normal. My guess is that my hormones were so out of whack that i needed a pure nutrition to get me balanced. That is what this was...oh and BTW...in the first 4 months i released 42 pounds nad have kept it off for over 5 years. Nice side effect!
