I have never been able to tolerate birth control well...but after 2 years of extrutiating migraines and being sick of antidepressants for PMDD, I decided to give it a try. I had severe heart palpitations on it, my heart felt weird and achy when I wasn't having them. Also I was more moody than usual, like I had mild PMS instead of PMDD...so that wasn't bad for me I guess. The other issue I had was that I couldn't sleep well on it. And I did feel sick to my stomach and have diarrhea, which is rare for me.
So after one cycle I decided to try the NuvaRing. My ob/gyn does not want me to get a period (she didn't on Yaz either). I've had MINIMAL side effects on the ring. It's great. She wants me to keep it in for 3 weeks, then instead of taking it out to get a period just switch it out for another one. I noticed side effects right away on Yaz but not on the ring. My ob/gyn said sometimes the Ring is better because all of the hormones are emitted down there instead of in your stomach from a pill. Oh--also they said the Progesterone base is lower in the Ring than in Yaz. So the estrogen is the same but with lower progesterone.
I'd say give Yaz a try because everyone is differnt. Were you warned not to take Potassium supplements with it? I have been taking them for years, I think that may be why I had the heart side effects with it. The progestin in it can raise your blood potassium levels if you take supplements or certain medications. It can increase your risk for heart attack. So be careful on that one.
If you don't like it, consider the Ring. We'll see what happens in 2 weeks when I'm supposed to get a period and I don't...I've never tried anything like it before.
Good luck!!
